How do I cite an online video?

Note: This post relates to content in the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook . For up-to-date guidance, see the ninth edition of the MLA Handbook .

Begin the entry as you would any other: consult the MLA format template . List the title of the video in the “Title of source” slot and the title of the website where you watched the video in the “Title of container” slot.

Rubier, Jeremy, director. Gui Martinez: A Short Film and Photo Essay . Vimeo , uploaded by Poweredby.tokyo, May 2017, vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks/216976160.

Keep in mind that some information may not be available, and other information may be included. In the example below, the video has no author, director, or producer, so work with what you have:

Slip Slip Knit (SSK) . YouTube , uploaded by TheKnitWitch, 14 Feb. 2007, www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGwcYW3GG3M.

If it’s not clear that the work you’re citing is a video—for example, if a song by the same title appears on the site—include the medium of publication in the optional-element slot at the end of the entry:

Beyoncé. “Pretty Hurts.”  Beyoncé , www.beyonce.com/video/. Video.

The same format can be used for other sites that host user-generated videos, such as Vimeo.

Cite a livestream (e.g., YouTube live) that is not archived by its hosting platform and cannot be retrieved by any other means (i.e., recorded and made available online via another hosting site) as a personal communication .

Harvard University. (2019, August 28). Soft robotic gripper for jellyfish [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guRoWTYfxMs

  • Parenthetical citations : (Asian Boss, 2020; Harvard University, 2019)
  • Narrative citations : Asian Boss (2020) and Harvard University (2019)
  • Use the name of the account that uploaded the video as the author.
  • If the account did not actually create the work, explain this in the text if it is important for readers to know. However, if that would mean citing a source that appears unauthoritative, you might also look for the author’s YouTube channel, official website, or other social media to see whether the same video is available elsewhere.
  • To cite the words of individuals featured in a video, name or describe the individual(s) in your sentence in the text and then provide a parenthetical citation for the video. For example, the Asian Boss video is an interview with the director general of the International Vaccine Institute; you should provide details about who spoke and what they said in the text of the sentence and then cite the video using the parenthetical citation shown.
  • Provide the specific date on which the video was uploaded.
  • Italicize the title of the video.
  • Include the description “[Video]” in square brackets after the title.
  • Provide the site name (YouTube) and URL of the video.

2. YouTube channel

  • Parenthetical citations : (APA Publishing Training, n.d.; Walker, n.d.)
  • Narrative citations : APA Publishing Training (n.d.) and Walker (n.d.)
  • YouTube channel pages begin on the “Home” tab by default. If you want to cite one of the other tabs (e.g., “Videos,” “Playlists”), use the name of that tab rather than “Home” in the title element of the reference (as in the Walker example).
  • Italicize the title of the channel.
  • Include the description “[YouTube channel]” in square brackets after the title.
  • Provide a retrieval date because the content is designed to change over time and is not archived.

YouTube video references are covered in the seventh edition APA Style manuals in the Publication Manual Section 10.12 and the Concise Guide Section 10.10

Website Book Journal Video

While you might first think of books, newspapers, and journal articles as go-to sources for academic assignments, YouTube provides a wealth of informative, easily accessible videos. Yes, there is questionable content, but the site is also filled with educational channels, snippets from evening news programs, and even full-length documentaries on a range of interesting and scholarly subjects.

Since YouTube has a ton of information, citing a video retrieved from YouTube might seem more difficult than citing a book. But the process is fairly simple—and we’ve put together this helpful guide on how to cite a YouTube video using MLA format , APA format, and Chicago style.

