- 33. Safety of Re-cycled Plastics for Food Packaging Three main approaches are envisaged for producing food packaging materials from post-consumer collected plastic packaging materials • Proper washing • Purification of monomers formed by depolymerisation and then repolymerized into pure materials as those made from conventional monomers. • Lamination of recycled plastics. The layer in contact with food should be made of a virgin polymer. (Franz et al., 1994). It is called as functional barrier.
- 34. Functional Barrier The functional barrier is any integral layer which under normal conditions of use reduces all possible material transfers to foodstuffs to a quantity which should not endanger human health or cause deterioration of the organoleptic characteristics. - 37. Results of the study There was hardly any difference between grade A polythene film and virgin film in all the properties Recycled film made from milk pouches and waste recycled films (grade B) had shown significant change in physico-chemical properties and migration tests which were not acceptable for packaging application. To keep migration in acceptable limits a low storage temperature should be applied in combination with a suitable barrier layer for indirect contact. Contd.........
- 40. Plastic recycling in India • Municipal solid waste in India contain 1-4 per cent by weight of plastic waste. • India’s rate of recycling of plastic waste is the highest (60%) in the world as compared to other countries (China 10%, Europe 7%, Japan 12%, South Africa 16%, USA 10%). • Plastic waste is recycled in India in an “unorganized” way. - 42. Plastics in India (2nd September 1999)- Salient features • Ban on the use of carry bags and containers of recycled plastics by vendors for storing, carrying and packaging foodstuffs . • Carry bags and containers used for packaging of foodstuff be made of virgin plastics and of natural shade or white i.e. no colourants used • Carry bags and Containers made from recycled plastics for use of purposes other than foodstuffs packing be manufactured using pigments and colourants as per IS:- 9833 / 1981 • Minimum thickness of carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastics be not less than 20 microns
- 43. Salient features of the amendments in 2003 No person shall manufacture, distribute or sell carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastics below 8 x 12 inches {20 x 30 cms} in size No vendor shall use carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastic below the recommended size No vendor shall use carry bags and containers made of recycled plastics for storing, carrying, dis- pensing or packaging of foodstuffs
- 44. Continued…. • . Every manufacturer shall apply in the particular form to the State Pollution Control Board/Pollution Control Committee for the grant of Registration and renewal of Registration The State Pollution Control Board/Pollution Control Committee shall issue and renew the Registration after ascertaining that the unit meets the norms prescribed under these rules
- 45. State specific initiatives Few states in India have also instituted state laws to minimize plastic waste. Himachal Pradesh was the first to formulate a state rule to protect the state from plastic waste menace which is followed by Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra etc.
- 46. Ecological case for recycling o If recycled plastics are used to produce goods this will directly reduce oil usage and emissions of greenhouse gases. o Greater positive environmental benefits for recycling over landfill and incineration with energy recovery o Energy recovery from waste plastics (transformation to fuel) can be used to reduce landfill volumes
- 47. Current advances in recycling • Reliable detectors and sophisticated recognition and decision softwares collectively increase the accuracy and productivity of automatic sorting. • Higher value applications for recycled polymers in closed- loop processes, which can directly replace virgin polymer • Recycling of the non-bottle packaging has become possible because of improvements in sorting and washing technologies and emerging markets for the recyclates
- 48. Public support for recycling • There is significant people who value environmental values in their purchasing patterns. • Wide participation among the general population in recycling schemes has been noted. • Some governments use policy to encourage post consumer recycling
- 49. Economic issues relating to recycling • Two key economic drivers influence the viability of recycling. These are the price of the recycled polymer compared with virgin polymer and the cost of recycling compared with alternative forms of acceptable disposal. • Lack of information about the availability of recycled plastics, its quality and suitability for specific applications, can also act as a disincentive to use recycled material. • Collection of used plastics from households i.e. Kerbside scheme is more economical in suburbs • In rural areas ‘bring schemes’ are considered more cost- effective than kerbside collection
- 50. Conclusion • In summary, recycling is one strategy for end-of-life waste management of packaging materials. • It is more economical as well as environmentally better as compared to other waste reducing systems such as incineration, landfill, decomposition, etc.

A surprising solution for reducing our food waste
Every year, we waste 1.3 billion tonnes of food. Here's how that could change. Image: Pexels/Kelly

Stay up to date:, food insecurity.
- Every year, 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally, the equivalent of one-third of all food produced for human consumption.
- Busy lives and cooking habits lead to neglecting fresh produce until it spoils, adding to the problem.
- New research finds that keeping a 'food log' for 6 weeks can reduce the amount of waste by an average of 108g per week, an effect that can still be seen six months later.
You’ve had a long day and you’re tired. Faced with making dinner, you look in the fridge and decide to cook something that requires little effort. This is a common scenario, and one that many people act out without really thinking about it.
The fact that there is often little or no conscious thought involved in routine daily food preparation means that ingredients that must be used before they expire are often left to go off.
Two billion people in the world currently suffer from malnutrition and according to some estimates, we need 60% more food to feed the global population by 2050. Yet the agricultural sector is ill-equipped to meet this demand: 700 million of its workers currently live in poverty, and it is already responsible for 70% of the world’s water consumption and 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
New technologies could help our food systems become more sustainable and efficient, but unfortunately the agricultural sector has fallen behind other sectors in terms of technology adoption.
Launched in 2018, the Forum’s Innovation with a Purpose Platform is a large-scale partnership that facilitates the adoption of new technologies and other innovations to transform the way we produce, distribute and consume our food.
With research, increasing investments in new agriculture technologies and the integration of local and regional initiatives aimed at enhancing food security, the platform is working with over 50 partner institutions and 1,000 leaders around the world to leverage emerging technologies to make our food systems more sustainable, inclusive and efficient.

