A Day Without Electricity

Of all the inventions during the last two centuries, the invention of electricity has been the most wonderful and useful. Everywhere we find ourselves amid the. various kinds of appliances based on electricity. But seldom do we realize, how much we depend on it for the comfort of our daily life. This is because electricity is easily available to us. We realize its importance only when for a moment it stops working. I happened to realize its importance and power when in the month of July, we had to go without electricity for a full day.

It was 7.30 p.m. when there was a power break-down following a heavy thunder-storm. It not only uprooted the electric poles but damaged the transformer which supplied electricity to our locality. We had to live in dark for the whole night. We reported to the exchange but the response was more irritating than satisfying, as it would take twelve hours or so to regain the power supply.

We were to a great hardship. At night I could not study, though I tried to study in candle light but found myself unable to concentrate. There was hardly a speck of light visible. The whole colony was enveloped in “eternal gloom”. It looked like the city of the dead. There was no activity in the market too with all the shops closed.

The next morning newspaper reported several cases of accidents and incidents of robbery in various parts of our locality. As in the absence of light robbers had a golden chance to rob. In the absence of street light, the fast moving vehicles collided and led to serious accidents. All the road crossings where automatic signals were installed went out of order.

In school we could hardly concentrate on our lessons. The time seemed to drag on forever while we perspired in the humid atmosphere. On account of electricity failure, we missed our television lesson too. The power failure did not only cause inconvenience to students but to officers, factory owners and factory workers too. The house wives and cinema goers also suffered. As most of the factories had to close down and cinema halls had to postpone their shows.

When after about eighteen hours power supply was restored, I realized, how much we depend on this mysterious force of all machines and modern life.

In today’s era, electricity plays a vital role in our daily life, a day without electricity is very hard to imagine. In this contrary, we are going to present an essay on a day without electricity.

Imagine sitting a dark, confined space in absolute silence and no human being around. That’s how it would feel to live a day without electricity.

Firstly, let me list out what all I would not be able to do. I would have to say goodbye to my daily morning coffee as, without the help of my refrigerator, my milk would have gone bad. And black coffee is an atrocity that I cannot face, forget tasting.

With a grumpy start to my morning, I would enter my washroom to shower only to realize that today would be the day I freeze to death as my instant geyser would not be working.

With my body shivering and my teeth chattering, I would rush to my room only to realize that my phone is on 10 percent battery and my hairdryer will not switch on today. What a miserable situation it would be.

After getting ready somehow, I would rush downstairs to realize that after a long time, I will need to eat some fruit or ready-made items due to the uselessness of my toaster I would have to forgo my usual toast and jam for the day.

As I reach school, I realize it would turn out to be a fun day as due to the absence of electricity, we could be out of our classes for the entire day. It would turn out to be an unintentional picnic by itself. Well, the food may not be up to the mark due to obvious reasons but we would manage with what we have.

The ride back home after our usual class hours would be tiring and sweaty due to the lack of air-conditioning inside the bus, leaving us to battle the city’s humidity and pollution through the panes of our open bus windows.

On a much larger scale, there would be a global crisis as no electricity would mean complete darkness after sunset. It would also lead to a lapse of our economy as online trading and e-commerce would suffer losses of high stakes and fail to record every move or change in numbers and keeping track of the ever-changing stock market would be a whole new nightmare.

It would lead to various complications in the Healthcare industry as most Intensive care units rely on ventilators and various other pieces of equipment that rely on electricity to work and keep patients alive.

On a global stage, there would a standstill situation as getting messages across from one place to another would not be able to take place at a drop of a hat. Likewise, news agencies would have to step down for a day as neither would they be able to shoot any content nor would they be able to broadcast it for a day.

On an industry basis, there would be a huge slow down as almost all technology and machines would shut down for a day leaving production output to zero. Every IT company would face horrors as they would not be able to even implement their basis work for the day, leading to various complications and unwanted situations creating liabilities for the company.

