While most people consider the holidays “the most wonderful time of the year,” for some students, not so much. With families to care for, holiday parties to prepare for and gift shopping to finish in between, finding time to complete schoolwork may seem down right impossible. For students, the mounting stress of the holidays can result in late assignments, or, even worse, assignments never submitted at all.

But it’s important to remember that late assignments and missed assignments will have a negative effect on your grade.  A failing or incomplete grade  can affect your graduation plans. And that’s not very merry at all. So instead of waiting until the last minute and panicking the night before a deadline, here are seven strategies you can use to ensure your homework gets done on time and gift yourself a much needed break.

1. Plan Ahead

It’s easy to lose track of deadlines when the days are filled with holiday fun, and that doesn’t leave much time, or thought, for course work. Even with so many (welcome) distractions, it’s important to complete schoolwork on time. To better pace yourself, create a schedule for what assignments are due and when, and break up that work into smaller chunks. Keep this schedule in an easy-to-see place so you can avoid any last minute surprises.  

2. Save the Easy Assignments for Later

When you first sit down for a school session, you may feel inclined to get the easy material out of the way. However, your energy and focus are at their peak when you first start. Use this brainpower advantage to get through the most challenging subjects early on. Then, should you really experience holiday and homework crunch time, you’ll be able to complete the smaller assignments with less stress and in less time.

3. Enlist the Elves

You have your your own helpers who are ready and willing to lend a hand: your spouse, kids, siblings, parents, in-laws, grandparents, the list goes on. Instead of feeling obligated to handle all the holiday hoopla alone, get your helpers involved. Let a family member supervise the cooking or make a gift pit stop for you so you can get away for half an hour or so. Or, spend your bonding time with family wisely; instead of finding gifts for your kids to give grandma and grandpa, save yourself an extra shopping trip and sit down together to handcraft something special. Not only will you save time and money, you’ll also have a wonderful family memory. And isn’t that what the holidays are supposed to be about?

4. Be Realistic

The holiday season is also a hectic one; unrealistically high expectations for yourself may cause your schoolwork to suffer. Trying to do too much will leave you drained and burnt out. Combat this by asking your family which holiday traditions they treasure the most, and cut out the rest. If your teenagers don’t enjoy holiday light shows anymore, then save yourself the trip and use it to get your schoolwork done instead. And when you’ve finished, you can spend your time doing the things your kids actually do like. Be reasonable with your time, and you can balance work and holiday fun.

5. Shop Smart

Obviously, you can save yourself a lot of time, money and hassle by shopping online. But being savvy about it can make all the difference. Give yourself a time limit to scour sites for the best deals and comparison shop. If you don’t find a better offer online after 10 minutes, stop, and move on. Most importantly, avoid or turn off any sale alerts. If you keep leaving your schoolwork behind to check your email inbox for the latest deals, you’ll never get it done. Save the emails for later; in a few hours, the sales will still be there.

6. Reward Yourself

Take breaks in between studying by giving yourself an extra holiday treat or two, or spend it with friends and family. To feel reenergized and refreshed, take a break that lasts 20-30 minutes, coincidentally, the same amount of time it takes to bake a batch of cookies or wrap up a few gifts! Whatever you do, take a break that is mentally or physically active, and you’ll be at your most productive when you return.  

7. If all else fails… Request a Course Extension

For many students, holiday homework is that one thing they dread the most. While holidays are surely for enjoying but let’s not forget the importance of homework. It might be stressful for students which may result in late assignments and submission of homework, but it is also important to remember that being stressed and submitting in later work will only have a bad effect over the grades. Hence, it is always advisable to start the holiday homework from the beginning of the holidays. In this article, you will find smart strategies to complete your holiday homework on time and enjoy it to the fullest.

1. Setting a schedule

Summer holidays are an ideal time to sit back, relax and have fun. It is a great time for students to take a break from their studies but due to this very reason, many students choose to ignore their holiday homework, leaving piles of assignments undone and later regretting it. The best way to overcome this is by planning and making a strict schedule. Planning is the key to completing all the tasks in time, so you are left with plenty of time to enjoy your vacations without any stress.

2. Distraction free environment

As we are living in the era of technology, the constant from our cell phones makes it harder to concentrate and focus on the task we are doing. This technology is a mode of distraction. Try to switch off your phones while working on your holiday homework because this will surely help you pay attention and get your work done faster.

3. Beginning from day one

Many students pile up their homework until the very last moment. Try starting your homework from day one, the moment you start getting the assignments. This is the best advice. Take out an extra thirty minutes daily and start solving your assignments. This will lighten your weight of work during the holidays, and you will be done with the work sooner.

4. Gather relevant resources

This is one of the most important steps that many ignore. Start gathering all the information required for your assignments so that you can be done with homework quickly. It will save you a huge chunk of time and the best part is that once you get done with one assignment, you can also consider getting help from other sources and finish those assignments on time.

5. Pick your subjects of interest

7. Take plenty of breaks

Mostly people need breaks between subjects to freshen up their minds. Stick to a break schedule of maximum 10 to 20 minutes. Students can take active breaks which is a great way to keep your energy up while on the other hand, tech breaks are also awesome in which you can watch your favorite shows or just use social media. But tech breaks tend to stretch for a much longer period than originally intended. Do take breaks in between, that is physically and mentally active and you will be at your most productive form when you return to doing your tasks.

