How to Find and Cancel Unwanted Online Subscriptions

These tips will help you end services you no longer need

Tired of paying for online subscriptions you no longer use but can’t quite figure out how to cancel? You’re not alone.

Streaming platforms like Netflix, cloud storage services like iCloud, and newspaper and music subscriptions often make it difficult to find the cancel function on their app or website. It’s also easy to simply forget about digital subscriptions you signed up for, especially ones started as free trials. Months can go by before you realize the provider is charging your credit card.

But it could soon be easier to end unwanted subscriptions. Last year the Federal Trade Commission proposed a “click-to-cancel” provision that would require companies to let you cancel subscriptions as easily as you were able to sign up. In the meantime, we have tips to help you find and then hit “cancel” quickly now.

1. Identify Your Subscriptions Check your credit card statements from the last year for recurring payments, says Tiffany Aliche, a financial educator and author. One easy way to do this is to use a subscription tracking tool, such as Rocket Money or OneMain Trim, which finds and then helps you cancel subscriptions you no longer want. (Caveat: You may need to grant these tools limited access to your accounts, so read their privacy policies carefully.)

2. Opt Out of Apps To see a list of the apps you’re currently paying for through Apple Pay, open the App Store on your smartphone and click on “Account,” then “Subscriptions.” From there, you can click “cancel” on those you no longer want. (The steps are similar for the Google Play store.) For canceling other subscriptions, search Google for step-by-step instructions (e.g., “how to cancel a Netflix subscription”).

3. Keep Track of Discounted or Free Trial Periods When you hit “cancel” on a subscription, it’s common for services to offer you a “don’t go!” free extension or discount for a limited amount of time. If you decide to take them up on it, set a calendar alert for two or three days before the end date of the promotion to remind you to take action. The same goes for any free trial subscriptions you may sign up for. Alerts will help you juggle multiple trials at a time.

Head to NOW Membership , hit Cancel membership  next to the one you don’t want any more, then follow the onscreen steps. (We recommend using a desktop, laptop or tablet to do this rather than a mobile.)

Once your membership is cancelled you’ll see a confirmation message, and get a confirmation email within 3 hours. You’ll be able to keep watching until the date your next payment was due (unless you're on a minimum-term plan – see the FAQ below for details).

Are you an EE TV customer?

Paying for your NOW Membership through EE TV? You'll need to cancel through them, too.

If your membership is part of a EE TV package, give them a call to find out more about how to cancel it or change your package. 

If you have a bolt-on membership on top of your package, it will automatically renew from month to month. If you don't want it to continue, you can cancel it in your EE TV account , or by contacting them.

Subscribing to NOW via Apple, Amazon or TalkTalk?

Do you pay for your NOW Membership via Apple? You'll need to cancel through them, too. Visit the Apple support site for more info on how to cancel .

If you're paying for your membership through Amazon, head to the Memberships & Subscriptions area of your Amazon account to cancel.

If you're with TalkTalk, you'll need to cancel any membership that's part of your package in  your TalkTalk account , or by contacting  TalkTalk customer service .

Can I cancel through my NOW Smart Stick or another device?

No – you can only cancel here on our website in My Account . The cancel option isn't available in the NOW app.

How do I cancel my minimum-term plan?

We sometimes offer minimum-term plans that give you significant savings on the regular cost of membership in return for signing up for a minimum term of several months.

During your minimum term, you're free to cancel by going to My Account  as usual, but your cancellation won't take effect until the end of your minimum term . Any remaining monthly payments will be taken as normal and you can continue watching right up until the last day of your plan, when your membership will end. Don't forget, if you're on a minimum-term plan for more than one membership you'll need to cancel each one separately.

If you don't cancel your minimum-term plan before it ends, your membership will roll on at the regular price.

Can I cancel a Sports Day Membership?

You can only cancel a Sports Day Membership that has been bought in the last 14 days and not activated. To cancel a Sports Day Membership, you’ll need to chat to one of our advisors. Just select the  Get in touch  button on this page.

What if I want to cancel more than one of the membership options on my account?

If you have more than one membership card on your account, you’ll need to cancel each of them individually.

Why can't I see the membership I want to cancel on my account?

This is most likely because you have more than one NOW account. You’ll need to sign in to each account to cancel any memberships you no longer want to use.

Will my NOW Boost renew automatically each month, like my membership?

That depends on what type of membership you’ve got.

As long as you’ve got an active monthly membership, your NOW Boost will renew automatically each month unless you cancel it. You can cancel at any time in exactly the same way as you’d cancel your membership, by going to NOW Membership .

If you’ve only got a Sports Day Membership on your account, your Boost will only run for one month, and won’t auto renew – so you don’t need to remember to cancel it.

If you cancel your last membership (unless it’s one you pay for through a third party, like Apple or Amazon), we’ll automatically cancel your Boost for you as well.
