The HOPS intervention focuses specifically on helping students develop and implement effective systems for materials organization, planning, and time-management surrounding homework completion and test preparation. This is because homework, organization, and planning skills are important mechanisms through which students learn and engage in school (Ramdass and Zimmerman, J Adv Acad 22(2):194–218, 2011; Wang and Holcombe, Am Educ Res J 47(3):633–662, 2010). Further, effective use of these skills is strongly associated with academic achievement (Bikic et al., Clin Psychol Rev 52:108–123, 2017; Cooper et al., Rev Educ Res 76(1):1–62, 2006; DiPerna and Elliott, Sch Psychol Rev 31(3):293–297, 2002; Mega et al., J Educ Psychol 106(1):121–131, 2014; Zimmerman, Achieving academic excellence: a self-regulatory perspective. In: The pursuit of excellence through education, p. 85–110, 2002). In the research and popular literature, organization and planning skills go by many different names, which unfortunately lead to confusion about the best way for schools and practitioners to promote these abilities. Accordingly, this section begins with an attempt to define the core constructs targeted by the HOPS intervention, and how they relate to other commonly used terms. We then move on to a description of how the HOPS intervention targets these skills and provide a brief review of the evidence base for the intervention. This section concludes with future directions, focusing on the potential for the HOPS intervention to be implemented and evaluated using a tiered, response-to-intervention approach.

Deficits in executive functioning (EF) skills, a typical characteristic of students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), negatively impacts adolescents' academic functioning and performance (Barkley, 2012). A repeated measures design, with randomly assigned intervention and control groups and multiple sources of information on each participant, was used to examine whether changing the method of delivery of a school's homework program in order to better meet the students’ needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence would lead to more positive student attitudes to homework, and whether there would also be a positive change in overall motivation. The participants were 104 male students aged 10 to 12 years who attended a single sex high school. There was no overall intervention effect on motivation; however, the intervention appeared to have a protective effect on the quality of motivation.

Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) often experience difficulties learning and applying effective organization, time management, and planning (OTMP) skills. Challenges with OTMP skills tend to develop following the transition to middle school when academic and extracurricular demands increase, and students are expected to operate with more autonomy. Problems with OTMP skills are associated with significant academic impairment, such as incomplete and missing homework assignments and low and failing test grades. OTMP skills deficits are particularly common and impairing in certain subgroups of students, such as students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Homework, Organization, and Planning Skills (HOPS) intervention is a relatively brief intervention that targets OTMP difficulties. This chapter reviews the evidence for OTMP deficits in students with ADHD, discusses the development of the HOPS intervention, and provides suggestions for how the HOPS intervention can be implemented as a Tier 1, 2, or 3 intervention for students with and without ADHD. Empirical studies evaluating the efficacy of the HOPS intervention are also reviewed. Overall, these studies suggest that the HOPS intervention significantly improves parent- and teacher-reported organization and homework management skills and that gains are maintained across time. Additionally, results suggest that response trajectories are favorable for the majority of participants (68–81% depending on outcome).
