Here you will find an example of an IELTS  animal testing essay .

In this essay, you are asked to discuss the arguments  for  and  against  animal testing, and then give  your own conclusions  on the issue.

This means you must look at both sides of the issue and you must also be sure you give your opinion too.

The essay is similar to an essay that says " Discuss both opinions and then give your opinion " but it is worded differently.

Take a look at the question and model answer below, and think about how the essay has been organised and how it achieves coherence and cohesion.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Examine the arguments in favour of and against animal experiments, and come to a conclusion on this issue.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Animals Testing Essay - Model Answer

Issues related to animal experimentation are frequently discussed these days, particularly in the media. It is often said that animals should not be used in testing because it is cruel and unnecessary. This essay will examine the arguments for and against animal testing. 

On the one hand, the people who support these experiments say that we must do tests on animals. For instance, many famous lifesaving drugs were invented in this way, and animal experiments may help us to find more cures in the future. Indeed, possibly even a cure for cancer and AIDS. Furthermore, the animals which are used are not usually wild but are bred especially for experiments. Therefore, they believe it is not true that animal experiments are responsible for reducing the number of wild animals on the planet. 

On the other hand, others feel that there are good arguments against this. First and foremost, animal experiments are unkind and cause animals a lot of pain. In addition, they feel that many tests are not really important, and in fact animals are not only used to test new medicines but also new cosmetics, which could be tested on humans instead. Another issue is that sometimes an experiment on animals gives us the wrong result because animals’ bodies are not exactly the same as our own. As a consequence, this testing may not be providing the safety that its proponents claim.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion, on balance, that the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages, and testing on animals should not continue. Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this.

It fully answers all parts of the task - explaining the arguments ' for ' in the first paragraph and the arguments ' against ' in the next. Conclusions are then drawn with the writer giving their opinion in the conclusion.

It is thus very clearly organised, with each body paragraph having a central idea .

Ideas are also extended and supported by the use of reasons and some examples or further clarification. No ideas are left unclear or unexplained.

There is also some good topic related vocabulary in the animal testing essay such as 'life saving drugs ' and 'bred ' and a mix of complex sentences , such as adverbial clauses :

'Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this'.

Noun clauses :

'...they feel that many tests are not really important'.

And relative clauses :

'...the animals which are used are not usually wild... '

Transitions are also used effectively to ensure there is good coherence and cohesion . For example, ' On the other hand.. ' indicates a change to discuss the contrasting ideas, and ' Therefore... " and ' As a consequence..' are used to give results.

IELTS animal testing essay: Some people think that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefits of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong.

Over centuries humans have experimented with many different chemicals, products, and processes, with the final aim of bettering our conditions. Testing products on animals most likely dates back centuries, however, in modern society it is a controversial point. Below is an outline of circumstances when it could be considered acceptable and unacceptable.

Firstly, it is clear that major advances in fighting disease, viruses and illnesses would not have been made without testing products on animals. This is because it is inhumane to test the products on healthy human beings, likewise using computer modelling to predict reactions is only a recent possibility and still not as reliable as testing on animals. Therefore without experiments on animals, breakthroughs in medicine would have been impossible, and most would agree the price paid has been worth it.

Conversely, it could be argued that medical research carried out for mere cosmetic ends is undoubtedly not worth the lives of innocent animals. This is largely for two reasons, firstly a large body of research is said to have been built up previously from past experiments, and secondly there are alternatives such as dermatological testing or using natural ingredients.

For example, retail chains such as Lush and The Body Shop have both made fortunes by positioning themselves as natural solutions against animal testing. Therefore due to the end rationale for testing on animals, and the alternatives available, it is clear it is completely unjustifiable in this situation.

To conclude animal welfare can be side-stepped when the situation is threatening humans and computer alternatives are simply too premature. Nevertheless, when the research has rather fickle motives and viable alternatives do exist, in these cases the loss of animal's lives in inexcusable.

Task 2 Essay: Animal Testing

Question: Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favour of them because of their benefits to humanity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) Opinions are divided on whether a complete ban should be imposed on animal testing on moral grounds or whether it should be maintained due to its roles in the development of new therapeutic agents or testing potentially dangerous products. This essay will discuss both views and give reasons why such a ban would be not sensible given the current lack of a realistic alternative.

