EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable.

Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a collaboration between EBSCO and BiblioLabs to increase traffic and discoverability of ETD research. You can join the movement and add your theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to your institutional repository.

EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Your ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to your IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

An Electronic Thesis or Dissertation (ETD) is a requirement for graduation from Doctoral programs and available to graduates from Masters programs.

What is an ETD?

An electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) is a digital version of a thesis or dissertation that will be deposited in the JScholarship repository managed by the Sheridan Libraries and be available online to the public.

Universities and colleges in the United States and abroad have been moving toward this type of publication for the past decade. Johns Hopkins started its own ETD program beginning in the fall semester of 2013.

Who does this apply to?

  • Required for all PhD Students
  • Optional for Masters students with a required thesis; contact your graduate office for information
  • Other graduate degrees: Consult with your graduate office

How and when do I submit my ETD?

  • Submit after you have defended your thesis or dissertation and made all edits required by your committee
  • Follow the formatting requirements
  • Login with your JHED ID to the JHU ETD submission system , fill in the required metadata, and upload a PDF/A file of your thesis or dissertation
  • The required PDF/A file format is different from a standard PDF. Please see the formatting requirements for further instructions

Fee Payment

The ETD submission fee is $60 and may be paid by credit card or by funds transfer from your department. The fee is due at the time of submission; payment verification is required for approval.

Pay by Credit Card – $60

IMPORTANT: If the card you are using is not your own (e.g., spouse or parent’s card), proceed with the payment at the site, but then email your name, your JHED ID, and the name of the credit card owner to [email protected] so we can link your submission with the payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. If your department does not coordinate printing and binding, you might consider Thesis on Demand or PhD Bookbinding . You can upload your PDF, and they will print it, bind it, and ship it to you.

Yes. No individual file can be larger than 512 MB, and the total size of all files cannot exceed 4 GB. If your thesis or dissertation is larger than that, please email [email protected] .

Within two months following degree conferral, ETDs are published to  JScholarship , our institutional repository. There are separate sections in JScholarship for masters theses and doctoral dissertations . If you placed an embargo on your ETD, only the metadata (author, title, abstract, etc.) will be available until the embargo period is up.

Your ETD will be published to our institutional repository, JScholarship , within two months following degree conferral. An ETD is considered published when it is deposited in JScholarship, even if it is under embargo.

Once published, changes cannot be made to your ETD. Your ETD will be published within two months following degree conferral. You are responsible for ensuring your ETD has been thoroughly proofread before you submit to the library.

Students submitting Electronic Theses and Dissertations are responsible for determining any copyright or fair use questions. For assistance, please consult the Copyright LibGuide or contact the librarian listed on the guide.

By default, ETDs are published to JScholarship within two months after you graduate. If you wish to temporarily restrict public access to your ETD, during the ETD submission process you can embargo your document for up to four years. Please note that the title and abstract of your document will still be visible during your embargo. You may release your document from embargo early or extend it up to the four-year maximum by emailing [email protected] . Once your document is publicly accessible, however, we cannot make changes to embargoes.

EThOS: e-theses online service Open access EThOS: e-theses online service Open access

EThOS, provided by the British Library, is a free online service providing access to UK doctoral theses.

Access EThOS is an open access resource.

Content  EThOS, provided by the British Library, is a free online service providing access to UK doctoral theses. It does not cover MPhils or master's dissertations.

EThOS aims to provide a central listing of all doctoral theses awarded by UK higher education institutions, with the full text of as many theses as possible.

The database includes more than 600,000 records. Around 4,000 law theses are covered, dating from the 1920s to the present day.

Searching  EThOS has basic and advanced search facilities. Searches can be limited to theses available for immediate download.

Advanced search allows users to search by author, title, awarding body, year of award and other criteria. Boolean connectors (AND, OR, AND NOT) can be selected from a drop-down menu

Downloading  Many theses are available for download; it is necessary to create a free account to do this.

There is an option to request digitisation of a thesis if it is not yet available for download. Sometimes this is free, but sometimes there is a charge (see FAQs).

Help A Help menu and an FAQ page are available.

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Welcome to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' Electronic Theses & Dissertation site. These pages are dedicated to help you find all the information you might require in order to format and successfully submit your graduate thesis for examination and publication electronically. Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) are prepared as text-based PDF files. ETDs can contain non-text elements such as sound, video, and hypertext links. ETDs are available through Scholarship@Western, Western's digital library repository, and also released to the world-wide web with priority in many search engines, enabling scholars worldwide to locate, search, and download the University of Western Ontario's ETDs.

