AI Tools for SDV 101
Creating a prompt, example prompts, when in doubt.
NOVA does not have any institutionally approved AI tools. Below you will find some which may be useful to you.
When forming a question to ask AI, be sure to include these five elements:
- Expectations
"Act as an expert academic editor. Provide feedback on the submitted writing, highlighting areas for improvement and suggesting ways to enhance the piece's overall quality: [Provide your writing sample]"
Rather than using AI to create your work from the ground up (your voice is important!), use AI to get feedback on your writing.
To ensure your writing conveys your intended points effectively:
"Summarize the three main points of my paper: [Provide your writing sample]"
If you need support getting started on writing your paper and aren't sure how to structure your writing:
"Act as a tutor for first-year undergraduate writing students. I am writing a 500 word persuasive essay based on [chosen topic] , and I am focusing on [subtopic] and [subtopic] . Please give me an outline for my paper to help get me started."
If you need ideas for finding keywords to search in library databases, and finding where to search:
"Act as an expert librarian. I am trying to locate articles about [chosen topic] . Please give me keywords and 2-3 search strings to try, and tell me which databases I should search."
If you want broad feedback on your assignment and pointers for revision:
To locate any accidental uses of active voice in your research project:
"Check my writing and highlight areas where I use active voice: [Provide your writing sample]"
Be transparent with your teachers and peers about what tools you have used. Don't forget you can always make an appointment with a librarian or stop by the library any time if you have questions. We are happy to help you online or in-person.

On Writing the College Application Essay
Description.
One of the most stressful aspects of the college application process is the essay. Most students worry about what an admissions officer looks for in a writing sample. But that's the wrong way to approach this vital component, says former Ivy League college admissions officer Harry Bauld. At Brown and Columbia, he saw what prospective students often did wrong—and now tells you how to do it right.
In this fully revised and updated edition of the classic guide to writing the best essay of your life, Bauld has written an insider's guide to writing an essay that will stand out from the pack. He advises you on how to find your authentic voice, gives you tools and ideas that will spark your imagination, and shows you how to approach themes with originality and panache to make even the most tired topics fresh. He'll tell you straight out what admissions officers aren't looking for: another platitudinous variation on one of the following themes (if you see your initial idea reflected in this list, think again):
- The trip ("I had to adjust to a whole new way of life.")
- My favorite things (puppy dogs, freedom, and chocolate chip cookies)
- The pageant contestant ("I think World Peace is the most important issue facing us today.")
- The jock ("Through wrestling I have learned to set goals and to work with people.")
- The autobiography ("Hello, my name is . . . ")
- Tales of my success ("But, finally, when I crossed the finish line . . . ")
- Pet death ("As I watched Buttons's life ebb away, I came to value . . . ")
Getting into the college of your dreams is tough. The competition is fierce. For more than twenty-five years, On Writing the College Application Essay has helped thousands of students improve their chances. Now, let it work for you.