(Body 1) Those who argue that experiments on animals should be prohibited may point to the suffering they experience. Animal rights activists believe that such testing would do nothing but cause harm and distress to animal subjects, which cannot be justified by any possible benefits to society. A good illustration of this is allergy skin testing in which rabbits can be subject to severe swelling and inflammation. This exploitation by the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, nevertheless, could be mitigated by implementing a set of ethical principles, including refining experimental procedures to minimise any possible discomfort that animals have to experience.

(Body 2) Despite the aforementioned arguments, I am in favour of animal research partly because of the concrete evidence it offers and partly because of a lack of alternatives. With regard to the former, these studies provide information on the effectiveness and safety profile of a candidate drug, serving as a foundation for its trials on human subjects. Such data can assist scientists in calculating the dose which should be used for patients. As far as the second idea is concerned, although some advances in computer modelling have been made, these options still have not demonstrated enough reliability and therefore, studies conducted on live animals are still irreplaceable, for now at least.

(Conclusion) To summarise, I believe that the use of animals for drug and product testing, although causing intense suffering to the subjects, is essential and incomparable. However greater investment in computer modelling is needed for the long term. (312 words).

Model Answer :

According to a section of the society, the use of animals in experiments is justified if it facilitates humans in finding cures for diseases. However, there are others who are strongly against animal experiments. While, as for me, I tend towards the experiment that animal testing is wrong morally; still, I tend to support a limited amount of animal experimentation for the development of medicines.

There are specific reasons why people are against animal testing. Firstly, they consider is as morally wrong to harm animals and make them suffer during drug testing. Moreover, they also feel that animals have the right to live freely without being suffered to human torture. For example, rats in labs are injected with medicine to observe the effects of the medicine before it is declared safe for human consumption. Therefore, supporter of animal rights consider it as a criminal act. However, I am certain that if any of their close family members were suffering and needed a tested drug, they would feel differently about the issue.

On the other hand, advocates of animal experiments strongly feel that the benefits of testing medicines on animal far outweigh the moral obligations. The population of rodents which are the main animals used in lab tests, multiplies very quickly, so the chance of these species becoming extinct due to overuse in experiments is very low. Moreover, some very effective cures have been discovered as a result of testing on animals, due to which the suffering of many patients was ended. However, I agree with the banning of animal testing for non-medical purposes but I feel that it may be a necessary end when medicines and medical procedures are concerned.

After having discussed the most pertinent points of the issue, it seems that it would be wrong to completely ban animal testing since it provides good results for the benefit of human kind.

In the IELTS writing exam, you could be asked to write an essay about animals. Most likely, your question would relate to animal rights . This might seem challenging for some people, so I have written this article to help you understand it better.

Animal Rights and IELTS

For IELTS writing, you often have to discuss ethical issues. Thus, for the topic of animals, you would most likely have to write about animal rights. This could include:

• whether it is ethical to keep animals in a zoo
• discussing animal experimentation
• the ethics of eating meat
• whether humans should keep pets

Because IELTS requires no specialist knowledge, you would probably not have anything more specific than this to discuss. For example, you wouldn’t be asked about the ethics of purebred pet ownership because most people don’t know much about it. You would also not be given anything that is extremely controversial.

Therefore, the most common animal topics will be quite general and relate to animal rights.

Animal Rights Essay – Experimentation

Here is the question that we will examine today:

Some people argue that all experimentation on animals is bad and should be outlawed. However, others believe that important scientific discoveries can be made from animal experiments. Can experimentation on animals be justified? Are there any alternatives?

Note that there are many variants upon this topic. I have seen this same idea with “ Discuss both views ” and “ To what extent do you agree/disagree ” question types.

This one, of course, is a two-part question . Therefore, don’t waste too much time reading the long part above the questions. Regardless of what that says, your task is to:

• Say whether or not experiments on animals can be justified.
• Say whether there are alternatives to this practice.

Be aware that your answer to the first question cannot negate having to answer the second. Whether you say that animal testing can or can’t be justified, you still have to say whether there are alternatives.

Language for an Animal Rights Essay

If you need to write an essay on animal rights, you need to know some appropriate language. Again, you do not need to be an expert, but you should have enough of a grasp of English to say something intelligent about the topic.

You may have noticed that I’ve used these expressions in this article:

• Animal experimentation
• Experiments on animals
• Animal testing

These all mean the same thing but it can be useful to employ different ways to do that, so that you don’t just repeat yourself.

