English: Our flexible English puts the teacher in control. Plan a sequence of lessons tailored to your class. Find out about the advantages of English blocks .

Year 1 English Homework

For many parents, homework is the only picture they get of what their child does at school. For this reason, Hamilton have put a great deal of effort into writing suitable, fun and home-friendly activities for children and parents to share together. Children will benefit and so will parents and teachers!

The activities rehearse core literacy skills that you may wish children to practise or keep on the boil. Read our English homework blog for more advice about using them.

year 1 homework autumn

Content covered in this activity : differences in weather between the seasons, characteristics of each season, reasons for the seasons, tilt of the Earth to the Sun, examples of plants and animals in different seasons.

This song: ‘The Seasonal Changes Song’ is perfect for the Y1 science unit called ‘Seasonal Changes’. However, since science knows no borders, it fits pretty much any science curriculum.

So go on; try a new type of relaxing educational activity with your kids - learning through song. It’s fun, it’s engaging, and it’s highly effective!

Associated keywords : the seasons, spring, autumn, fall, winter, snow, days are short, days drawing out, hibernation, tilt of the Earth, sun, frost, sprout, seeds, light and heat, crops, growth, deciduous, to shed, harvest, collecting nuts, short nights, day length.

How to get the best out of BrainySongs resources: Listen/watch the song video [link in download] a few times before completing the worksheet. Children absorb so much in this process, especially target vocabulary. Discuss/ask questions about the video pausing it as necessary.

These complimentary worksheets are part of a much larger resource available on our website. It is hoped that BrainySongs will stimulate a general curiosity in science, nature, and music at the same time.

Little Wandle

We are now using Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds Revised in our school.

Below you can find our Phonics and Early Reading policy.

You can also find our progression document, which shows the order of the letters and sounds, and the terms that they are taught in.

Please find below additional information regarding our new phonics and reading scheme - Little Wandle - Letters and Sounds revised

Why learning to read is so important

  • Reading is essential for all subject areas and improves life chances.
  • Positive attitudes to reading and choosing to read have academic, social and emotional benefits for children.

How children learn to read

  • Phonics is the only route to decoding.
  • Learning to say the phonics sounds.
  • By blending phonic sounds to read words.
  • Increasing the child's fluency in reading sounds, words and books.

Reading fully decodable books

  • Children must read books consistent with their phonic knowledge.
  • It is essential not to use other strategies to work out words (including guessing words, deducing meaning from pictures, context clues ot whole word recognition).
  • Books must be fully decodable and follow the Little Wandle scheme.
  • Children need to read books in a progressive sequence until they can decode unfamiliar words confidently.

The role of Parents and Carers

  • Have a positive impact on their child's reading.
  • Should model the importance if reading practice to develop fluency.
  • Reading at home encourages a love of books, along with developing vocabulary and discussion. Children will bring home two different types of books: reading practice (100%decodable) and a book to share for pleasure.
  • Give positive yet informative feedback in the reading diary.

Supporting your child with reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing to practise at home.

There are two types of book that your child may bring home:

A reading practice book . This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child, and they should be able to read this book mostly independently.

A sharing book.  Your child may not be able to read this on their own.  This book is for you to read and enjoy together.

Reading practice book

This book has been matched to your child's current reading level.  If your child is reading it with little help, please don't worry that it is too easy - your child needs ti develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book.  Remember to give them lots of praise - celebrate their success!  If they can't read a word, read it to them.  After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Sharing book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure.  The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.

Please remember that you shouldn't expect your child to read this alone.  Read it to or with them.  Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the character, explore the facts in a non-fiction book.  The main thing is that you have fun!

4 killed, including 2 children, in North Texas head-on crash, officials say

Four people were killed, including two children, in a head-on crash in Parker County on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The crash happened around 2:15 p.m. on Farm Road 51, just south of Friendship Road, which is in an area between Springtown and Weatherford, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release.

A 43-year-old woman and three passengers -- a 66-year-old man and two nine-year-old girls -- were heading north on 51 when a southbound vehicle veered into their lane and hit them head-on.

The woman survived the crash, but her three passengers died, the release said. The 66-year-old man was identified by officials as Gregory Daniel Schilb, of Springtown, while the two children's names have not been released.

The driver of the vehicle that crashed into them also died in the crash. She was identified as 29-year-old Kathryn Elizabeth Lain, of Boyd, according to the release.

Officials said it was unknown why Lain veered into the northbound lane and crashed into the other vehicle. More information about the crash was not released. Authorities are still investigating.

On Monday morning, the Springtown Independent School District posted about a crash. While the district did not name any of the victims, they said two of the victims who died were fourth-graders in the district. Also, a teacher at Goshen Creek Elementary School was severely injured in the crash, school district officials said.

"Our hearts ache for the families of those we lost, for our entire district, and for our community as a whole," the district statement said. "We are heartbroken to hear about any life that was lost during this tragedy. Life is so precious and way too short. During this difficult time, we ask that you hold them in your thoughts and prayers."