While all of this would be on, there would another face to the entire situation as a whole.

Industries that implement and propagate usage of solar-powered systems would be able to work as usual without any hindrances. For various institutions, sustainable developments would be given first priority and put into use to set off the process of manufacturing again.

And while a majority of the population would miss out on the latest meme, or the launch of the latest song, they would feel a sense of gratification towards having reduced usage of electricity and leading the way to a more sustainable and pollution-free way of life.

A Day without Electricity

In an age of machines and a techno savvy generation the above sentence can evoke a shocked response. Rather, it would better be on the lines of —”we don’t won’t to imagine a day like that.” Electricity is an indispensable part of our life today. But supposing you do try and picture that scenario how different could your day be? Initially we would all fret and fume because it seems that life would come to us standstill. But it could also lead us to explore alternative avenues to spend the day.

Television watching would be drastically reduced. People working long hours on the computer could afford to stretch a bit and not be part of the “stiff neck clan’ for a day. Many tasks would have to be done manually and that would drive home the point as to how dependent we are on gadgets for our daily chores. The industrial sector which is largely ‘power driven’ would come to a grinding halt. Essential services like hospitals and transport would be badly affected. But the day could motivate us to take up our activity for which we rarely find time.

Candles, lanterns and earthen lamps would be used to drive away the darkness. Shops selling these would do brisk business and may put up a sign board saying ‘no stock’. Kids could get spooky ideas and enter into a realm of pure fantasy and indulge in pranks that could sometimes scare the daylights out of adults. The night sky would look so different. Stars above, but no neon lights blinking. The roads and the lanes bereft of street lights would look like a ‘no mans land’. Houses would be lit up with candles and lanterns whose flickering light would cast long shadows. Families and friends would sit together chatting or engaged in idle gossip and in-between lament about the fact as to “what a day it has been!”

It could also be used as a time to reflect on how our life sometimes falls into a particular pattern and only rarely do we deviate from it. When an aura of darkness envelops us, a ray of light brings in hope.

It is not all that long ago when we began using so many electrical appliances in everyday life. Japan’s first “pulsator-type” washing machine, a prototype of current models, reached the market in 1953. Its popularity exploded as it was a convenient product that considerably reduced household work loads. Full-scale television broadcasting also started in 1953. This year set a precedent for the expanding use of various home appliances; so much so that it was later referred to as “year one of electrification”.

Among these new appliances, the washing machine, refrigerator and black-and-white television set were called the “three sacred treasures” (referring to the Imperial regalia of Japan, the sword, mirror and jewel) that everyone longed for at that time. With incomes increasing as a result of rapid economic growth, consumer demand for these home appliances skyrocketed. By 1973 most households had purchased these 3 appliances.

Japan’s electricity use steadily increased starting around this time. Even after the “oil shock” of 1973, electricity use increased about 2.5 fold during the 35 years to 2008. The most substantial increases occurred in the consumer/household and transportation sectors. The increase in household use was partly due to changes in social structure, such as an increasing number of households, and also by changes in private lifestyles demanding more and more convenience and comfort. This was a time of “individual electrification” when each individual, rather than each household, came to own a set of electrical appliances.

Establishment of the Atelier Non-Electric

Despite these social trends, Yasuyuki Fujimura, a doctor of engineering and an inventor, has been advocating a “non-electric” lifestyle that intentionally avoids the use of electricity. The phrase “non-electric” may sound a little unfamiliar, but it is different from “anti-electrification” that condemns electricity on principle. The phrase is meant to communicate the idea that it should be possible to live happily and richly while enjoying a moderate level of comfort and convenience without depending on electricity.

Fujimura has a Ph.D. in physics and originally got a job at a major equipment manufacturer. He was an elite engineer involved in the development of advanced technologies including plasma processing machines, cogeneration systems and gas heat pumps. His turning point was when his newborn son was diagnosed with allergic asthma. As he found out, at that time, in the 1980s, there was a surprising increase in the number of children with allergies. As he continued his research, he learned about environmental problems. He realized that the environment was deteriorating and harming the health of children as one of the down sides of rapid economic growth fuelled by the vigorous promotion of scientific and technological advancement and the pursuit of more and more convenience and comfort.

