Doctor of Philosophy - PhD

Full-time, 3 years starts sep 2024.

Doctorate-level study is an opportunity to expand upon your interests and expertise in a community that really values research; and to make an original, positive contribution to learning in literature and related fields.

As the oldest department of English Literature in the UK, based in one of the largest and most diverse Schools in the University of Edinburgh, we are the ideal place for PhD study.

Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in all periods and genres of literature and literary analysis.

**Research excellence**

Based on our performance in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF), over 90 per cent of our research and impact is classed as world-leading and internationally excellent by Research Professional. 69 per cent is graded at the world-leading level – the highest of REF’s four categories.

In Times Higher Education's REF analysis, English at Edinburgh is ranked fifth in the UK (out of more than 90 institutions) for:

- the overall quality of our publications and other outputs

- the impact of our research on people’s lives

- our supportive research environment

Given the breadth and depth of our expertise, we are able to support students wishing to develop research projects in any field of Anglophone literary studies. These include American studies, literary and critical theory, the history of the book, gender and sexuality studies, and global Anglophone literatures - where our specialisms include Pacific, African, South Asian, and African-American writing.

We have particular strengths in each of the main periods of English and Scottish Literature:

- Renaissance/early modern

- Enlightenment

- Victorian

- Modernist

- 21st century

- Contemporary

Emergent research themes in the department include the digital humanities, the economic humanities, the environmental humanities and literature and medicine.

Working with colleagues elsewhere in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, and across the wider University, we are able to support PhD theses crossing boundaries between disciplines and/or languages.

Over the course of your PhD, you’ll be expected to complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of your supervisors leading to a dissertation of usually between 80,000 and 100,000 words.

You will be awarded your doctorate if your thesis is judged to be of an appropriate standard, and your research makes a definite contribution to knowledge.

**Go beyond the books**

Beyond the Books is a podcast from the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at research and the people who make it happen. Listen to a mix of PhD, early career and established researchers talk about their journey to and through academia and about their current and recent research.

A Masters by Research (MScR) programme is ideal if you have a clear idea of the independent research you wish to undertake at masters level. The programme is a good stepping stone to a PhD, but is equally of value as a stand-alone qualification.

As a Masters by Research student, you will be part of a wider masters community while specialising in what most interests you right from the beginning of the programme. This is how it is different to a taught Masters (MSc).

Our highly flexible programme enables you to complete an MScR degree through a combination of coursework and a final dissertation of 15,000 words.

Your coursework will take the form of two essays of 6,000 words on topics related to your research focus. You will also complete assignments in research skills and methods.

Course content.

It’s not every graduate who can claim to have earned a degree at the oldest department of English Literature in the world. We first offered courses on ‘rhetoric and belles lettres’ 250 years ago, and have been renowned as a vigorous centre of scholarship, teaching and learning ever since.

At the last Research Assessment Exercise, we were awarded the highest research rating possible, 5*A, making us one of the top three departments of English Literature in the UK.

We have one of the largest graduate offerings in English Literature in the country, with an expansive range of research possibilities. These include each of the main periods of English and Scottish Literature – Medieval, Renaissance/Early Modern, Enlightenment, Romantic, and the 19th and 20th centuries – along with all genres of literary analysis: literary and critical theory, literary history, the history of the book, cultural studies, gender studies, post-colonial literature and American studies. Scottish literature is particularly favoured: we are home to the Centre for Scottish Writing in the 19th Century.

English Literature houses the Centre for the History of the Book and is one of the UK's leading forces in this area. It works closely with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and with the National Library of Scotland. The latter's recently acquired Murray Archive is crucial for studies in Romanticism, Book History, Bibliography and Archive Studies.

Our interdisciplinary approach also encourages the development of research projects that span various subject areas across our School, the wider University and the cultural life of the city itself.

This masters programme is a fascinating exploration of the ways in which writing in English has shaped or mediated political identities in England, Scotland and Ireland.

It introduces you to the relationship between literary writing and political and social discourse in Britain and Ireland between the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688 and the end of the 19th century. This is the period of the creation of the Britain in which we live today, and also the time in which ancient British, Scottish and Irish national cultures were conceptualised as a response to radical literary, social and political innovations.

In examining the role of literary writing in this period, you will evaluate the ways in which it changed in response to social and political developments.

This programme will help you to identify possible topics for advanced research in English literature, potentially leading to an academic career. The transferable skills you gain, such as communication, project management and analysis, will give you an edge in a competitive employment market.

Lady Louise Windsor competing in The Coaching Marathon during the 2023 Royal Windsor Horse Show

Why Lady Louise won't graduate after third year of university

The duke and duchess of edinburgh's daughter is studying english literature….

Isabelle Casey

Lady Louise, 20, is likely enjoying the remainder of her summer holidays at Balmoral with her royal family members while preparing to enter her third year at St Andrews University.

For UK students, this would usually mean she is entering her final year where, as an English Literature undergrad, she would have a series of final exams and have to submit her dissertation. However, Louise will not be graduating this academic year.

As she attends a university in Scotland, Louise, like her fellow students, will complete a four-year course to obtain her degree, unlike in England.

Sallies Hall exterior with lawn

The official university website states: "Our undergraduate degrees, like those at other Scottish universities, are usually studied full-time over four years.

"The first two years (also known as ‘sub-honours’) allow you to gain a broad understanding of the subject you applied to study at St Andrews, as well as other courses of interest to you.