How many times have you found yourself still staring at your textbook around midnight (or later!) even when you started your homework hours earlier? Those lost hours could be explained by Parkinson’s Law, which states, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, if you give yourself all night to memorize those geometry formulas for your quiz tomorrow, you’ll inevitably find that a 30 minute task has somehow filled your entire evening.

We know that you have more homework than ever. But even with lots and lots to do, a few tweaks to your study routine could help you spend less time getting more accomplished. Here are 8 steps to make Parkinson’s Law work to your advantage:

1. Make a list

This should be a list of everything that has to be done that evening. And we mean, everything—from re-reading notes from this morning’s history class to quizzing yourself on Spanish vocabulary.

2. Estimate the time needed for each item on your list

You can be a little ruthless here. However long you think a task will take, try shaving off 5 or 10 minutes. But, be realistic. You won’t magically become a speed reader.

3. Gather all your gear

Collect EVERYTHING you will need for the homework you are working on (like your laptop for writing assignments and pencils for problem sets). Getting up for supplies takes you off course and makes it that much harder to get back to your homework.

The constant blings and beeps from your devices can make it impossible to focus on what you are working on. Switch off or silence your phones and tablets, or leave them in another room until it’s time to take a tech break.

5. Time yourself

Noting how much time something actually takes will help you estimate better and plan your next study session.

6. Stay on task

If you’re fact checking online, it can be so easy to surf on over to a completely unrelated site. A better strategy is to note what information you need to find online, and do it all at once at the end of the study session.

7. Take plenty of breaks

Most of us need a break between subjects or to break up long stretches of studying. Active breaks are a great way to keep your energy up. Tech breaks can be an awesome way to combat the fear of missing out that might strike while you are buried in your work, but they also tend to stretch much longer than originally intended. Stick to a break schedule of 10 minutes or so.

8. Reward yourself! 

Finish early? If you had allocated 30 minutes for reading a biology chapter and it only took 20, you can apply those extra 10 minutes to a short break—or just move on to your next task. If you stay on track, you might breeze through your work quickly enough to catch up on some Netflix.

Our best piece of advice? Keep at it. The more you use this system, the easier it will become. You’ll be surprised by how much time you can shave off homework just by focusing and committing to a distraction-free study plan.

How to get started and on top of your holiday homework

We know school has finished, or is just about over for the year for most students, and the last thing you probably want to think about right now is completing your holiday homework.  Let us tell you it is important to do, particularly for those in senior years at school, and that you want to get on top of your holiday homework early!

Unfortunately most students will push holiday homework aside and not even start to look at it until maybe sometime the week before school goes back.  Don’t let this be you as it will just create unnecessary stress and pressure.  Whilst you are not expected to study for 8 hours a day over the holidays, it is important you do set aside time to prepare and complete what you have been assigned to do as a minimum.

When working with our current students we have highlighted they would be better to start now and spread out what they need to do by chipping away at it.  For may we have set them the a goal of trying to get most of it done prior to Christmas and then reviewing again just before they go back.  Do you think you could give that a go too?

So how do you get started and on top of your holiday homework? Steps to take:

• The second step is to work out what order you are planning to do it in and then allocate time to each task – naturally it is holidays so if you were planning to do a task tomorrow and something comes up just reschedule it until the next day or another time – you can be flexible!

• If you have had a step up to the next year level it is also important to re read any notes you have taken to assist consolidating that knowledge now rather than not doing anything with them until you go back to school.

A few other things that you can do include:

• going through your school notes from this past year and work out what materials you might like to reference again next year ie those subjects that you are continuing with and put them somewhere easily accessible.
• working out where your dedicated study space, or spaces, will be and set them up ready to work at.  Purchase any necessary stationery, books or supplies you need.

All we can do is to urge you to take notice of this advice and ensure you won’t be one of those students rushing to get your work done at the last minute.  For those of you in Year 12 it will be much better to start the year ahead wouldn’t you agree?

Learning with Fun: how to enjoy Holiday homeworks

Summer holidays mean relax : students can finally take a break and spend some time with their friends and families. Assigning them books to read, exercises to complete and problems to solve is an outdated homework model. Thanks to education technology , it is now easier than ever to stimulate students during holidays , motivating them to keep on training their mind. Here are some ideas.

But first, catch their attention and enthusiasm

Before using smart tech tools to engage students and help them to enjoy the summer learning activities, it is important to understand their needs and catch their attention , improving their motivation and enthusiasm. This has nothing to do with technology. It is a previous process that teachers should conduct face to face in the classroom.

Rule #1: appeal to students’ interests

Students enjoy their homework when it sounds funny, interesting, relevant to them: that’s why teachers should incorporate what their learners know and love in the summer assigments. How? First of all, taking a poll to find out what the majority of the class is into – sports, arts, nature? – and then creating a way to integrate the favourite subjects into the summer homework. Appealing to students’ interests is a great motivation driver!

Rule #2: keep it short

Holiday homework has the purpose to practice – or extend – those concepts learned at school during the school year. The duration of homework per day depends on the purpose . The National PTA (Parents Teacher Association, U.S.A.) recommends 10-20 minutes of homework in the 1st grade, arriving to 120 minutes of homework for a student in high school. But it is very tough to find a student who enjoys 2 hours of homework per day! In fact, consistent studies suggest that shorter – and more frequent – homework assignments are more effective , because learners are more likely to complete them.