To create a new lifestyle, Fujimura started to work on the theme of “non-electric” in 2000. In 2003, he established the Atelier Non-Electric and continues to develop many non-electric products.

Atelier Non-Electric is currently located at the foot of the Nasu Highlands, one of Japan’s major resort areas in northern Tochigi Prefecture. Transportation is convenient — Nasu is about 150 kilometers north of Tokyo and can be reached in 90 minutes by the Tohoku Bullet Train.

The approximately 1-hectare site is a kind of exhibition space that presents a “totally non-electric life.” A non-electric house utilizes chaff, whose heat insulation performance is as good as glass wool, to the maximum. A non-electric composting toilet uses the power of microorganisms, which can decompose human waste into manure without an electric pump. The non-electric bath house uses a variety of energies such as solar power, firewood, or even garbage. These non-electric facilities are located around a pond.

Refrigerator that cools without electricity

There are many interesting home appliances that can be operated without electric power in the atelier where various trial products are made, as well as in the main house. One example is a non-electric refrigerator. How can it refrigerate food without electric power? It uses a phenomenon called radiational cooling together with the natural convection currents of water.

Radiational cooling occurs when infrared radiation is emitted from an object’s surface, causing its temperature to decrease. On a clear night, infrared rays are emitted from the ground into the atmosphere, cooling the air down. This is why the night is extremely cold in the desert. Most people have experienced water’s natural convection currents when warm water rises while cold water sinks and pools at the lowest level.

The cooling unit of the refrigerator (capacity 200 litres) is made of metal that has high thermal conductivity. A large volume of water (about 250 litres) is stored around this unit as a coolant. Radiator panels are placed on top so that the inner surface of the panel touches the coolant water. The heat of things stored in the cooling unit is conveyed to the surrounding water by the metal, and the heat goes up by natural convection. Thus it is conveyed to the radiator panel, and emitted through radiational cooling.

The system is most efficient on a clear night when there is less water vapor in the air. One clear night (and sometimes even one cloudy night) every three days can keep the temperature inside the refrigerator at around 7 to 8 degrees Celsius even on a mid-summer day. This innovative refrigerator belies our present-day common sense assumption that things cannot be refrigerated without electricity.

Some values take precedence over comfort, convenience and speed

Another popular Atelier product is a handy non-electric coffee roaster. The roaster is made of aluminium and shaped like a saucepan with a handle. Raw green coffee beans are put into the pan and roasted on a gas stove for three to five minutes by shaking the pan right and left. The beans are roasted evenly and as lightly or deeply as the consumer prefers.

The process of roasting raw coffee beans, cooling them down, grinding them in a coffee mill and pouring fresh brewed coffee into a cup takes about 25 minutes. Not many people want to take such a lot of time to make a cup of coffee in today’s society, which requires speed everywhere and at all times. Fujimura did not actually expect much when he started to market the roaster.

This product, however, has sold some 8,500 units so far since it hit the market six years ago, even though it has not been widely advertised, except on the website of Atelier Non-Electric.

“I think it means there are more people enjoying the process,” Fujimura says. “So far in Japan, people have sought comfort, convenience, and speed. But we can’t always find happiness that way. I think the popularity of the roaster shows that some people have started thinking that speed is not always the best answer.”

What kind of technology does not hamper sustainability?

Although it is a very simple tool, it took six months to develop the roaster. Coffee beans need to be roasted evenly. The material used needs good thermal conductivity so that it will not take too long to roast beans. Also, the shape had to be designed so that the raw coffee beans roll around easily in the container. Furthermore, the sound of the rolling beans needs to be pretty and pleasant. “To make a good non-electric roaster, I needed to use my ingenuity. Thus it took me half a year,” Fujimura laughs.