If you’ve previously cited a video from another website, you’re in luck: The process for citing a video from YouTube is basically the same. To provide an example, we’ve cited a video from the CrashCourse YouTube channel—run by “Fault in Our Stars” author John Green—that offers educational videos on a slew of topics, including history, chemistry, and psychology. This particular video is about the US Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism. We’ve laid out how to cite the video in MLA format, APA format, and Chicago style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO7FQsCcbD8

To properly cite a video from YouTube, you must consider the following pieces of information:

  • Full name, username, or name of the company that posted the content
  • Title of the video
  • Title of the website (YouTube)
  • Publisher of the video
  • Date the video was posted
  • Length or duration of the video
  • URL or of the video

Use the following structure to cite a YouTube video in MLA 9:

Last name, First name (of the individual who posted the content) OR the name of the company OR the username. “Title of the Video.” Title of the Website , Name of the Publisher that uploaded the video (only include if it differs from the author or title), Date it was uploaded, URL.

Here’s how the above example would be cited in MLA 9 :

CrashCourse. “The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8.” YouTube , 21 Mar. 2013, youtu.be/bO7FQsCcbD8.

If you need help with in-text and parenthetical citations, CitationMachine.net can help. Our MLA citation generator is simple and easy to use!

Use the following structure to create an APA citation for a YouTube video :

Name of the Account OR Last Name, First initial of uploader [YouTube Account Name]. (Year, Month Day it was posted). Title of the video [Video]. YouTube. URL

Here’s how the above example would be cited in APA:

CrashCourse. (2013, March 21). The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash course in US History #8 [Video]. YouTube. https://youtu.be/bO7FQsCcbD8

Use the following structure to cite a YouTube video in Chicago :

Last name, First name of the individual or the company who posted the content. “Title of Video.” YouTube video, length. Date published. URL.

Here’s how the above example would be cited in Chicago :

CrashCourse. “The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course in US History #8.” YouTube video, 13:03. March 21, 2013. https://youtu.be/bO7FQsCcbD8

Including the name(s) of the video poster is discussed in reference examples 88 and 90 of the APA Publication Manual , 7 th edition. If the video is posted on the organization’s official website, then the speaker or presenter’s name would be listed in the author field. However, if the video is posted on YouTube or any other video sharing site, the name of the account that uploaded the video is listed as the author instead, to aid retrieval.

APA reference list template and examples:

Presenter’s Last Name, F. M. or Uploader’s Last Name, F. M. [Username*]. (Date posted). Title of the video [Video]. Publisher. URL

Cutts, S. (2016, October 18). Are you lost in the world like me? [Video]. Vimeo. https://vimeo.com/209248444

Fogarty, M. [Grammar Girl]. (2016, September 30). How to diagram a sentence (absolute basics) [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zznr-e6A4mQ

Iimjobs. (2020, March 2). Chegg – Life at Chegg | Showcase | iimjobs.com [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Nb3Ebtj9M

*Note: The username should be included if the account holder’s name and account name are both known and if including the username will help in retrieval.

Per the MLA Handbook , 9 th ed., the performer or creator is omitted if they are not mentioned in the source. Instead, the name of the uploader is included in the contributor field.

MLA works cited list template and example:

“Video Name.” Name of the Website , uploaded by Account Name, date video was posted, URL.

“Top 10 Unforgettable Buffy The Vampire Slayer Moments.” YouTube , uploaded by MsMojo, 1 Oct. 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKq4SjCPzII.

As per the APA Publication Manual , 7 th edition, the in-text citation for a direct quote from a YouTube video should include the last name of the person who uploaded the video, the year the video was published, and a timestamp of the quote you are citing.

Film or Video

Streaming Video From a Website (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)

Streaming video from a subscription media website (netflix, amazon prime, hulu, etc.), streaming video from a library database, television series episode.

Note: All citations should be double spaced and have a hanging indent in a Reference List.

A "hanging indent" means that each subsequent line after the first line of your citation should be indented by 0.5 inches.

This Microsoft support page contains instructions about how to format a hanging indent in a paper.

Who to Credit - Film or Video

The director should be credited as the author of a film. If the director is unknown, someone in a similar role, such as a producer and/or writer, can be credited. To clarify what role the person has in the production, their job title such as Director is put after their name in round brackets if the job title is known.

Who to Credit - Streaming Video from a Website

For videos from websites such as YouTube or Vimeo, credit the person who posted the content. If a real name is provided, use that followed by the person's user name in square brackets. If the real name of the person who posted the content is not known, just use their user name without brackets.