The most significant benefit is the dramatic increase (50-250%) in citation impact that results from electronic publishing. This leads to increased rewards from universities, in the form of promotion and increased salary, and from granting agencies.

Other benefits include:

  • publicity for research - authors of electronic theses become more widely known and their reputations are enhanced
  • easy worldwide access to your theses for colleagues and collaborators
  • easy worldwide access to theses for job and grant applications
  • a raised profile for research institutions
  • reduced costs at the point of graduation since there is no need to have multiple copies printed.

For an overview of the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation process at The University of Western Ontario, please refer to any area from our site dedicated to supporting ETD at Western:

Advantages of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

  • The availability of Wits theses and dissertations electronically will undoubtedly lead to increased visibility of the institution internationally.
  • The advantages and attraction of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) include the following:
  • By creating ETDs students can use more innovative approaches, as well as print on paper, including audio, video, hypertext, multimedia and hypermedia.
  • Access to graduate research information is enhanced by making it available to researchers on the Internet (ETDs are accessed ten to a hundred times more than the paper copy).
  • Collaboration between research programmes can be promoted at separate universities by making research work visible and accessible via a network archive.
  • The costs of submitting and handling theses and dissertations will be reduced.
  • The theses and dissertations will be available 24 hours a day and are never checked out of the library.

E-thesis  is a digital system for the submission, assessment and archiving of theses and dissertations. It also feeds theses into the University of Helsinki’s open publication repository (Helda).

In all other faculties, theses are also reviewed and evaluated in the E-thesis system except the Faculty of Science. In the Faculties of Educational Sciences, Medicine and Theology and Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolan, bachelor's theses are also evaluated in E-Thesis. Check the policies of your faculty regarding submission of a thesis, such as deadline dates. All theses submitted by deadline (no later than 11:59 p.m.) will be considered.

In the faculties where E-thesis system is used to evaluate theses the staff at the Student Services receive theses submitted to E-thesis, and forward them to the relevant examiners for assessment. Students are notified once their thesis has been assessed. The faculty council or a grading committee or the steering group of the relevant degree programme decides on the approval of master’s theses that have been assessed. Theses saved in the system are automatically sent for analysis to the Ouriginal system to identify possible plagiarism. The student will receive a message about this. The link to the Ouriginal report will be on the thesis evaluation form and only the examiners of the thesis will be able to view the report. In connection with the evaluation of the thesis, the report produced by Ouriginal is audited.

Please find out more about your faculty’s practices (e.g., dates) for the submission of theses and dissertations.

Approved theses and dissertations are saved in the E-thesis system and can be read on the Helsinki University Library’s thesis terminals. Abstracts are always public and available online in open repository.

After a thesis or dissertation has been approved, the student can permit its publication in the University of Helsinki’s open  publication repository . More information about submission (e.g. abstract form), evaluation and publishing can be found from E-thesis .

Cornell Theses and Dissertations

Permanent uri for this collection.

The theses and dissertations of graduate students at Cornell University have been deposited in Cornell's institutional repository (eCommons) since about 2004. This collection also includes a few earlier Cornell theses.

Students retain ownership of the copyright of their work. Students also have the option of imposing a temporary embargo on access to the full text of their theses for limited amount of time (see eCommons access policy ). If access to a thesis is restricted, the metadata record for the thesis is still visible, but the text "Access to Document Restricted" is displayed, and a field labeled "No Access Until," which indicates the date when the full text of the thesis will become accessible.

More information about finding Cornell theses and dissertations is available on this library guide , and the eCommons help page for finding content in specific collections , including theses and dissertations.

In general, older theses and dissertations from Cornell University are not currently available as digital files in eCommons. The Library is willing to digitize and make available older Cornell theses on a cost recovery basis. If you are interested in this service, please contact [email protected] .

Starting with the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) graduating class of 2002, the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library and YSM Office of Student Research have collaborated on the Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library (YMTDL) project, publishing the digitized full text of medical student theses on the web as a valuable byproduct of Yale student research efforts. The digital thesis deposit has been a graduation requirement since 2006. Starting in 2012, alumni of the Yale School of Medicine were invited to participate in the YMTDL project by granting scanning and hosting permission to the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, which digitized the Library’s print copy of their thesis or dissertation. A grant from the Arcadia Fund in 2017 provided the means for digitizing over 1,000 additional theses. Harvard University Theses, Dissertations, and Prize Papers

The Harvard University Archives ’ collection of theses, dissertations, and prize papers document the wide range of academic research undertaken by Harvard students over the course of the University’s history.