These non-electric fridges are so simple that such mothers can easily set them up. We can fix what we make ourselves when it is broken. As science and technology advance, we need to take back technologies that anybody can build, use and repair. Fujimura thinks that is one of the keys to stopping runaway science and technology.

Rethinking affluence

The non-electric way of life that Fujimura suggests is not just a lifestyle without electricity. It also incorporates his philosophy on leading a happy and affluent life using appropriate technology without depending on energy and money.

Fujimura’s dream is to make the Non-Electric Atelier a theme park that showcases the many options we have for fun, affluence, and happiness, particularly in the area of housing. He wants to show that non-electric houses — even when they are built by non-professionals — are lovely yet strong, good for the health while consuming little or no energy, and furthermore can be built practically for free. He would like to make the atelier a kind of housing exhibit, and believes it will encourage people in the younger generation who feel they can’t afford to own a home.

Awareness of the energy crisis is growing worldwide and in Japan, where many people are re-thinking their energy supply after the Great East Japan Earthquake. In this context, on non-electric technology is becoming increasingly important.

Today as we live in a world of technology, one of the most basic necessities of life is electricity. Today we cannot imagine living without it. What if there was no electricity for an entire day! How would it feel? Well! It's Sunday morning and there's something different - no electricity the entire day. Life seems to have come to a standstill without electricity. My first custom of the day after waking up is to head towards the bathroom to brush my teeth, and have a shower. I experienced a chill when cold water hit me; I realized there is only cold water available. The geyser was not working as there was no electricity. Feeling refreshed and revitalized after a cold shower, I headed towards the frost free refrigerator for a snack, only to discover that the food in the refrigerator was warm and had been turned into something new. Refrigerators play an important role in food preservation, but without electricity they are useless. Surely a nice, hot cup of coffee would help me forget the ordeal that I was going through till now. So I ran to the coffee vending machine to have a cup of hot coffee, but realized that without electricity the coffee machine was anything but useful. My hopes of having coffee seemed more like a dream. Reading the Sunday newspapers I realized that there would be no electricity supply for the entire day. I could not watch my favourite TV programmes the entire day. The lift in my apartment was not working so I had to trudge up and down nearly becoming breathless. The exercise was helpful no doubt for my fitness! Just when I needed to send some urgent e-mails on my laptop, it shut down and I could not recharge the same. Co-incidentally, the gas also finished and neither did the induction cooker nor the microwave would work on account of power supply failure, and so I had to be satisfied with cold lunch. Well! Thank the weather, it was not so hot that day, or else I would have got roasted in the heat. Eventually, power supply was restored in the evening and the only thing that I could say was - what a relief! The incident also helped me appreciate the value of electricity as an essential resource. As I returned home from opera practice yesterday, I noticed a few slips of paper stuck to my door. “Oh great, more spam from the real world”, I thought. I check my real world mailbox maybe once a month since I throw out about 98% of what’s in there. Apparantly, those pizza guys selling their 62 topping medium pizzas for only $9.99 figured this out and started paying little kids to put up flyers on my door knob. So in general, chances are good that a piece of paper attached to my door is something I don’t want to read.

Fortunately, it turned out that none of the three pieces of paper on my door is spam. Unfortunately, I wished they were. Two of them were 2nd and final attempt UPS delivery notices. Great! My electric piano has been scheduled for a nice journey back to Amazon! Would have been nice if UPS had informed me of their definition of 2nd attempt though. For some reason, I have this wild notion that 2nd attempts are generally preceded by 1st attempts.

The other piece of paper was Pacific Gas & Electric, kindly informing me that they have shut off my electricity. That and I owe them all of $120. Okay okay! If they really want their buck that badly, I’ll call them up and pay them. Ring ring, hmmmm, apparantly, credit cards cut into their profit margins too much, so that’s out.