Note : It is not necessary to specify how you watched a film or video (e.g. motion picture, DVD, streaming online).

In the Body of a Paper

Books, Journals, Reports, Webpages, etc.: When you refer to titles of a “stand-alone work,” as the APA calls them on their APA Style website, such as books, journals, reports, and webpages, you should italicize them. Capitalize words as you would for an article title in a reference, e.g., In the book Crying in H Mart: A memoir , author Michelle Zauner (2021) describes her biracial origin and its impact on her identity.

Article or Chapter: When you refer to the title of a part of a work, such as an article or a chapter, put quotation marks around the title and capitalize it as you would for a journal title in a reference, e.g., In the chapter “Where’s the Wine,” Zauner (2021) describes how she decided to become a musician.

How to cite a YouTube video in MLA

MLA YouTube video citation

To cite a YouTube video in a reference entry in MLA style 9th edition include the following elements:

  • Author(s) or screen name: Give the last name and name as presented in the source (e. g. Watson, John). For two authors, reverse only the first name, followed by ‘and’ and the second name in normal order (e. g. Watson, John, and John Watson). For three or more authors, list the first name followed by et al. (e. g. Watson, John, et al.)
  • Video title: Titles are italicized when independent. If part of a larger source add quotation marks and do not italize.
  • Date of publication: Give the day, month and year of publication. All months, excluding June and July, are abbreviated as three letters (e.g. 9 Aug. 2019.)
  • URL: Copy URL in full from your browser, include http:// or https:// and do not list URLs created by shortening services.

Here is the basic format for a reference list entry of a YouTube video in MLA style 9th edition:

Author(s) or screen name . " Video title ." YouTube, Date of publication , URL .

Take a look at our works cited examples that demonstrate the MLA style guidelines in action:

A YouTube video where the creator's real name is not provided

AsapSCIENCE . " How to learn faster ." YouTube , 28 Sep. 2017 , youtube.com/watch?v=B9SptdjpJBQ .

Note: The creator's real name is not available, the user name is used instead.

A YouTube video where the creator's real name is available

Bialik, Mayim . " The Life Changing Magic of Detective Pikachu ." YouTube , 13 June 2019 , youtube.com/watch?v=97KJhK-9yvc .

A YouTube video uploaded by a user

" Modern Family Funny Moments ." YouTube , uploaded by MIke Arasa , 26 Jan. 2019 , youtube.com/watch?v=b9LsHST4E78 .

Note: Video uploaded by a user, not by the creator of the video.

How to Cite a YouTube Video in Harvard Referencing

  • 3-minute read
  • 6th October 2019

YouTube isn’t just for makeup tutorials and travel vlogs. Sometimes, you may come across something you want to cite in an essay . In this post, then, we’re looking at how to cite a YouTube video in  Harvard referencing , including both in-text citations and the entry in the reference list.

Citing a YouTube Video in Harvard Referencing

Generally, YouTube videos are not the most academic sources, so you may be better off looking for a book or journal article that covers similar information. However, if you’re confident that the video is suitably rigorous to use in your writing, you’ll need to cite it like any other source.

The process for this is a little different for a YouTube video, since you do not need an author’s surname in the citation. Instead, you should cite the title and the year it was uploaded. For example:

The presence of the word “male” in “female” is actually a coincidence ( Words That Seem Related, But Aren’t , 2016).

Here, for instance, the title of the video is Words That Seem Related, But Aren’t . Between this and the year of publication, the reader will be able to find the full source information in the reference list.

Furthermore, if you need to quote a YouTube video directly, you won’t be able to cite any page numbers. But you can provide a timestamp for the part of the video you’re quoting, such as in the following:

According to Arika Okrent in  Words That Seem Related, But Aren’t  (2016, 00:00:20), “The eventual overlap in pronunciation was accidental.”

This shows that the quote is taken from twenty seconds into the video. The reader would then be able to look up the video and skip to the cited section.