Beyond their value as pieces of original research, these collections document the history of American higher education, chronicling both the growth of Harvard as a major research institution as well as the development of numerous academic fields. They are also an important source of biographical information, offering insight into the academic careers of the authors.

Printed list of works awarded the Bowdoin prize in 1889-1890.

Spanning from the ‘theses and quaestiones’ of the 17th and 18th centuries to the current yearly output of student research, they include both the first Harvard Ph.D. dissertation (by William Byerly, Ph.D . 1873) and the dissertation of the first woman to earn a doctorate from Harvard ( Lorna Myrtle Hodgkinson , Ed.D. 1922).

Other highlights include:

  • The collection of Mathematical theses, 1782-1839
  • The 1895 Ph.D. dissertation of W.E.B. Du Bois, The suppression of the African slave trade in the United States, 1638-1871
  • Ph.D. dissertations of astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (Ph.D. 1925) and physicist John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (Ph.D. 1922)
  • Undergraduate honors theses of novelist John Updike (A.B. 1954), filmmaker Terrence Malick (A.B. 1966),  and U.S. poet laureate Tracy Smith (A.B. 1994)
  • Undergraduate prize papers and dissertations of philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson (A.B. 1821), George Santayana (Ph.D. 1889), and W.V. Quine (Ph.D. 1932)
  • Undergraduate honors theses of U.S. President John F. Kennedy (A.B. 1940) and Chief Justice John Roberts (A.B. 1976)

What does a prize-winning thesis look like?

If you're a Harvard undergraduate writing your own thesis, it can be helpful to review recent prize-winning theses. The Harvard University Archives has made available for digital lending all of the Thomas Hoopes Prize winners from the 2019-2021 academic years.

Dissertations and Theses in KU ScholarWorks

KU ScholarWorks (KUSW) is the institutional repository of the University of Kansas. It contains scholarly work produced by KU students staff, and faculty, as well as departmental research publications.

Theses and dissertations comprise about one-third of the items in ScholarWorks.  They reflect the rich variety and proud scholarly traditions of KU research. ScholarWorks makes these works available to a worldwide audience, increasing their visibility and impact.

If you have questions about theses and dissertations in KU ScholarWorks, please contact Marianne Reed, Digital Publishing& Repository Manager at [email protected] .

Your Dissertation or Thesis in ScholarWorks

New dissertations and theses:

It generally takes 12 weeks after graduation before a new thesis or dissertation is added to the Dissertations or Theses collections in ScholarWorks. A thesis or dissertation submitted through the ETD Administrator will be sent to ScholarWorks automatically after it is processed by ProQuest, so students do not have to submit their thesis or dissertation separately to ScholarWorks.

Dissertations and theses before 2008:

If you are a KU alumnus or the heir of a KU alumnus that wrote a thesis or dissertation at KU and would like to make that work available in ScholarWorks, staff at the KU Libraries are happy to digitize your work and add it to ScholarWorks.

KU dissertations and theses that are in our collections and no longer covered by copyright can be added to KU ScholarWorks on request.   Please contact Marianne Reed, Digital Publishing & Repository Manager at [email protected] for more information.

Historical Context

Materials in KU ScholarWorks reflect the attitudes of the people, period, or context in which they were created. Certain images, words, terms, or descriptions may be offensive, culturally insensitive, or considered inappropriate today. These items do not represent the views of the KU Libraries or the university.

Unless otherwise noted, all theses and dissertations in ScholarWorks are protected by copyright and copyrights are held by the author.

  • Open Access:  KU ScholarWorks strives to provide open and public access to all content in the repository.  For exceptions, see  Delayed Access (Embargoes) , below.
  • Permanent Links :  All items in KU ScholarWorks are assigned URLs that will never change and can be used whenever the work is cited.
  • Google and Google Scholar: The developers of DSpace --the software package behind KU ScholarWorks--have worked closely with Google to ensure that the works in those systems are easily found by Google and Google Scholar.
  • ORCIDs :  KU ScholarWorks supports the use of Open Researcher and Contributor IDs (ORCIDs). An ORCID gives each researcher a unique identifier that supports connections between the author and their work.  Researcher identifiers like ORCIDs are used by many systems in the research ecosystem, including many granting agencies, where ORCIDs are used by applicants to automatically populate lists of publications.