Oh awesome! They take debit cards with a PLUS sign on the back! I got two of them right here, so that should work…

Oh wait, ones from Bank of America and Chase Manhattan aren’t acceptable. Of course! Can’t trust those tiny little banks.

Hmmm, I guess I’ll write them an echeck. Let’s see, check #679 sounds good… yeah! If I can just locate one of those in my pitch black room and read them my account number…

Wait a second, I haven’t used a check in like 5 years.

Oh oh, I know! I’ll use my laptop to go online and find it from online banking!! Huh, what? Oh … right, my cable modem doesn’t have power. I guess I’ll take care of it tomorrow.

To be honest, it was actually quite relaxing to sit around in the dark. There was a lot of stuff going on at work and opera and I hadn’t slept for about 36 hours. Yet, at that particular moment, I couldn’t think of anything that needed to be done. It felt extremely peaceful just to sit there, completely unstressed. It occured to me that with my $100k or so in the bank, I could sit there for a really really long time while my $868/month of rent gets paid automatically. I didn’t really have to do anything at all.

My other thought was whether I could live without electricity at home for a long period of time. While that sounds kind of ridiculous in the modern age, it really doesn’t seem that bad. There is a computer and internet connection at work, so any kind of computer related need is covered. It’s not like it matters whether I am writing an article from home or from work. Food wise, I order out all the time anyway, so I just need to not eat stuff that requires a microwave. That sounded horrible yesterday, but now that I think about it, it sure seems like a much healthier diet.

It actually doesn’t sound that hard or unhealthy to live without electricity at home. I can sleep when it’s dark and wake up when there is light. In the mornings, I’ll have some time to get some wake up exercise done before going to work. At night, I’ll have time to reflect on the day’s events and refocus myself. There are no clocks to tell me it’s time to do something, no instant messages with people who’d like to talk, and no list of stuff that I need to do. My home becomes a sanctuary where I can think about what I want in peace with no distractions. For the first time in years, I am going to sleep without the whirling of a computer fan/disk in the background.

Aside from the occassional important thing I need to look up online during the weekends, this doesn’t sound like a bad lifestyle at all. I think I might try keeping everything off during the weekdays when the power does come back on.

Another interesting thing I noticed while showering is that it felt perfectly natural when I kept my eyes open, even though I couldn’t see anything. However, it felt really weird, like I was going to stumble, when I closed my eyes. That’s a mystery to be solved another day though!

Discovery Of Electricity

The discovery of electricity is a story that spans centuries, with many important figures contributing to our understanding of this powerful force.

It all began in ancient times, with the Greeks and Romans experimenting with static electricity by rubbing different materials together. They observed that certain materials, such as amber, would become charged and attract nearby objects.

In the 1600s, English scientist William Gilbert conducted extensive research on electricity and magnetism, and coined the term "electricus," meaning "like amber." He also discovered that many materials, not just amber, could become charged.

In the 1700s, several scientists made significant advancements in the understanding of electricity. Benjamin Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment, proving that lightning was a form of electricity. He also invented the lightning rod, which protected buildings from lightning strikes.

In the 1800s, scientists such as Alessandro Volta and Michael Faraday made even more strides in our understanding of electricity. Volta created the first battery, while Faraday discovered the principle of electromagnetic induction, which is the basis for the operation of generators and motors.

As the years went on, scientists continued to make advancements in our understanding of electricity. The invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879 changed the world forever, making electric light a practical reality for the first time.

Throughout the years, many people have contributed to our understanding of electricity, and it is a story of curiosity, experimentation and perseverance. Today we are able to enjoy the convenience and comfort that electricity has brought to our lives, but it all started with a spark of curiosity and a desire to understand the world around us.

Imagine a day without electricity. No electricity, no light bulb, no fan, no air conditioner, no access to any electrical appliance, it seems horrible right? We all know that electricity is an essential part of our daily life. Electricity has made our life very comfortable. Without electricity it is impossible to have a smooth lifestyle. Even the article you are reading right now would not have been possible without electricity.