Rule #3: stimulate sharing

During summertime, students prefer to stay outdoor, enjoying leisure with friends . Holiday homeworks can be a great opportunity to leverage on students’ cooperation, stimulating them with assignments including teamworks and activities to complete together with their classmates.

Rule #4: make it fun

Instead of force students to do traditional summaries regarding books they have read during summer, try to assign different kinds of homeworks, maybe including more subjects at the same time . An example: a written recap of summer holidays where students have to talk about the places they visited, merging this story with the music they listenend to, the histories they learnt and including even the photos they took during holidays. This could be a great way to test the students’ capability to deal with multitasks and activities of different nature. I have so many fond memories from holiday seasons growing up: the smell of delicious food being made by my Mexican and Filipino families, warm light on the faces of my relatives, and lots of laughter. As I got older, though, things changed—mostly because I had so much homework to do.

Instead of joking with our relatives at the holidays, my brother and I would often sequester ourselves at the edge of the room, thick textbooks open and pens in our hands. Sometimes, we’d miss events altogether. When we did attend, the ramifications could be intense. During one spring break, I chose to go to an Easter party with my family. But by midnight, I was stress-weeping because I had so much work to do by the next day.

As a teacher, I now understand the temptation to give work over school breaks. There never seems to be enough time to do the projects or read the texts I’d like to with my kids, and asking students to work or read during breaks eases that crunch. I also worry that my students will lose some of their learning in the weeks they are gone.

Recently, though, my school created a new homework policy that, among other things, encourages us to avoid giving students work over extended school breaks. Our administration cited studies that raise questions about the benefits of hefty doses of homework.

I worried about how this new plan would affect my curriculum pacing, and about what my students might “lose.” But I realized that my concerns were really about my desires, not what was best for my students.

The new policy led me to re-evaluate my assignments and timing, and I ended up being able to make adjustments so my kids could complete necessary projects without working when they should be recharging. I’d worried about my students’ learning, but recent research challenges our long-held belief that students’ learning “slides” significantly over long breaks.

Taking the stress of homework out of my students’ holiday breaks is important. They deserve an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate as much as I do—particularly if they are overscheduled to begin with. Young or old, we all need rejuvenation time. In addition, more studies are demonstrating the benefits of down time for students. Having unstructured time recharges them, but also allows their brains to build connections that strengthen and improve their executive functioning.

We need to be mindful of other factors that complicate homework assignments over holiday breaks. We don’t always know what our students’ lives are like outside our classrooms. Do they struggle with access to the resources necessary to complete assignments? Do they have stressful home situations?

Here are a few ways we can send our students off on a positive note when they leave us for holiday breaks. I’m trying them myself this winter!

Provide activities that support students reconnecting with themselves, their loved ones, or their community.

While we want to avoid giving mandatory work to students, we can offer opportunities and ideas for learning-friendly activities they can do during their break. Maybe that’s an optional/extra credit project that asks students to interview a family or community member (though we should also provide time after break for those who couldn’t work over break). Or maybe we can offer students some ideas about how they could use their time to take care of themselves or their communities. We could provide reflection questions once they’re back from break, to help them find meaning in the experience. Encouraging students to use their time to volunteer or take care of themselves allows us to help our kids grow not just as students, but as people.

Offer opportunities to find a new passion, set goals, or reflect.

While some students may travel or connect with family, some of our kids may have a lot of free time over their break. We can encourage them to use the time to set goals for the year, dream big and draw or write their five-year plan (remind them this is for fun and plans will change!), or reflect on their year or life so far. We can also encourage students to discover something they’re passionate about, or use the time to pursue something they love.

Deepen your relationships with students and allow them to open up to you.

Sometimes, our kids are simply not given the space to dive deeply into something that lets them tell us who they are. Give students a project that allows them to explore their identity or have them write a story about their lives. This will not only provide some critical thinking, reading, or writing enrichment, but more importantly will provide valuable insight into our students’ lives and help us build deeper connections with our students. We can return the favor by completing the project ourselves or writing a story and sharing it with them.

After the break, see what stuck with students.

Instead of returning from break with the mindset of what was “lost,” give students a chance to share everything they remember from the last unit. Instead of assuming they all had a great time they want to share, welcome kids back with an opportunity to celebrate the experiences that stuck with them from their breaks. Help students generate a class-created study guide so they can review what they learned before the break. This gives them space to support one another and remind each other what they learned, as well as gives us an opportunity to praise students for what they’ve retained. It also provides important feedback for us on what stuck over the break and what we need to reteach.

Ultimately, our students look to us not just for academic growth, but to support their growth as human beings as well. Taking away homework stress over break may cause us to change our short-term plans, but providing them with opportunities and resources instead can have some long-term benefits that can change their self-perception and their lives more than a packet of homework ever could.

With a good schedule, you won’t have to worry about missing homework assignments or not having enough time to finish them, and it’s surprisingly easy to put one together. Not sure where to start? Understanding What Needs To Get Done

• The subject or course in which the work is assigned (for example, Spanish , algebra , French or English )
• Know what you're expected to hand in or do and ask if you do not understand (for example, turn in an essay , develop a PowerPoint presentation, or take a test.)
• The details of your assignments (for example, double-spaced or single-spaced, blue ink or black).
• Page numbers (which pages you need to read, study, or refer to complete your assignment.)
• Due date of the assignment.