Gamma tomography of spent nuclear fuel for geological repository safeguards

by University of Helsinki

Nuclear waste to be scanned before final disposal

All spent nuclear fuel that will be deposited in the bedrock will be measured with a method and device that have been developed in a doctoral research thesis being defended on 4 June 2024 at the University of Helsinki. The final disposal operations are being prepared to start next year in Finland.

At Olkiluoto in Eurajoki, preparations are underway to start the disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the Finnish bedrock next year—as the first place in the world.

After use, nuclear fuel becomes strongly radiating and dangerous waste. It contains a large amount of uranium and plutonium, which are building blocks for nuclear weapons . All these materials must be intact when the fuel rods are stored in their final deposit. This is why they must be meticulously and dependably measured before depositing them.

"This way, we can be sure of what is being deposited in the bedrock, and that all nuclear materials will remain in peaceful use," says visiting researcher Riina Virta at the University of Helsinki.

All the important information must be gathered before the final disposal. The measurements must also be stored in a way that will be accessible and understandable to human beings for thousands, even hundreds and thousands of years.

For her doctoral thesis , Virta has studied measuring methods for nuclear waste at the University of Helsinki in cooperation with the Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP). Virta also works as an inspector in the nuclear materials safeguards section of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority.

Gamma camera sees inside assembly

In her thesis work, Virta developed a PGET device, i.e. an imaging method called passive gamma emission tomography, which measures the gamma radiation emitted by spent nuclear fuel. Nuclear fuel consists of rods, a few meters long and containing uranium, which are gathered into an assembly to act as a fuel element. The PGET instrument can produce an exact cross-section image of the fuel assembly.

The cross-section image allows us to check that the assembly still retains all the rods. The challenging thing with this method is that the fuel dampens the radiation very efficiently.

"In practice, the radiation from the middle of the assembly just barely reaches the detector, i.e. the 'camera.' We wanted to fix this problem in our research," notes Virta.

The image quality was improved e.g. by developing the collection of data and using that data more wisely. The method was also developed so that the instrument can be used, not just in water, but in air, as well. This makes it adaptable to the Finnish plants taking care of the final disposal. The research also developed software tools to make the operative application of the method easier.

The performance of the method was proven with the help of an extensive library of field measurements carried out in Finnish nuclear power plants.

"This means the method has been studied in detail and found to work well, and now we are just waiting for the operations of final disposal to start in Olkiluoto," says Virta.

Drugs can reduce recurrence after bowel cancer surgery, new thesis suggests

by Claes Björnberg, Umea University

surgery

A thesis at Umeå University shows that certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDs, can help patients who have undergone surgery for colorectal cancer. These patients suffer fewer recurrences of cancer and fewer leaks at the surgical site, so-called anastomotic leakage.

The researchers investigated whether NSAIDs, if taken in the first week after surgery for rectal cancer, could reduce the risk of recurrence-free survival. No conclusive effect were seen. This may be because there is no effect, that there were too few patients in the study, that different NSAIDs were used, or that a longer treatment with NSAIDs may be needed to see an effect.

"When we included a larger group of patients in the study, we saw positive effects in those treated with NSAIDs. These patients had a reduced rate of cancer recurrence, especially for left-sided colon cancer, and a reduced rate of anastomotic leakage," says the study's author Oskar Grahn, Department of Diagnostics and Intervention.

Furthermore, the biological processes that can explain why anastomotic leakage negatively affect long-term cancer outcomes were investigated. They discovered that even though patients who suffered anastomotic leakage or intra-abdominal abscess had normal levels of a protein called C-reactive protein (CRP) 41 days after surgery, there were 72 proteins that were upregulated and five that were downregulated still. This suggests that there may still be harmful processes going on in the body, even though one might think that the negative effects already have passed.

Finally, it was studied how common a certain mutation of the gene for the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX-2) is among patients with colorectal cancer in Sweden. COX-2 is one of the enzymes that NSAIDs inhibit. However, it was not possible to confirm a previous finding showing that this mutation could be linked to an increased risk of anastomotic leakage.

In conclusion, research suggests that NSAIDs may have beneficial effects on cancer recurrence and anastomotic leakage in patients with colorectal cancer , depending on the location of the tumor and the anastomosis. This is especially the case for left-sided colon cancer, as these tumors often overexpress COX-2.

"Further research is needed to confirm these results and to investigate whether a longer treatment with NSAIDs could have an even greater effect," says Oskar Grahn.