We are completely dependent on electricity for our daily work, weather it is household work like washing or your daily job like working on a computer. From houses to factories to offices and hospitals electricity is required everywhere.

If there’s  a power cut for even one day it will be a massive problem. Factories and industrial work will stop. Production and many other things will stop. We will have to work under the candle light and no fans and air conditioner in summers. It’s hard to imagine to live without electricity for even one day isn’t it? In other words world runs on electricity but think about the people in many of the rural areas who don’t have access to electricity yet and areas where electricity is provided for few hours. Life must be very tough there, No access to any electrical appliances, not even a light bulb or fan.

Differences in urban and rural life due to electricity

In cities and urban areas life is very easy and comfortable as compared to rural areas. Urban areas are provided with twenty four hours of electricity. One can easily wash clothes in washing machine, can get cold water from refrigerator, use laptops and mobile phones, everything on the snap of their finger. But on the other hand life is tough in rural areas because of limited or no supply of electricity. A huge gap is created between urban areas and rural areas because of electricity.

In rural areas life is very difficult as they aren’t able to use several electrical gadgets because of the power cuts and very limited supply of electricity. Because of no electricity access to water is also difficult in rural areas. In current situation because of covid all the educational institute are running online but students in rural areas find it very difficult to attend the classes due to lack of electricity.

Years of struggling has made people in rural areas use to live without electricity. They don’t have any worries regarding to electricity because they are habitual of living without it, but what about urban areas? Forget about one day it’s difficult for people to live without electricity even for few hours. Urban life is so much dependent on electricity.

If we go hundred years back in past when there was no electricity in country. We think that life would have been difficult at that time but no, life was just as smooth as it is now. People were habitual of doing all their work without electricity. Introduction of electricity made their life more easy and it kept on making it easier and comfortable but don’t you think it has spoiled us? Humans are so much dependent on electricity that living without electricity for even one day is tough.

Dependence of humans on electrical appliances

World has become very advanced in technology but none of them will work without electricity. Nowadays everything runs online on our phones but without electricity phones can’t be used. In urban areas access of water is difficult if there’s a power cut. We need electrical appliances for all our works for example washing machine for washing clothes, laptops and mobile phones, light bulbs, fans, television, heaters and the list goes on. We are completely dependent on electrical appliances nowadays.

Overall we can say that electricity has became an essential part of our daily life just like water and air. World has become full of advanced technology but all the technologies run on electricity. From households to industries electricity is required everywhere. Electricity is so important but still there are rural areas where there is no electricity or very limited supply of electricity.

On the other hand urban areas are provided with 24 hours of electricity making the life of people living in urban areas very easy and comfortable as compared to areas but at the same time creating a huge gap in between. Humans are dependent on electrical appliances for almost all the works which somewhat spoiled us. Life will turn very hard if there will be no electricity so we should save electricity for our future.

We Can Get the Electricity We Need Without Frying the Planet (or Our Pocketbooks)

Electric utilities from Georgia to Wisconsin to Virginia are predicting a dizzying surge in power demand from new industrial facilities, electric vehicles and, most of all, the data centers that store our digital photos and will enable large-language models for artificial intelligence. For months now, they have been signaling that they won’t be able to keep up.

To keep the lights on, many utility companies are proposing to build dozens of new power plants that burn natural gas. North Carolina-based Duke Energy alone wants to add 8.9 gigawatts of new gas-fired capacity — more than the entire country added in 2023. Using their own projections of soaring energy demands as justification, these companies are also pushing back on the climate targets set by their states and the Biden administration.

If state regulators sign off on these plans, they will be gambling with our country’s future. We need to electrify everything from cars to appliances to slow climate change, but we won’t be able to reach our climate goals if we power all of those machines with dirty energy.

There is a better way. But to get there, legislators will need to overhaul the incentives driving utilities to double down on natural gas, so that they can turn a profit without cooking the planet.

