The original project of the building was called The Science and Culture House. It was designed to fulfill a number of functions, by serving as a planetarium, a cinema and a theater hall, and it was also the site for various Revolutionary holidays - presentations and demonstrations - during which the participants could march through the building. The huge structure was even spacious enough for cars and tractors to drive through it. The audience hall was planned to seat 3,000 people. By 1933, most of the construction work had been completed. However, in 1936 the plans were changed to convert the building into the Opera and Ballet Theater. In 1937 the project was awarded the Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. One of the most unique parts of the building is its cupola, which is 60 meters in diameter, but only 8 cm thick, and it does not have any trusses. The cupola is covered with thousands of metallic scales. By 1941, the building was basically complete, but construction work was stopped during WW II. It provided a place for safekeeping of exhibits evacuated from the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum, Tretiakov Gallery and the Hermitage. Leningrad (nowadays – St. Petersburg) Philharmonics musicians lived in Novosibirsk and gave performances here during the war. Nowadays, the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre repertoire is comprised of traditional performances of classical operas and ballets, as well as modern versions of classical operas by Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, Shostakovich, and Dashkevich, plus ballets with music by Tchaikovsky, Ribnikov, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, Aden, Minkus, Chopin, Glass and others. Figures & Statistics: Beginning of construction: May 1931 End of construction: 1944 The first performance: May 12, 1945 (M. Glinka opera Ivan Susanin) Theater building area: 11,837.8 m2 Theater building volume: 294,340 m3 (this is the biggest theatre building in Russia) Cupola: diameter - 60 meters; height - 35 meters Scene depth: 30 meters Fire curtain weight: 32 tons Chandelier: diameter – 6 meters; weight – 2 tons; material - crystal Number of seats: main hall – 1,774; concert hall – 375; small hall – 150
I've been working in Novosibirsk for over three years and must disagree with a previous reviewer , who said there was little to do in Novosibirsk. In fact, the city is teeming with culture. There are several conservatories, many theatres and music schools; but of course the great symbol is the Opera House in which (as other reviewers rightly say) the most wonderful ballet and opera is performed. The company ranks as only just behind the great Moscow Opera. For music lovers it is a must, as one will learn to appreciate the traditional styles of performance that have sadly passed out of fashion in the West. Ticket prices are 400 to 600 rubles (£8 to £12) for the most wonderful and comfortable seats. If you have never seen a Russian audience appreciate opera and ballet, it is worth coming just to take part in the wonderful atmosphere;the auditorium is always packed with people of all ages, including many well-behaved children and teenagers. The chandelier is reputed to be the biggest in the world, but I have not checked this claim. It's certainly enormous and imposing. The Opera House was begun just before the war and construction continued throughout the conflict: the opening night was Victory Day 1945. It's just undergone a spectacular restoration and everything is as it was in it's prime: no modern changes at all. In which Opera House in the West could one drink champagne (Ruusian) for 200 rubles a glass!!!
The theatre is a must for a visitor (if only because there's not that much to do in Novisibirsk). Seeing this stage – reputed to be the largest on the continent – also makes a good bragging point. The quality of the performances is uneven: some are slack and dusty, some are new and outlandishly designed. Something from a standard classic repertoire is usually a good choice: an opera by a Russian composer or one of those signature Russian ballets. A visiting soloist singing/dancing the main part is a sign of a better production. We found the ballet Corsaire goofy and poorly executed, but Prince Igor was a high-quality show and a pleasant surprise despite its duration (over 3 hrs). The building is in a fine, renovated state and has an exhibit of historic photographs on the second floor. Expect long lines for bathrooms in the intermissions: the pre-WWII design somehow didn't account for the ladies' needs.
Went to see Toska and enjoyed a very nice evening there. It is apparantely the biggest theatre in Russia (so I was told) and definitely worth a visit. With prices for the second best category at only RUB 600 it is also quite cheap compared to European Operas. The singing was excellent, the orchestra played flawlessly and they even serve good sparkling wine and small sandwiches during the breaks. Definitely worth a visit. Dress code is from very formal to casual, at least in the evening performance I was on Saturday evening.
Once in Novosibirsk everyone one have to stop and go here. I have seen an high level ballet performance. I enjoyed the cultural atmosphere that no longer I can find in Italy. You'll see families who enjoy the show (children, young, parents and grandparents).
Me and my husband were both first timers when it comes to Ballet and we felt that a "must do" when you visit Russia is to go to the Ballet or Opera. We saw the Cinderella performance and It was really beautiful. The theater itself was really clean and had has a magnificent chandelier hanging in the ceiling. The chairs are not that comfortable but since the Ballet had three acts we got to spread our legs in between! Ballet in Russia is simply something you need to do! Mrs K