Of course, what you say will also depend hugely on your position and your ideas. If you think that animal experimentation is wrong, then you’ll probably incorporate some rather negative language, such as:

• Impossible to justify

On the other hand, if you support animal testing, you might say something more positive:

It is also good to know some specific language related to the topic:

• Medical testing
• Subjected to

You can learn more language by reading articles on this topic. Try searching Google for “animal rights” or “animal testing.” You’ll find lots of articles. Just make sure that it is written by a native speaker or a professional writer. Also, be aware that with a contentious topic there will probably be a lot of passionate language and maybe even some misinformation.

Planning your Answer

First of all, you need to figure out what your position is in regards the question(s). Then, you need to think about how to explain your position in a straightforward way.

Here, we had two questions. Both of them are yes/no questions but of course you need to develop those ideas with explanations. Think of your answer as “Yes because…” or “No because…” This will help you to think of reasons that you can then incorporate into your answers.

Also, be aware that two-part questions are really easy to structure! You can just devote one body paragraph to each question:

My position is that animal experimentation cannot be justified, so I will explain that in my first body paragraph. I will start with the main argument in defence of animal testing, then refute it comprehensively.

For the next question, I will state that I don’t really know whether or not there are any alternatives. Thus, my structure will be:

Sample Band 9 Answer

Over the past few decades, animal testing has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of science. This essay will explain why it cannot be justified and that alternatives need to be sought.

The people who believe that animal testing is necessary tend to say that there are serious benefits to humanity, such as testing medicines before using them on human beings. They believe that this will help to figure out the cures to many serious illnesses, which will make the world a better place for humans. However, this is wrong for several reasons. Chief among them is the fact that animal testing is not as helpful in developing medicines as people think. Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans, and vice versa. As such, these trials are not just unnecessary but also profoundly unhelpful. For example, if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem, they may find that there are twelve drugs that do not work on the mouse. However, maybe one of those drugs would have worked on a human. As such, animal testing would have caused more problems than it solved.

Part of the reason for animal testing is that there are not many alternatives. Whilst it is obviously cruel and pointless to subject animals to experiments, most people would agree that it is worse to do this to human beings. However, there needs to be some sort of procedure by which testing can move from theoretical to human trials without the need for the evils of animal testing. What this process would be remains to be seen, but it is essential for any humane society.

In conclusion, people may argue that there are benefits that come from experimenting on animals, but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this. Scientists need to immediately seek an alternative and end this barbaric and pointless practice. 

Notes on the Answer

This was a good answer because it gave fully developed explanations and used language accurately. Here are some words and phrases from the answer:

• fiercely debated
• ethical problems
• profoundly unhelpful
• cruel and pointless
• theoretical
• humane society

Paragraph two was also quite interesting. I felt that the most convincing way to make my point was to show conventional logic and then comprehensively debunk it. To do so, I gave a clear example and demonstrated through a simple explanation of just why animal testing is so useless.

The Morning

Trump’s criminal trial, explained.

Figures from Donald Trump’s past have sworn an oath that could threaten his future.

Stormy Daniels was on the witness stand, Donald Trump was at the defense table and I could feel a queasy energy flow through the Manhattan courtroom. Daniels, an adult film star, told jurors about having sex with Trump in 2006. The former president radiated disgust, shaking his head and muttering obscenities.

I’ve been in the courtroom every day, and in today’s newsletter I want to share a bit about what it’s like to watch this spectacle unfold in person. This is the third of Trump’s trials that I’ve covered, but there’s still something striking about seeing a ubiquitous media figure in the flesh. He strides into the courtroom just before proceedings begin each morning: a real, heavily made-up person who directs grimaces, glowers and occasionally winks toward the reporters. His face falls when he thinks he is not being observed. And sometimes, when he stands up from the defense table, I can see him ready himself to face the press — jutting out his jaw before turning toward our seats.

Trump is not on trial for sleeping with Daniels, which he denies, or for paying her to keep silent. He is charged with something significantly less provocative: 34 counts of falsifying business records. Pundits have lamented the quotidian nature of the case — the only jury trial he may face before the election — given the monumental misdeeds of which he is accused elsewhere, including efforts to overturn election results. But the Manhattan district attorney says that his case, too, is about manipulating an election — the 2016 race. Prosecutors here are trying to convince jurors that Trump did something illegal by authorizing the hush-money payment and then seeking to conceal it once he was elected.

Even though it’s a documents case, the trial has thrummed with high-octane moments like his face-off with Daniels. Each time the prosecution calls a witness, rows of onlookers watch a figure from Trump’s past swear an oath that could threaten his future.