Companies like Duke, Dominion Energy and Georgia Power argue that they need more gas-fired plants to reliably provide power during times of peak demand — for instance, on a hot summer weekday afternoon when home cooling systems and data servers are all humming at maximum output, and the grid strains to keep up. But those peaks tend to materialize only for a few dozen hours per year, and there are ways to deal with them that don’t require a massive amount of new methane-burning infrastructure.

The real reason the utilities want to build these plants is quite simple: The more stuff they build, the more money they make. Regulators let utilities charge their customers enough money to cover what they spend on assets like combustion turbines and wires, plus a generous rate of return (up to 10 percent) for their investors. This longstanding arrangement incentivizes power providers to build expensive things whether society needs them or not, in lieu of lower-cost, cleaner options, and to invoke their duty to keep the lights on as a post hoc rationalization.

This dynamic can push some companies to extreme lengths in pursuit of gas-generated profits. Nearly a decade ago, Dominion and Duke partnered to build a 600-mile-long pipeline across West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina, largely to supply their own new power plants. Back then, the companies cited their own forecasts of rising energy demand and claimed more gas supply was needed to back up intermittent wind- and solar-generated power coming onto the grid. But it soon became clear that there wasn’t any need for those plants, and most were canceled. The pipeline’s core premise had proved to be a mirage. And in 2020 , faced with relentless grass-roots opposition, Dominion and Duke finally abandoned it.

It makes sense that Dominion and Duke executives would pursue these potentially lucrative investments; their job is to maximize returns for their shareholders. But utilities aren’t like other shareholder-owned companies. They are granted the right to be monopolies in exchange for providing essential services to society. And regulators’ job is to hold them accountable to the public interest. This century-old model is in dire need of an upgrade, so that utilities can be compensated for achieving goals — such as using clean, affordable energy and building a resilient grid — that are in everyone’s interest.

Although breathless forecasts of artificial intelligence gobbling up all of our power supply may or may not prove correct, there’s no question that after decades of remaining mostly flat, electricity demand is increasing. Fortunately, utilities have plenty of ways to meet this new need.

They include “ virtual power plants ” — when technologies such as home batteries, rooftop solar systems, smart water heaters and thermostats are linked together and managed via software to provide the same services as a conventional power plant. Utilities in Vermont, Colorado and Massachusetts are already using them, to quickly respond to rising demand at a much lower cost than operating natural gas combustion turbines. According to one estimate , virtual power plants could lower U.S. utilities’ costs by as much as $35 billion over the next decade.

Utilities could also accelerate efforts to replace outdated transmission lines with newer ones that can carry double the electric current and to bring more battery storage online. They can compensate customers for using less energy during times when demand is high and invest far more in energy efficiency, helping customers to adopt devices that use less electricity.

All of these solutions would save customers money and reduce carbon emissions. They could, according to a Department of Energy analysis , meet the entire projected growth in U.S. peak electricity demand over the next decade.

Sure, they wouldn’t provide utilities nearly as much money as building new gas-fired power plants. But that’s why public utility commissions must step in to require utilities to make investments that benefit the climate and their customers, without scaring off their shareholders. What’s needed is not more regulation, just smarter regulation.

There are promising signs that this shift is already underway. In Connecticut, where customers pay some of the highest electricity rates in the nation, the chairwoman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority has created a program to test-drive tweaks to utilities’ incentive structure, as part of a larger initiative to build an “equitable, modern electric grid.”

More than a dozen other state legislatures have directed regulators to impose or study some kind of performance-based regulation to reward utilities based on what they do , instead of on how much they spend . This move has predictably elicited pushback from some companies, which believe that their traditional business models are under threat. But others have embraced the new opportunities: Hawaii’s approach has earned the support of the state’s biggest electric utility.

