In terms of word processors, Microsoft Word will likely be your go-to, but it’s not the only option. If you don’t have a license for Word, you can certainly consider using Google Docs, which is completely free. Zotero offers a direct integration with Google Docs, making it easy to manage your citations and references. If you want to go to the other extreme, you can consider LaTeX, a professional typesetting software often used in academic documents.

You’ll need cloud storage.

The number of times we’ve seen students lose hours, days or even weeks’ worth of hard work (and even miss the submission deadline) due to corrupted flash drives or hard drives, coffee-soaked laptops, or stolen computers is truly saddening. If you’re not using cloud storage to save your work, you’re running a major risk. Go sign up for any of the following cloud services (most offer a free version) and save your work there:

Thank you for all the amazing help and tutorials. I am in the dissertation research proposal stage having already defended the qualifying paper. I am going to implement some of your advice as I revise chapters 1 & 2 and expand chapter 3 for my research proposal. My question is about the writing– or specifically which software would you recommend. I know MS Word can get glitchy with larger documents. Do the “reference” apps you recommend work with other options such as LaTeX? I understand that for some programs the citations won’t be integrated or automated such as cite while you write etc.. I have a paid version of endnote, and free versions of mendeley and zotero. I have really only used endnote with any fidelity but I’m willing to adapt. What would you advise at this point?

Thanks for your comment and for the kind words – glad to hear that the info is useful.

Generally, Word works reasonably well for most research projects and is our first recommendation. As long as one keeps the document clean (i.e. doesn’t paste in loads of different styles, ultra high-res images, etc), it works fine. But I understand that it’s not perfect for absolutely huge projects.

Regarding referencing with Latex, this article covers how to use Mendeley with Latex – https://blog.mendeley.com/2011/10/25/howto-use-mendeley-to-create-citations-using-latex-and-bibtex/ . Perhaps it will be useful. I hesitate to tell you to adopt software X or Y, or to move from Endnote, as each software has its strengths and weaknesses, and performs better in certain contexts. I’m not familiar with your context, so it’s not possible for me to advise responsibly. Mendeley works well for the vast majority of our students, but if there’s a very specific bit of functionality that draws you to Endnote, then it may be best to stick with it. My generic advice would be to give Mendeley a try with some sample references and see if it has the functionality you need.

I’m writing this post in Microsoft Word. Chances are, it’s where you do a lot of your writing as well. It’s easy, convenient, familiar, and gets the job done for simple text documents. There are a lot of great features to MS Word if you want to (or have to) stick with it for your writing. If so, check out our previous post by Hanna on quick tricks for formatting in Word.

Some tasks call for a bit more than a basic word processor, though. If you’ve ever spent too many frustrating hours trying to format a Word document with multiple tables and figures (why does my figure keep moving halfway off the page?!), then you will likely agree that it’s not always the best to work with. As I embark on the dissertation-writing journey, I have been looking for an alternative to MS Word that is up for the job—something that can handle a large multi-chaptered document with robust formatting options.

The ideal software would be cheap (preferably free), fairly quick and painless to learn, and compatible with a reference/citation manager. One barrier to changing software is that my mentor likes using MS Word to edit my documents with the track changes feature. So a bonus would be that files could easily be converted to .docx to ease sending them to my PI for reviews. Here are a few non-Word options I have come across in my search for the best dissertation-writing software that seem to be favorites:

Windows, Mac OS X, Linux/Unix

LaTeX is an open-source document preparation system that was designed for scholarly and technical writing, and is great for handling large documents. It is a powerful and highly customizable typesetting system that, in contrast to MS Word, separates the content and document design. LaTeX is a markup language—it’s not exactly a programming language, but it does have similarities to coding. Because of this, there is definitely a learning curve when starting out. I was first exposed to LaTeX during college and used it to write my undergraduate thesis. It did take a while to learn, but has a huge amount of document support, and a great online community to answer just about any question you come across. The features I found that really made it worth the effort were its phenomenal job at handling mathematical equations, tables, and figures, and its own powerful reference manager BibTeX. Because it was designed to be used with LaTeX, they integrate perfectly and handle citations and cross-referencing effortlessly. One downside is that LaTeX does not export to .docx file format, so if you need a Word document for revisions or submission, there is no streamlined conversion from LaTeX. If you’re lucky, some schools provide LaTeX thesis templates already meeting the required specifications, so all you have to worry about is the content. Check out this great, detailed article on why you should use LaTeX for writing your dissertation.

If you are sold on the powerful and flexible typesetting available with LaTeX, but aren’t crazy about working solely with the markup language, a great compromise is LyX. It uses LaTeX in the background, but lets you write the content in a user interface similar to a word processor like MS Word. It still has all the advanced capabilities of LaTeX for mathematical equations and formatting, and integration with BibTeX. Other users have found that it doesn’t completely remove the need to understand LaTeX, but reduces the learning curve a bit. There are other programs that also provide a graphical editor for LaTeX such as Scientific Workplace or TeXmacs .