Getting All of Your Homework Done

• To solve this problem, if you cannot meet all the deadlines, use a static priority rate-monotonic policy. Find the course that releases new homework the most frequently, and list it the highest (do the work first), and so forth. This is mathematically optimal among all static-priority scheduling policies. In other words, if ANY static priority scheme can meet all the deadlines, the rate-monotonic static priority scheme will meet all the deadlines, too. When the static priority scheme misses deadlines, it is deterministic - the lowest priority class assignments will be skipped, so it behaves predictably when you are overloaded. If certain assignments have the same due date, then start with the one(s) that are hardest or will take the longest.

• If you have a five-page English paper due on Friday, evenly spread the total amount of hours you believe it is going to take to complete the paper between each day.

How To Finish Summer Homework Assignments: 14 Tips To Save Your Child’s Summer

Many schools assign homework for students to complete before they return to class in September. This results in both parents and students having to learn how to finish summer reading and homework while balancing fun summer activities.

This summer, school is out and homework is in.

If your child has been putting off a pile of summer homework and reading assignments—he or she is not alone.

Reading books and writing assignments during the summer may not sound appealing to many students—or parents. But summer assignments are a great way to combat the effects of Summer Learning Loss and keep your child’s brain active over the break.

14 Tips For Finishing Your Summer Homework Assignments

Make a game plan, tip 1: take a (quick) break.

It’s hard to go from a full year of schoolwork to tackling summer homework right off the bat. Let your child take a week off of homework at the start of the summer. This will give his or her brain a chance to relax and reset, and enjoy taking part in fun summer activities like sports.

Tip 2: Review Project Requirements

Don’t have your child dive head-first into his or her homework assignments. Review the expectations of each project with your child and discuss how much time he or she will need to complete them.

It would be a shame to waste time redoing a project because your child didn’t understand it initially. Reviewing all requirements is an important first step to starting off on the right foot.

Tip 3: Break Down Each Project Into A Series of Goals

Think about which assignments will take the longest and what your child will need to complete them during the summer. Break these larger assignments into a series of goals that need to be met to complete the project.

Examples of goals include “read 2 chapters per week” or “write essay introduction by July 15th”.

Set Aside The Right Amount Of Time

Tip 4: plan a weekly summer homework schedule.

This should be similar to a school year homework schedule, but altered for the summer. T he ideal amount of time to spend doing summer homework per week is 2-3 hours , so figure out where that time fits into your child’s average summer week.

Tip 5: Make A List Of Supplies & Resources

Your summer adventures could take you and your child to a wide variety of places. Make sure you both know what to bring with you so your child can tackle homework when not at home.

Examples of supplies include:

• Textbooks or Assigned Novels

Tip 6: Choose Assignment Topics Based On Interest, Not Length

Sometimes students are given options when it comes to topics to research or books to read over the summer. Encourage your child to make these decisions based on the topics that interests him or her most—not which is “easiest”. This will result in your child enjoying his or her work, and allow him to benefit more from it.

Help Your Child Do Work On-The-Go

Tip 7: adjust your homework schedule for trips & vacations.

Exploring new places is an amazing learning experience, so don’t feel like you should sacrifice them for more homework time. Instead, plan your child’s homework schedule around these day trips and vacations.

If you know your child won’t have time to complete work while you’re away on a longer trip, make up those hours in the weeks before and after your trip.

Tip 8: Tackle The Work Your Child Can Do On-The-Go

While writing an essay is a project to save for when you return home, there are assignments that your child can tackle from just about anywhere. Options for homework to do on vacation include projects that are doable in small chunks—like reading a book or completing a math worksheet.

Tip 9: Bring Your Child’s Supplies With You

Remember that supplies list you created? Make sure you pack that backpack and bring it with you on your trip! It’d be a waste to find a spare hour to finish that math assignment, only to realize your child left his or her calculator at home.

Tip 10: Capitalize On The Quiet Times

Even the busiest trips include some quiet time. If you’re early for a dinner reservation, have your child complete a chapter of reading while you wait. Or, encourage your child to wake up 20 minutes early to answer some math questions without disruption.

Build A Support Team For Your Child

Tip 11: schedule a weekly workdate for your child & a friend.

There’s no reason your child has to work through summer homework alone. Make a weekly work date with a friend where they can tackle summer assignments together. If that friend is in the same class as your child, they can even discuss questions and challenges together. Build A Support Team For Your Child

Tip 12: Review Your Child’s Progress Every Week

Each week, speak with your child about the work he or she accomplished, and what is planned for the week ahead. If you know your child will be busy soon, work together to reorganize his or her homework schedule.

Tip 13: Touch Base With a Tutor (Or Enrol In Summer Learning Program)

A new set of eyes can make all the difference in making sure your child gets his or her summer assignments done efficiently and effectively. Your child’s tutor will be able to give constructive feedback and turn this feedback into goals for the upcoming school year.

And Most Importantly…

Tip 14: reward your child with summer fun.

Is your area crying out for a new supermarket to broaden your options and push prices down with a bit of competition?