"The final two years (also known as 'Honours') provide the opportunity to specialize in your chosen subject or subjects."

Regarding her plans after university, it was recently revealed that, alongside her studies, Louise is undergoing Reserve Officer training, which will prepare her for a military career after graduation, according to The Sun.

LISTEN: A Right Royal Podcast

Louise, who is 16th in line to the throne, states on her LinkedIn page: "I am interested in pursuing a career in the military, diplomacy, or law."

The young royal is set to be the first to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, who had an unwavering sense of loyalty to the Armed Forces and a very close relationship with Louise.

Princess Elizabeth changing the tire of a vehicle as she trains at as ATS Officer during World War Two, at the ATS training centre in 1945

As for whether Louise will have royal duties in her future, Duchess Sophie previously said of her daughter: "We try to bring them up with the understanding that they are very likely to have to work for a living. Hence, we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it's highly unlikely."

This could change due to the ongoing health issues of senior members of the royal family. Prince William, Louise's cousin and future King, may call on her and his other cousins just as the Queen did during her reign.

You may also like

Our royal correspondent, Danielle Stacey, weighed in: "Lady Louise Windsor is carving out her own career, but she may be one of the cousins the Prince of Wales turns to when he becomes King. While it’s not known if she wants to become a full-time working royal like her parents, Lady Louise could represent the monarchy or attend engagements on behalf of William in the future.

"The late Queen Elizabeth II had the support of her cousins—the Kents, the Gloucesters, and Princess Alexandra—throughout her reign, and if William follows suit, it would allow the monarchy to reach more people and support more causes."

3 in 7 applicants to this programme received an offer.

Data shown above is for entry in academic year 2020/21 (sources) .

Previous Years

Data sources.

  • FOI Request by Mr Burano. September 2015.
  • FOI Request by Taza. October 2017.
  • FOI Request by Beilei Xiang. January 2019.
  • FOI Request by Erina Nishii. August 2021.

The acceptance rate , or offer rate, represents the fraction of applicants who received an offer. Note that this will be generally lower the acceptances rates (acceptances divided by applicants) published by many other sources. This article explains it in more detail. The acceptances generally indicate the number of offer holders who accepted the offer and fulfilled its conditions. For some universities, however, it denotes the number of applicants who accepted the offer, regardless of whether they subsequently met its conditions.

Data Reliability

Unless otherwise noted, the data presented comes from the universities and is generally reliable. However, some of the differences between years and/or courses may be due to different counting methodologies or data gathering errors. This may especially be the case if there is a sharp difference from year to year. If the data does not look right, click the "Report" button located near the top of the page.

Writing your PhD: Reviewing the Literature

This course is intended for PhD students in their second year.

Course Content and Unit Aims

Criteria for success, purpose, and citation skills

  • To explore the criteria for a successful literature review, as proposed by the literature and by University of Edinburgh academics.
  • To discuss the purposes of a literature review.
  • To raise awareness of citation practices, including direct quotation, paraphrase, summary, and the avoidance of plagiarism.
  • To provide practice in paraphrasing and summarising sources.

Organisation and Structure

  • To explore different potential patterns for organising a literature review.
  • To examine (and practise writing) introductions, transitions and conclusions within a literature review chapter.
  • To raise awareness of ways of identifying a research gap.

Expressing Your Voice and Writing Critically

  • To explore how sources can be used to support your own position.
  • To focus on language features which can be used to guide your reader through your text while making your argument clear.
  • To discuss ways of expressing a stance towards previous studies, and explore appropriate relevant language features.
  • To examine the use of personal pronouns in a literature review.

Synthesising Sources

  • To explore the language and structure of an effective definition.
  • To practise synthesising definitions, where more than one exists in the literature.
  • To explore ways of organising a literature review thematically rather than by author/study.
  • To identify appropriate language used to make the organisation of your literature review explicit.
  • To give you practice in synthesising sources.
  • You will have the opportunity for a one-to-one on-line tutorial with your teacher, to discuss any remaining questions you may have.

Course Days and Times

  • In-person – Thursdays 14:00 - 16:00
  • Online – Thursday and Fridays 11:00 - 13:00

The in-person course will be held at both Holyrood Campus and King's Buildings.

Teaching Methods and Learning Outcomes

The course involves: discussion of aspects of reviewing literature; analysing sample extracts from University of Edinburgh doctoral theses; expanding your repertoire of useful academic English expressions; drafting short pieces of writing.

Your tutor will meet you for a class once per week, either on-line or in-person, depending which option you have chosen. You can expect to spend around 3 hours per week altogether to fully benefit from this course .

After the class, you will write a short assignment, which you should send to your tutor, who will respond with feedback on your writing, focusing on overall clarity, style, the use of sources, organisation, and linguistic appropriacy.

In the final week (week 5) of the course, you will have the opportunity for a one-to-one online tutorial with your tutor to discuss any remaining questions you may have.

By the end of the course students should have a better understanding of:

  • ways of structuring a literature review
  • appropriate language for reviewing literature
  • the skills involved in summarising and paraphrasing
  • the skills involved in synthesising sources
  • ways of expressing critical evaluation
  • ways of expressing authorial voice

Eligibility

PhD students in their second year, or who have passed their First Year Board. Final year students are also eligible, if they have not had the opportunity of taking this course earlier.