In research that colleagues and I recently published , we found that overcoming this habitual behaviour is key to cutting food waste. Here’s how to do it.
Every year, 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally. This is the equivalent of one-third of all the food produced for human consumption.
In the UK alone, households wasted 6.4 million tonnes of food between 2021 and 2022. Accounting for the fossil energy used to grow and harvest that food, as well as the greenhouse gases released when it rots in fields or landfills, this waste equates to 18 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Food waste harms the environment, but reducing how much food is produced only to be thrown away can curb hunger . It could also save the world more than US$120 billion yearly (£96 billion) – and around £700 a year per household.
We measured fruit and vegetable waste from 154 households across the UK for an initial six-week period. Fruit and vegetables are among the most commonly wasted types of food. This may be because supermarkets often sell these ingredients in bulk or because people buying them sometimes fancy something less healthy and more convenient to prepare when the time comes to cook.
During those six weeks, half of the participants were asked to log what fresh fruit and vegetables they bought and when their purchases had to be used according to the label on the packaging, as well as guidelines provided by the researchers.
In each of these homes, the log was placed on the fridge as a daily reminder of what needed to be used each day to avoid waste. Participants also received daily text messages reminding them to check their food log and add any newly bought fruit and vegetables.
The other half of the households involved in this experiment simply measured their food waste at the end of each week without any reminders to use the fresh produce they had.
We expected the half of households receiving reminders to cut their waste more effectively – in fact, there was only a small difference between the two groups. But we did find that simply measuring fresh produce waste made all households more likely to think about what they were wasting.
This was evident from a range of responses from the participants. Taking part in the study also made participants feel as if they could control the amount of food they were throwing away.
It seems that simply asking people to measure their food waste each week for six weeks kickstarts a thinking process that guides people’s behaviour in future.
Food waste on the brain
Our findings may seem obvious, but there is more to them.
We found that across all households the reduction of fresh produce waste averaged 108 grams a week. This was sustained for six months after the experiment ended.
The experience of measuring food waste weekly during the experiment seemed to instil a mindfulness about food waste that meant participants were still throwing less away half a year on. It is interesting that only a short period of conscious effort is necessary to encourage lasting changes in behaviour.
Research into the psychology of food waste tends to focus on nudges, which are subliminal actions to change behaviour, such as menus designed to highlight plant-based options. It is not clear whether such methods, which bypass the conscious mind, work in the long term .
Our study suggests that it takes thought to alter habits. But the good news is that we found people only had to think about reducing food waste for a short time to form an enduring habit of reducing the amount of food they throw away.
Have you read?
7 innovative solutions for fighting food waste, food waste makes up ‘half’ of global food system emissions, could dehydrating meat and vegetables help solve the global food waste problem.
Most people have busy lives and simply don’t have the mental capacity to spare each day. Strategies for reducing food waste that require only a short-term commitment of mental effort are likely to be most effective.
And even a small reduction in household food waste can make a difference. Our study showed that it is relatively easy for people to cut how much fruit and vegetables they discard each week. If just 1,000 people could do the same, it would save over 9.5 tonne of CO₂ a year, the equivalent of 1,140,000 smartphone charges.
Thinking about food waste for six weeks is a small price to pay if the result is a significant and long-term difference to our planet’s wellbeing.

Waste Pro and Adams Sanitation competing to provide curbside recycling in Pensacola
Pensacola is on track to select a curbside recycling pickup service by this summer. The two providers being considered are Waste Pro and Adams Sanitation.
The city is in the middle of evaluating bids from the two companies to provide a paid curbside recycling service for city residents.
Last year, the city ended its curbside recycling program after the program became too expensive because of high contamination rates and a collapse in the commodities market led to i ncreased fees charged by the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority.
A majority of residents said they'd be willing to pay for a curbside recycling servic e in the city's annual resident satisfaction survey. Earlier this year, the city issued an request for proposals for a third-party recycling provider.
A selection committee vetting the proposals held an initial meeting on April 30 to review the two responses to the request.
Despite the public meeting, the city has declined to release the full details of the proposals, citing its procurement rules.
The five-member selection committee discussed the two proposals and ranked Waste Pro as No. 1 and Adams Sanitation as No. 2 based on a combined total of scores from each committee member. The ranking is only the first step in the process. The two firms will give oral presentations to the committee on May 22, at which point the city said the full details of the two proposals will become public. The committee will make a recommendation to the mayor for which firm should be selected.
Previously: The people of Pensacola have spoken. They want recycling, and they're willing to pay for it
The details that came out during the discussion indicate that Adams Sanitation's proposal gave prices of what customers would pay with a city subsidy and without a city subsidy. Adams would also conduct a $10,000 marketing campaign to tell city residents about the new service.
Waste Pro's quoted price was "quite a bit higher" than Adams Sanitation's price, selection committee member and Deputy City Administrator Amy Miller noted during the April 30 meeting.
Waste Pro's proposal also said they would offer a concierge service where residents would not have to bring their cans all the way to the street. Waste Pro's proposal also said they would work with the city to "get the word out" about the new service, according to Miller's comments, but did not provide a dollar amount for marketing.
This isn't the first time Adams Sanitation and Waste Pro have gone head-to-head for a local contract. One competition between the two companies became a bitter legal battle in Santa Rose County in 2022.
Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said this week they will continue to move the selection process forward.
"We continue to move forward with getting some new and improved version of curbside recycling back to the citizens, or at least that option to do so," Reeves said.