Mac OS X, Windows, Linux (beta)

Cost: $35-45 (free 30-day trial)

If you are a veteran GradHacker reader, you’ve likely seen Scrivener mentioned before, like here and here . In addition to standard word processing, Scrivener is great for project management and organization. It combines the visual appeal and ease-of-use that Macs are known for, and its users swear by it. It has a drag-and-drop interface, so a large document can be easily written in fragments, and provides a personal research database for easy storage of notes, folders, images (and just about anything else) that you collect as sources for your project. Another great feature of Scrivener is its compatibility with multiple file formats, making it easy to export in just about any document type. There are a couple of downsides for scientific writing, however. Scrivener lacks integration with reference management software—though users have found ways to handle citations, it doesn’t work seamlessly. It’s also not great for document layout containing formatted tables and figures. Check out this ProfHacker article on the values of Scrivener for academic writing.

An important note: don’t let the preparation of your dissertation get in the way of writing it . A complex document of this size could be edited and formatted forever, so don’t let that be a mode of procrastination! Try the software out, and it you don’t jive with it, stick with what works for you. Tools like these should only be sought if they will streamline the process for you, not hinder it. Adapt your writing software to meet the needs of your writing project. There isn’t always one perfect option—you may find that integrating multiple writing programs works best for the writing, compiling, and editing stages. Maybe all you really need is a distraction-free writing space to get the job done.

This page is dedicated to apps for your computer/smartphone/tablet/etc. that you might not know about that perform functions you will definitely need. Not necessarily for your class assignments, but they're useful.

It should be noted that all apps are one of many and these are  examples, will be free but may have a pro version or ads, and we receive no money or compensation for their promotion.

Some phone cameras also have a "scanner" mode built in now too! However if you'd like an app to automize and clean up your images, etc. try one of these to start (there are many, many more - free and paid).  If you don't have a scanner, if you have a smartphone, you do now. You can also check out this list of best scanner apps of 202 2.

Scanner to PDF by Smart Media is a great app for scanning using your cell phone (can also do with a tablet, but cell phones usually have better cameras). This will scan documents and automatically trim out anything in the background, like a table or desk so you have something that looks like you scanned it on a flatbed. You can combine multiple pages, edit the image, turn it into a PDF, utilize OCR (make it a readable PDF image), etc. *This link is to the GooglePlay/Android version. You can see other scanner apps suggested on the page it takes you to. 

You know Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat, Skype, etc., etc. etc. But here are a couple you might find useful as you do group work. You can also check out this list of 30 apps for group/project learning . 

GroupMe : free group messaging that will work on any device.

Zoom (online video conferencing): you must be an ESU student or staff member to use this

Otter.ai : text to speech that can be used with any microphone - it has an app or website and can be used easily with a phone. If you create an account you get 600 free minutes of transcription each month. It works great for live conversations, recording meetings or interviews. Here is a tutorial video (start at 1:40, before that is an ad for other software), that shows how to use it. 

Every PC  has software built in that takes a screenshot (search " Snipping Tool " or " Snip & Sketch "), which is brilliant and easy to use. Snip&Sketch is on newer versions of Windows, and Snipping Tool is on versions earlier than Windows 10.  

Your phone may or may not have built in screengrab software as well. For example, the Samsung Galaxy offers "Smart Select" which allows not only a screen grab but a GIF creation. If you're not sure what your phone has, you can try to Google it or try  Gyazo . 

Gyazo  will take screenshots and allow you to insert them into documents like normal, but it will also allow you to share your screenshots with a link - this makes sharing so much easier via chat, messenger, email, etc. It will also let you create up to 7 second GIFs and videos. It takes a very small learning curve and it has great instructions. It can be used on your desktop, laptop, tablet, or Android/Apple smartphone or other device.

Where do you go to make slideshows, awesome presentations, infographics or more? What if you have to collaborate? Try some of these:

  • Google Slides
  • Slidebean Pitch Deck Design

These apps are for any student, faculty, staff, etc. - they may help you with writing, citing, organizing, note taking, time management, etc.!