Online Videos in a Harvard Reference List

Any YouTube video cited in your work should be added to the reference list at the end of the document. The format for a YouTube video here is:

Title of Video  (date uploaded) YouTube video, added by Username of uploader [Online]. Available at URL [Accessed date].

For the video cited above, then, the full reference would be:

Words That Seem Related, But Aren’t  (2016) YouTube video, added by Arika Okrent [Online]. Available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f_3PNlkaKs [Accessed 8 November 2016].

The key is providing enough information for readers to find the video.

A Quick Note on Harvard Referencing

“Harvard referencing” is actually a generic term for parenthetical author–date referencing . As such, different universities often have in-house versions of Harvard referencing. And while different versions of this referencing style have much in common, they can also vary in some respects.

As a result, you should always check your style guide for advice if you’ve been asked to use Harvard referencing in a document. And if you need any help checking that your referencing is clear and consistent, don’t forget to submit your documents to our academic proofreading service .

How to cite a YouTube video

Image of daniel-elias

In this guide we’re going to show you the easiest way to cite a YouTube video. YouTube is full of educational material, and as more citable sources move online it’s no longer strange to use YouTube as a resource for your assignments and papers. Here’s how to cite a YouTube video in some of the most popular citation styles: APA , MLA , and Harvard .

 How to cite a YouTube video automatically

The easiest way to create a YouTube citation is to use our citation generator below. Simply paste in the video URL into the search box and we’ll magically find all the details and put them in the right order for your citation. Then just copy and paste it into your paper.

 How to cite a YouTube video manually

If you want to learn how to write the citation by hand then use the templates below corresponding to the citation style you need:

 In APA style

First, locate the following details for the video: author or creator of the video, video title, the date it was uploaded, and the full link to the video .

  • The author or creator can be found underneath the video itself on the YouTube page.
  • The video title can also be found directly under the video.
  • The upload date can be found under the video too.
  • The URL can be copied out of the browser address bar. If you’re using the YouTube app then you can usually find this by sharing the video and selecting the ‘link’ option.

Once you have those details, put them in this order with the following punctuation:

Author last name , Author first name initial . ( Uploaded year , Uploaded month and day ). Video title YouTube . Retrieved from Video URL

Your citation should look like this:

Techquickie. (2018, August 10). How Does Spotify Work? YouTube . Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9sbMVkdCcY

In a lot of cases (like the above example) the author will be a business or just a username, not a real name. In these cases simply list the full username in place of the author last name and first name initial.

 In MLA 8 style

You need the following details for MLA 8 style: author or creator of the video, video title, the date it was uploaded, the full link to the video, and the access date (the date you watched the video) .

  • The access date is the date you viewed the video (usually today)

Then use this template:

Author last name , Author first name . “ Video title ” , Upload date , Video URL . Accessed Access date .

The final formatted citation should look like this:

Techquickie. “How Does Spotify Work?” YouTube , 10 Aug. 2018, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9sbMVkdCcY. Accessed 18 Aug. 2018.

In a lot of cases (like the above example) the author will be a business or just a username, not a real name. In these cases simply list the full username in place of the author last name and first name.

 In Harvard style

Harvard format is very similar to APA. First, locate these details for the video: author or creator of the video, video title, the date it was uploaded, the full link to the video, and the access date (date you viewed the video) .

Author last name , Author first name initial . ( Upload date year ) “ Video title ,” YouTube . Available at: Video URL (Accessed: Date accessed ).

Techquickie (2018) “How Does Spotify Work?,” YouTube . Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9sbMVkdCcY (Accessed: August 18, 2018).

  • The Video Essay Process

This section will give an introductory overview of the stages required to create a video essay.  Video essayers advice is to start simple and work through each stage of the video production process. Visit the Resources page of this guide for more.

Identify what is your argument? What is it that you want to communicate to the viewer? Write this down in a few sentences, refer and modify it as required.