Last month, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket - Aldi - asked shoppers to get in touch with their views on where it should open new stores.

The discount chain says it received thousands of replies, which it has used to hone its search for new store sites.

At the moment, Aldi has more than 1,020 stores. It says it wants more than 1,500 stores across the UK in the long run.

The 27 areas of priority to Aldi are:

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: "We want to make high quality food accessible to all, but we can’t do that while there are still some towns and areas that either don’t have an Aldi or have capacity for additional stores.

"We recognise there is huge demand in certain regions for more stores, which is why we decided to get the public’s input on our latest list of priority locations."

Which?, the consumer website and magazine, has ranked Aldi as the cheapest supermarket in the UK consistently this year.

Using a typical list of popular items, Which? ranked Aldi as the cheapest place to shop from January to May - with rivals Lidl coming in second.

However, for a longer list of items and a bigger shop, Asda and Morrisons have typically been the top two for Which? this year.

There could be good news on the horizon for borrowers, as an economist says the Bank of England is likely to cut interest rates in August.

Michael Saunders, a former member of the Monetary Police Committee (MPC), said the Bank has "clearly signalled" it wants to cut rates soon "if data are okay".

He told the Reuters Global Markets Forum that inflation and wage figures would need to align with the MPC's forecasts back in May.

"If so, I would expect the rest of the internal [members of the MPC] to move as a bloc to vote for a cut," he said, saying that markets had been given enough warning.

The BoE  held interest rates  at 5.25% for the seventh time in a row last week despite inflation falling to its target of 2%.

Mr Saunders predicted that the Bank would slash rates seven times in increments of 25 points by the end of next year, bringing the headline rate "close" to what he calls a neutral rate of 3.5%.

"I expect two to three cuts this year, the rest next year - again, depends a bit on the monthly data," he said.

The government has accredited three new forms of ID for purchasing restricted goods and services.

Lloyds Bank Smart ID, Post Office EasyID and Yoti ID can now be used to watch age-restricted films in cinemas, enter gambling premises, or pay for tattoos and tanning salons.

They cannot be used to buy alcoholic drinks in pubs and shops, but are recognised when buying alcohol online, along with tobacco, vapes, lottery tickets and fireworks.

"More UK businesses can now accept our Digital IDs to reduce the risk of fake IDs, increase compliance and improve the customer experience," said Robin Tombs, CEO of Yoti.

He said more than four million people have already downloaded a Digital ID app. 

"This is a strong sign that people are ready to embrace reusable Digital IDs and want a more secure, private and convenient way to prove who they are."

Each of the Digital ID apps includes the approved PASS hologram.

Most of us know the feeling of rushing back to your car when you realise your ticket is about to run out.

The good news is, new rules mean you won't have to race back quite as breathlessly in future.

Drivers are to get a 10-minute grace period when their time runs out at private car parks.

The changes are coming in after industry bodies the British Parking Association (BPA) and the International Parking Community (IPC) published a new code of conduct.

However, the AA said it still leaves room for drivers to be ripped off because it misses out "desperately needed" measures such as a cap on charges.

The electric carmaker Tesla is recalling more than 11,000 of its new Cybertruck vehicles after safety regulators found a potentially dangerous fault with its giant windscreen wiper. 

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also said a trim in the boot may be improperly attached. 

"Excessive electrical current can cause the front windshield wiper motor controller to fail," the safety administration said in a recall acknowledgement letter. 

Tesla said it would replace the wiper motor at no cost to owners. 

It comes after nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks were recalled in April to fix an accelerator pedal pad that could come loose. 

Mass production of the vehicle, which starts at a price of $79,990 (£63,130), is expected to start next year. 

It's not yet known how many trucks have gone to consumers, but the Blade Runner-inspired car has been plagued by problems. 

Customers of both Tesco and OVO Energy are entitled to 2,500 free Clubcard points, the supermarket has announced.

The points can be redeemed as a £25 voucher or at double their value with Clubcard reward partners.

Customers can unlock the points by linking their accounts with both companies.

"The cost of living remains a key challenge for households and our partnership with Tesco is one of the many ways in which we are giving back to our customers with rewards that they can spend how they choose," said Mat Moakes, chief commercial officer at OVO.

New customers can link their Tesco Clubcard account when they sign up as an OVO customer, while existing OVO customers can log into their account, go to their profile, click "our partners", and select the Tesco Clubcard logo.

Want to see a show in London this summer without breaking the bank? 

You're in luck - as new data has revealed the most affordable musicals to see in the capital right now. 

The data, collated by theatre ticket site SeatPlan , shows the most affordable musical to see in London right now is Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York), with the average cheapest ticket price at £17.90. 

The rom-com musical follows a British boy (Dougal), who lands in New York for his dad's second wedding. 

At the airport, he meets the bride's sister, and a quirky, offbeat love story ensues.

Also in the top 10 are Marie Curie The Musical (£20), Guys And Dolls (£23.90) and Sister Act (£26.40). 

Shows are ranked by the average price of the cheapest ticket, with the top ranked show having the lowest price.

On the flip side, the data also revealed the most expensive tickets, by analysing internal pricing data for musicals from SeatPlan.com. 

Musicals including Cabaret (£85.10), Mean Girls (£64.60) and Starlight Express (£43.70) make up this list...