The big show

Prosecutors have called 19 witnesses to bring their story to life. They say that after Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels to be quiet, the president and his associates concocted 34 business documents, supposedly for legal services, that actually repaid Cohen for the hush money.

Each witness performed differently on the stand.

David Pecker, the mustachioed ex-publisher of The National Enquirer, delivered damning testimony in a mild tone against a man he said he still considered a friend. At the campaign’s behest, he said, he paid other accusers not to tell their stories about Trump. Reporters nicknamed him the tabloid grandfather, for his apparently kindly manner, even as he told ruthless stories about tarring Trump’s political enemies with mocking headlines.

Daniels entered the courtroom in a long black cloak with a hood. Her testimony was riveting. She appeared nervous at first as she recalled an encounter she says she had with Trump in a Nevada hotel room. But when Trump’s lawyer rose to question her, Daniels sat up straighter and fought back. “You have a lot of experience in making phony stories about sex appear to be real,” the defense lawyer said. Daniels shot back: “The sex in the films, it’s very much real. Just like what happened to me in that room.”

Cohen, who took the stand on Monday and was still testifying yesterday, is the prosecution’s most important witness. Only he ties Trump directly to the alleged crime. On two occasions, he said, Trump acknowledged of the scheme to disguise reimbursements for the hush money. Cohen’s tale is a parable of loyalty and betrayal: He says that he turned on the former president after Trump failed to support him in 2018, when federal prosecutors originally began investigating the hush-money payment.

It’s jarring for these creatures of the attention-seeking worlds of reality television, supermarket tabloids and politics to be ensconced in a small courtroom where only a few dozen people can hear their testimony against the former president. The trial isn’t broadcast. So instead of creating a show for the cameras, their stories are enlivened by lawyers’ questioning, documentary evidence and reporters who feed their editors and producers from their laptops inside the room.

Initially, Trump pushed back on the proceedings, insulting Daniels and Cohen and suggesting the jurors were a bunch of biased Democrats. But the judge has forbidden Trump from talking about witnesses or jurors, fined him $10,000 for violating the order and threatened to send him to jail. Since then, in the courtroom, Trump has seemed diminished. Silence does not suit him. Seated at the defense table for hours on end, he has often shut his eyes, blocking out the courtroom where 12 New Yorkers will soon determine his future.

Trump’s lawyer aggressively questioned Cohen , trying to undermine his credibility by confronting him about his past lies.

The defense also accused Cohen of lying about a 2016 phone call in which he claimed to have spoken to Trump about the hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels. “I believe I spoke to Mr. Trump,” Cohen responded, remaining mostly unfazed.

The jury heard audio of Cohen celebrating Trump’s indictment on his podcast, saying he hoped Trump “rots inside.” Prosecutors repeatedly objected to the defense’s questions.

Several right-wing House Republicans were at the courthouse to support Trump . “Standing back and standing by, Mr. President,” Matt Gaetz wrote on social media, a reference to Trump’s 2020 remarks about the Proud Boys, who later stormed the Capitol.

On late night, Seth Meyers mocked the Republicans supporting Trump at his trial .

Trump plans to attend his son Barron’s high-school graduation today, and the trial will resume next week. The judge told lawyers to prepare to make closing arguments by Tuesday.

Supreme Court

An upside-down American flag, a protest symbol among Trump supporters, flew outside Justice Samuel Alito’s house as the court considered an election case days after Jan. 6, a Times investigation found.

In a 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court rejected a conservative challenge to how the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is funded, which could have gutted the agency’s regulations on mortgages and banking.

2024 Elections

President Biden used executive privilege to block House Republicans from getting recordings of his interview with prosecutors who investigated his handling of government documents. The move could also help shield his attorney general from House contempt charges.

Trump said he was open to letting Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent candidate, participate in presidential debates . Biden’s campaign opposes that.

Serbia approved a contract with Jared Kushner to build a luxury hotel in Belgrade. The deal puts Kushner in business with another country as his father-in-law runs for president.

Larry Hogan, Maryland’s Republican former governor, said he supported abortion rights and called himself “pro-choice,” a major pivot as he runs for Senate in the heavily Democratic state.

Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s wealthy running mate, gave their campaign another $8 million to get on state ballots.

Cobalt is necessary for electric-vehicle batteries, and Congo has a lot of it. The Biden administration is changing its policies to get more cobalt to the U.S., upsetting some activists.