We need utilities to succeed now more than ever before. But the definition of success needs to evolve. We need them not only to shore up a grid being battered by extreme weather and wildfires fueled by climate change, but also to fully embrace the work of phasing out fossil fuels.

The United States has very little chance of reining in its emissions without investor-owned utilities putting their expertise and deep resources to work. We can’t build a carbon-free energy system without them — or without regulators and lawmakers willing to compel them to accelerate, rather than postpone, the clean energy transition.

June 6, 1944: a day that changed the world.

The images of D-Day are compelling: grainy black-and-white photos of soldiers on the beaches of Normandy, France, give us an idea of the pitched battle they fought, and the photos evoke “the fog of war.” We get a glimpse of the seemingly insurmountable task they faced (we can also gain more insight from objects in our National Museum of American History collections ). 

On June 6, 1944, the biggest military seaborne invasion in history occurred, and it was brutal; Operation Neptune saw the landing of the troops on the beaches of Normandy. These beaches were hard won; the German defenses were formidable and the hazards numerous. Soldiers drowned before they reached the beach. Transport boats killed and injured troops. Mines were embedded in the beaches. Machine guns relentlessly fired upon the troops. 

The Allied forces did not meet their objectives on the first day of Operation Overlord, the code name for the Battle of Normandy (June 6, 1944–Aug. 30, 1944). Allied casualties on June 6 have been estimated at 10,000 killed, wounded, and missing in action: 6,603 Americans; 2,700 British; and 946 Canadians. French civilian casualties that day were estimated at 3,000.

Yet the Allies prevailed. The troops fought their way from the beaches onward to the eventual liberation of France on August 30, 1944, after more battles and perseverance. 

The 80th anniversary of D-Day is an opportunity to remember the importance of what was achieved and to acknowledge those who fought the battles, who served and sacrificed, and, most profoundly, those who gave all. The success of the Allied forces in France and in all the theaters of World War II changed the world.

Frank Blazich, Ph.D. , Curator of Military History at the National Museum of American History, discusses the impact and meaning of the day:

The invasion of German-occupied Western Europe is one of the rare moments in history when the world changed. In the aftermath of the invasion and battle, America would thereafter find itself in a position of global dominance and leadership until the surrender of the Nazi Germany and into the Cold War. Without D-Day, the total defeat of Nazi Germany and return of democracy to Western Europe could not be envisioned as inevitable. The forces of the Soviet Union destroyed Nazi offensive capabilities and Hitler’s ambitions for future conquest. But Germany’s defensive abilities continued to inflict losses on the Red Army, and Allied bombing had blunted but not destroyed the Nazi war industries. Joseph Stalin, having carried the burden of the fight with Nazism since 1941, advocated repeatedly for a second front to destroy any future threat to the Soviet Union. If Germany, however, could prevent a two-front war, it had a theoretical chance to force a negotiated settlement with Stalin, thereby freeing all remaining German forces to thwart further military actions by the West and further consolidate its grip on its conquered lands. Through D-Day, the forces of the western democracies returned to the European continent and commenced the ultimate destruction of the Third Reich. From this one day in June 1944, Americans stepped foot on French soil and what would become the latter half of the 20th century and the foundation of the international world that exists to this present day.

West Springfield police block off street, power outage reported

Power outage reported

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A number of Eversource customers in the area of Oleander Street are without power this afternoon after a large tree fell down on some wires.

Sgt. Joe LaFrance with the West Springfield Police Department told Western Mass News officers blocked off the road while utility crews worked on scene.

We’re told the call came in at 11:53 a.m. Monday, on Memorial Day. This happened at the intersection of Elm St. and Oleander St.

Eversource crews worked to clear out the large tree and make the necessary repairs.

As of about 4:00 p.m. just over 20 customers remained without power.

However, at the height of the outage when the tree initially came down there were close to 800 customers without power. This was according to the MEMA Power Outages map .

Eversource reported they anticipated power to be restored at around 6:45 p.m. Monday to those still affected.

No injuries were reported in this incident.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.