If you've been reassured by positive recent news on inflation and a widely anticipated cut in interest rates later this year, unfortunately the Bank of England has a worrying update for mortgage payers.

About three million UK households are still set to witness hikes in their mortgage repayments over the next two years, the Bank has said.

Its Financial Policy Committee (FPC) added there are likely to be "very large increases" of more than 50% for the mortgages of around 400,000 households.

But the central bank stressed that UK lenders are still in a strong position to support households and businesses, even if the economic backdrop worsens.

The concerning update is in the Bank's latest Financial Stability Report.

It also showed that most households have already had an increase in their mortgage rates since borrowing costs began rising substantially in 2022.

Why is the outlook so bad if interest rates are expected to fall?

Interest rates are at a 16-year-high of 5.25%, with the central bank voting to maintain the figure for a seventh consecutive meeting earlier this month.

But many economists have predicted the base rate could be reduced at the Bank's next vote in August.

However, at the moment, around 35% of households with mortgages, or more than three million, are paying below 3% for a range of reasons - like existing deals which pre-dated the recent crisis - and are expected to see an increase between now and the end of 2026.

A typical household rolling off a fixed-rate mortgage before the end of 2026 is due to face a jump of around £180 a month, the report said.

It highlighted that an "increasing proportion" of households have been choosing to borrow over a longer period of time, reducing monthly repayments but leaving them with more debt to service over time.

Higher mortgage rates have resulted in many households and renters reducing their savings, the Bank also found.

PrettyLittleThing is facing more criticism after announcing it would issue refunds on delivery subscriptions for accounts it has banned for returning too many items.

The online fashion giant says it will refund outstanding gift cards and store credit, as well as £9.99 to closed accounts which had already purchased its royalty service entitling them to unlimited next day delivery for a year.

The company said: "We have noticed an extremely high returns rate from a small pool of customers who have demonstrated behaviours that were inconsistent with what we experience with the rest of our customer base.

"The actions taken are not designed to limit our customers who do need to return or deter them from returning, it was taken to address a small proportion of customers who have a high returns rate."

PrettyLittleThing added it does not plan to close any further accounts.

Some customers were not happy with the response, with one posting on X: "This is bullshit my last return was December 2023... and of course you turned off the comments."

Another wrote: "PrettyLittleThing expects us to order our clothes twice because their sizing is off and is closing people's accounts because of frequent returns. What a way to ruin your own business."

Analysts are crediting strong demand for technology-related stocks amid the rush for AI.

They also point to the growing hope among investors for a late summer/early autumn interest rate cut by the US central bank.

Amazon's shares ended the session on Wall St almost 4% up at $193 apiece.

The FTSE 100 has had a fairly muted start after falling almost 0.3% yesterday.

The index was one point up at 8,226 in early dealing.

In the wider market, Halfords stock was trading 6% lower.

The cycle sales and motor-focused retailer had earlier reported a fall in annual profits of almost a fifth and said that trading remained "soft".

The message to the market from Currys, the electricals chain, was more upbeat.

It revealed a 10% lift to its bottom line in the year to 27 April and said it was more confident about demand ahead.

Currys shares were 1% down, however, potentially reflecting concerns that its profit performance was not driven by higher sales.

We’re just days away from the NBA draft, and the league is buzzing! It’s somehow been only a week since the Boston Celtics finished off the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals, but the offseason is already in full swing. Here are seven observations on the latest news and what to expect in the days and weeks to come.

1. The Oklahoma City Thunder Gain More Than Alex Caruso in the Josh Giddey Trade

It’s not often that we see a simple one-for-one trade in the NBA, but that’s what we got Friday when the Thunder and Bulls swapped Josh Giddey and Alex Caruso. Giddey is only 21 years old and has a chance to become a very good 6-foot-8 playmaker for Chicago. Even though it’s shocking that the Bulls didn’t manage to get one of OKC’s picks in the deal, it was still worth trading a 30-year-old, oft-injured role player for Giddey. But as a limited shooter, Giddey didn’t fit in on OKC’s starting lineup and wasn’t willing to come off the bench for a franchise that is ready to contend.

The Caruso acquisition gives Oklahoma City an elite defender, a 38 percent 3-point shooter, and an All-World do-whatever-it-takes-to-win type of player. Losing Giddey is also addition by subtraction for Oklahoma City. He was third on the Thunder in touches per game (56.5) and pick-and-rolls per game (4.6), behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams during the regular season. In the playoffs, Giddey’s touches plummeted, which pushed him away from the ball and took away his value on the court.

Without Giddey, who required touches to make a notable impact, Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace will be able to absorb more responsibility. The Giddey-for-Caruso trade benefits those two second-year players more than anyone.

Wallace ran only 101 pick-and-rolls in 92 games last season, including the playoffs, per Synergy Sports. That’s down from 257 possessions in 32 games as a Kentucky freshman. Though Wallace isn’t a dynamic creator who breaks down defenders, he’s capable off the dribble and limits turnovers. Since he’s a knockdown shooter, he doesn’t need the ball in his hands to contribute offensively; as a guard who will turn just 21 next season, he will merely benefit from more reps.

The Thunder can also now be even more creative with Holmgren, who, at 7-foot-1, is a talented shot creator and scores efficiently using ball screens. OKC scored 1.08 points for each pick-and-roll run by Holmgren last season, but he ran only 78 of them. Giddey logged 388, and now a large chunk of them will go to Holmgren.