Watch Video Essays

Watch a selection of video essays, read blogs and web pages from video essayers and decide what type of video essay you would like to create. Start simple.

A storyboard is a detailed outline (similar to an outline in a written essay) that helps you to organise and visualise the video essay as to what is on the screen, text, media, message and transitions between shots.

Storyboards assist in determining the length, message and meaning of the video essay and help save time with editing and post production processes.

  • Free Storyboard Templates

Collect & Edit

Collect video material as downloads, ripping DVDs, screen grabs, mobile phone footage and create voice-overs. Use research skills to find information and statements to support your argument. Maintain a standard of quality and manage your videos by naming conventions and storage.

Use editing software and experiment with available functionality to enhance and support your argument. Add a voice-over, sound effects, music and other aspects of multimodality. Be sure to include references and credits to all sources used in creating the video essay.

Revisit elements of your video essay and modify as required.

Visit the Resources page of this guide for more.

It is imperative that you reference all sources used (including videos, stills, music, sfx) and apply the correct formatting so that references cited can be easily traced. The referencing style used at ECU is the APA style, 6th ed. 2010. Refer to the ECU Referencing Library Guide for accurate citation in APA style.

The 1 Star Trek Trope That The Orville Has Never Made Fun Of

There’s 1 thing top gun 3 won’t be able to bring back from maverick, dr. robotnik's 10 best quotes in the sonic the hedgehog movies.

Sabrina Carpenter's music video for her song "Taste" references famous movies, especially a Meryl Streep cult classic from 1992. Carpenter's video also stars Jenna Ortega , an actor closely associated with modern horror. Both Ortega and Carpenter's TV and film careers began on shows on the Disney Channel, and now, they've collaborated past their days with the House of Mouse. The "Taste" music video premiered in late August 2023 and has 53 million views on YouTube, at the time of writing.

In "Taste," Carpenter taunts Ortega's character, telling her that the man she is currently dating was her lover once too. The themes of the song revolve around shared lovers, sexual histories, and marking someone's territory in a relationship. Carpenter's video references many movies , honoring classic camp and horror films. However, there is one 1992 Meryl Streep film that the "Taste" video draws clear inspiration from .

The Taste Music Video References Robert Zemeckis' Death Becomes Her

The film starred meryl streep, goldie hawn, and bruce willis.

Robert Zemeckis' 1992 film Death Becomes Her stars Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as two immortal women trying to kill each other . Much like the girls in the music video, Streep's Madeline and Hawn's Helen are fighting over a shared lover, played by Bruce Willis. Their issues stem from a complicated past, though by the end of the film, they have bonded over their trauma, sharing jokes about their former love interest, who has passed away.

Other thematic and smaller details are homages to the film. Both Carpenter and Streep have iconic blonde hairstyles. The setting of Madeline and Helen's fight, a large foyer in a mansion, is similar to the part of the house where Carpenter and Ortega wrestle. They both include comical and over-the-top stunts with memorable body violence. Also, in the clearest reference to Death Becomes Her , both Carpenter and Hawn get large holes in their torso from the battle , becoming an iconic image from both projects.

The Music Video Nods To Other Films As Well

There are lots of movie references in the music video.

While Death Becomes Her is the reference for much of the video, there are many other film references in the "Taste" music video . Among these is a reference to the film Ginger Snaps , which also features impalement on a yard fence. Kill Bill is also honored, as Ortega wears Elle Driver 's iconic nurse outfit. In this hospital part of the video, Ortega holds defibrillator paddles to Carpenter's head, which is a means of murder in Scream 4 . Most recognizably, Carpenter rips open a shower curtain with a knife, stabbing at Ortega and her lover, in a direct reference to Psycho .

Death Becomes Her is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Within the three-minute music video, Carpenter is able to jam in many movie references, making the video a detailed and extensive project. Carpenter and Ortega also cemented their professional relationship , even hinting at sapphic undertones. Sabrina Carpenter 's "Taste" music video is a thoughtful homage to horror comedies, especially Meryl Streep's 1992 cult classic Death Becomes Her .