Whether Caruso, Wallace, or Lu Dort is involved, the Thunder will be able to run inverted actions for Chet to create off the dribble, pull up and shoot, drive, or find an open teammate.

Defenses will inevitably switch ball screens, which could lead to Chet getting more isolation and post-up reps; he had only 147 last season despite his efficient scoring and playmaking as a rookie. As good as Holmgren was last season, expect him to reach an even higher level with more touches.

So while the trade was technically a one-for-one, the Thunder didn’t just receive Caruso. They also created more developmental opportunities for the other talented young players on their team, raising their ceiling in both the short and long term.

2. The Atlanta Hawks’ Uncertain Draft Night Plans

It’s still unclear what Atlanta will do with the first pick in Wednesday’s draft. A little over a week ago, I reported that UConn center Donovan Clingan impressed Hawks brass in a private workout . Clingan remains one of their top choices. But I’m told that the Hawks would ideally prefer to trade down to take the 7-foot-2 sophomore center, rather than do so with the first choice.

If the Hawks choose to keep Trae Young, Clingan would be a perfect fit. At 20 years old, Clingan is already an excellent screener and finisher at the rim who also displays some playmaking on the short roll and skill in the post. In a sense, he’d be a more advanced option than any of the ball-screen partners Trae has had before. And as an excellent interior defender with a massive 7-foot-7 wingspan, he could help the Hawks build the best defense they’ve ever had. Clingan is my second-ranked player , in part because he’s a safe pick who at worst will be a high-level two-way center. And if his offense blossoms, he could be great.

The Hawks are still reviewing all their options, though, which is why on Sunday they hosted G League forward Matas Buzelis for his first workout with the franchise, according to league sources. Buzelis is the third-ranked prospect on my board because he’s a tenacious 6-foot-9 defender who also brings great feel as a connective playmaker and flashes scoring upside.

With so much attention on Clingan and the French prospects Alex Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher, Buzelis has been an overlooked option at the top of the draft. But last week, he also spent time visiting the Spurs (fourth pick), and he has previously worked out with both the Wizards (second) and Pistons (fifth). League sources say that much like the Hawks, the Wizards and Rockets (third) are also listening to trade offers for their selections. There are no locks yet, whether it’s the pick or the team, so we could be in for some big surprises.

3. What Are the Portland Trail Blazers Up To?

Leading up to the draft, there’s a lot of focus on the Spurs, who own the fourth and eighth picks. But the Trail Blazers also own two lottery picks: the seventh and 14th. ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reported earlier this month that the Trail Blazers hosted Clingan for a workout and he “isn’t expected to drop past them” with the seventh pick. This report stood out to people around the NBA for myriad reasons, in part because Givony worked for years at Draft Express with Mike Schmitz, who now has an influential position within Portland’s front office. But also because the Blazers already have two centers in Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams.

Does Portland’s reported interest in Clingan suggest that the team is just in “best player available” mode, no matter the position? Or could it say something about the Blazers’ belief in Ayton as a long-term piece? Or the health of Williams? My gut feeling is that it’s all of the above but that it’s more about Ayton than Williams. Health has always been an issue for Williams, but Ayton has only two years remaining on his contract and remains frustratingly inconsistent.

The Blazers also worked out Purdue center Zach Edey earlier in the month, and people around the NBA believe that they are also extremely high on him—not just for the 14th pick, but for their first choice at no. 7. The bottom line is that the Blazers seem to be looking to come away with a center to pair with Scoot Henderson and their other young pieces. And if Portland ends up with Clingan, Edey, or another center on Wednesday night, then perhaps there will be a domino effect this summer, with Ayton and Williams trades to follow.

4. Offseason Plan A Is Not Always Better Than Plan B

Teams will enter this summer with grand plans. Some will get everything they hoped for. Others will need to pivot. But only time will tell what was for the best.

One year ago, the Celtics entered the offseason knowing that they needed to make changes after falling short in the playoffs for the ninth straight year. League sources say that Boston’s top priority was acquiring Kristaps Porzingis, who had three strong performances against the Celtics during his lone season with the Wizards and scored 32 points on just 21 shots and had 13 rebounds and six assists in their third matchup.

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens worked quickly to pursue Porzingis and ended up landing him and two first-round picks for Marcus Smart and one second in a three-way deal with the Grizzlies and Wizards.

But as was widely reported at the time, the Celtics originally agreed to a deal that would have sent Malcolm Brogdon to the Clippers, instead of Smart to the Grizzlies. Concerns about Brogdon’s health caused the Clippers to back out, forcing Boston to pivot to a Smart-based deal. At the time, many Celtics fans were crushed. Smart was a lifelong Celtic and a fan favorite. It hurt that the team dealt him instead of Brogdon, especially for a player as injury prone as Porzingis.

But there’s a detail missing from that initial saga: Sources from around the league say that once that KP-for-Brogdon deal was complete, Smart still would have been sent to the Grizzlies for Tyus Jones and two firsts.

So even though it initially appeared that the Celtics would have acquired Porzingis without giving up Smart, he was going to be dealt anyway. If those two original deals had happened as Boston planned, there would have been no realistic way for the Celtics to acquire Jrue Holiday once he unexpectedly became available later in the summer. The Celtics would have ended up with KP and Jones instead.

Maybe the Celtics would have ended up winning the title anyway without Holiday. We’ll never know. But these failed and completed trades serve as a prime example that sometimes plan A isn’t always for the best. Building a championship roster is both an art and a science, and a lot of good fortune is involved, too.

5. Is This It for the Warriors’ Core?

In recent weeks, Klay Thompson has dealt with his uncertain contract status with Golden State by unfollowing the Warriors on Instagram, removing photos of his teammates, and responding to trolls. These are actions you’d expect from an angsty teenager who got cut from his middle school team, not a four-time champion who’s been paid more than $250 million in his Hall of Fame–worthy career.

Contract negotiations can get ugly. The 34-year-old wants at least a three-year deal and more money than the Warriors are willing to spend. But they need to think about their future, both in the remaining years when Steph Curry is still a dominant player and beyond.

Meanwhile, Thompson has spent the past two seasons sulking because he can’t come to terms with his reduced role. Klay took the second-most shots on the team last season despite ranking eighth in true shooting percentage of the 12 Warriors players who received at least 500 minutes. If he stays, even on a discount, that means he will continue to take minutes away from Moses Moody and shots from Brandin Podziemski.

Since returning from his devastating injuries—a torn ACL and a ruptured Achilles—Klay’s game has changed dramatically. He’s taking only 10 percent of his shots at the rim, a significant drop from his prime years. He’s now a one-dimensional shooting specialist, and on defense he’s become more of a target than a stopper.

Yet he’s handling the potential breakup like a self-sabotaging drama queen, making it seem like the Warriors might be better off without him. Why would they want him back if he’s going to be a malcontent who refuses to accept that he’s past his prime?

Thompson probably feels that he deserves a legacy contract from the Warriors. The franchise’s valuation has increased from the purchase price of $450 million in 2010 to more than $8 billion now, thanks in no small part to his contributions, alongside those of Steph and Draymond Green. But the Warriors already paid him about $90 million during the two and a half seasons he was out injured and about $100 million since then, while he’s been a shadow of his former self. That contract was his lifetime achievement payday.

Now, Klay faces a choice: stick with the core in Golden State and make the most of his twilight years, or head into the unknown. In the meantime, he should get off social media.

6. JJ Redick and the Lakers’ Offseason Decisions

I am a believer in JJ Redick’s potential as a head coach. There are few people I’ve met who are as meticulous as he is in his attention to detail. He is an obsessive worker. And he is fueled by competition, which is why he left a cozy media job for the pressure of coaching the Los Angeles Lakers. But no matter how much X’s-and-O’s intelligence he displays hosting a podcast or broadcasting a game, being a good coach is about implementing it all on the fly, incorporating lineups and adjustments all while managing egos and developing players.

We got an idea of Redick’s vision, according to The Athletic :

Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the meeting described Redick as “impressive” during his visit to Los Angeles. … He explained his decision-making process when it comes to strategy, how the analysis and empirical evidence would always guide his choices rather than preconceived notions or outdated beliefs. Redick described a system molded around this roster, focusing on elevating Anthony Davis’s involvement, particularly late in games, and alleviating the constant ballhandling duties on James by utilizing him more off the ball. Keeping James, who turns 40 in December, fresh down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs will be critical.

Keeping LeBron fresh means investing more in Austin Reaves than Darvin Ham was willing to. And it’ll be on Rob Pelinka to find someone better than D’Angelo Russell to play point guard. Shams Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show that the Lakers remain interested in Hawks point guard Dejounte Murray, whose two-way abilities could make him an ideal fit next to James and Reaves. But as Charania noted, it’s unclear whether the Hawks will trade Murray or Trae Young this summer, and their choice will be dependent on which player brings back greater value.

If Murray is L.A.’s target, then it’d be easier to match salaries in a trade for him before his contract extension kicks in on July 1. And if the Lakers are looking for a center to allow AD to play power forward more frequently, then perhaps there’s a deal to be done for both Murray and Clint Capela, who is being shopped around by the Hawks, according to league sources. Murray would help the backcourt. Capela would help the defense. Would Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and Russell plus picks get it done? There are no guarantees that it will work out for Redick as a head coach. But to increase the chances that it will, the pressure is on Pelinka and the Lakers front office to make appropriate changes.

7. Why I’m All In on Devin Carter and Reed Sheppard

I highly recommend giving the conversation a listen. But to summarize: Tom found that second-gen players have career lengths that average 2.3 years longer than all other draftees, and they perform 30 percent better than their expected draft position (using win shares as a metric). We spent extensive time discussing two players that fit that criterion in this upcoming class: Providence guard Devin Carter, whose dad, Anthony, played 13 years as an NBA role player, and Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard, whose dad won back-to-back college titles before playing 18 games with the Atlanta Hawks. Hey, a cup of coffee in the NBA counts, too.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I love Carter and Sheppard. Both of them are ranked in my top five. Both of them play with an advanced feel and grit that’s hard to be taught. Both of them, I believe, will have 10-plus-year careers in the NBA, which wouldn’t be too unusual considering the success rate of second-gen pros.

As the son of LeBron, Bronny James draws all the attention for obvious reasons . And he could someday pan out. But unlike James, it won’t take long for Carter and Sheppard to hear their names called on draft night.