Listed out are apps in the Top 5 video. In her essential apps video she goes over open/free apps. I have included several additions for free or alternative apps as well, especially where he gives Apple only options:

  • Can also try Quoll , FreeWriter , or Bibisco for similar features for free
  • For software that integrates citations and formatting your papers you might want to try something like Perrla (subscription after a 30 day trial)
  • You could also try  Scapple for a more notebook like experience (but more legible) that let's you connect ideas and make your notes any way you want. This one is also paid, but is by the same company that brings you Scrivener. They both have a small discount for .edu emails
  • For example you may want to try Asana  which is free project management software that works for Apple and Android as well as being web based
  • Toggl - for those who really want to know where their time is going
  • Docear - this is free, open source software that collects PDFs and their notations in one place and helps create thought maps. It can also generate citations for these PDFs and has an area where you can create notes, draft ideas for a paper, and write a paper. This software has a lot of functionality in one place, which some of the above perform the same functions but not all in one place. There is a high learning curve but it may be worthwhile for you and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. 

For every app mentioned, there are several others that perform similar functions. It's a matter of finding what works for you!

When working on a dissertation/thesis/big projects, it might be useful to use one or several things similar to any of these - note taking, organizing your writing, organizing your ideas, organizing your research, organizing your PDFs of research and/or citations, time and/or project management software.

1. Evernote

Evernote is great for syncing your notes (think reading summaries, annotated bibliographies, meeting proceedings) across devices, but it's also an audio recorder. You can use it to record parts of a lecture or ideas for a research paper.

2. Penultimate

Miss the days of scribbling notes in a notebook instead of typing them on your computer? Penultimate is an easy-to-use handwriting app for iPad, so you’ll get the experience of writing on paper with the flexibility of using a tablet. You’ll need a stylus, but they’re very affordable

3. iStudiez Pro

This is an excellent tool for prioritizing your assignments and keeping track of your schedule. iStudiez can sync with your calendar, alert you when an assignment is almost due, and help you visualize your week—which is great if you tend to over-commit.

4. iProcrastinate

Love to-do lists? This app lets you organize all of your tasks into one place, set priority levels for each, and break down your long-term assignments into more manageable parts. Your task lists can be shared with and edited by multiple users, making it also a great tool for group projects.

The final structure of your thesis depends on a variety of components, such as:

An introduction sets up the topic, purpose, and relevance of your thesis, as well as expectations for your reader. This should:

Your literature review can often form the basis for your theoretical framework, but these are not the same thing. A theoretical framework defines and analyzes the concepts and theories that your research hinges on.

Your methodology chapter shows your reader how you conducted your research. It should be written clearly and methodically, easily allowing your reader to critically assess the credibility of your argument. Furthermore, your methods section should convince your reader that your method was the best way to answer your research question.

A methodology section should generally include:

  • Your overall approach ( quantitative vs. qualitative )
  • Your research methods (e.g., a longitudinal study )
  • Your data collection methods (e.g., interviews or a controlled experiment
  • Any tools or materials you used (e.g., computer software)

  • A strong, but not defensive justification of your methods

Your thesis conclusion should concisely answer your main research question. It should leave your reader with an ultra-clear understanding of your central argument, and emphasize what your research specifically has contributed to your field.

Who is australia’s raygun and why is she dancing at the paris olympics.

Australia’s breakdancer ‘Raygun’ has gone viral on Saturday morning after her incredible — or rather controversial — performance in the one and only Olympic sport of breaking .

Raygun seemingly turned back the clock to pull out some moves of yesteryear that included kangaroo hops and even ‘the sprinkler’ .

Needless to say social media lit up after her performance ... and the critics were harsh.

“In a field where the other competitors looked young and fresh, we were the daggy mum,” a News Corp journalist wrote.

“And yes, she did the sprinkler.”

Raygun, naturally, bowed out without firing a shot but in many ways she accidentally stole the show in a sport that everyone knows should not have made its way to the Olympic stage.

But who is Raygun?

Raygun is actually Rachael Gunn, born in Hornsby, New South Wales.

She is a lecturer at Macquarie University with a PhD in cultural studies.

She works in the department of media, communications, and creative arts and, yes, she is 36 years old.

After the event she said she knew she couldn’t compete athletically with the tricks and spins and strength of other dancers so she tried to be more creative.

Gunn’s first battle was against American Logistx but the Australian was no match for her international rivals, unable to win a point in any three contests including against 16-year-old French B-girl Syssy.

“What I wanted to do was come out here and do something new and different and creative — that’s my strength, my creativity,” said Gunn.

“I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get that in a lifetime to do that on an international stage.

“I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way.”

Gunn was asked whether breaking deserved to be an Olympic sport but responded that it filled the criteria.

“What is an Olympic sport?” she said.

The 36-year-old knew she was unlikely to compete with her younger rivals

“It’s so broad here ...what are the similarities between dressage and artistic swimming and the 100m sprint and the pentathlon.

“Breaking is clearly athletic and it clearly requires a whole level of dedication across a number of different aspects so I feel like it meets that criteria.

“And it’s really bringing a new level of excitement.”

Japanese b-girl Ami Yuasa won gold, topping all three rounds in a gold medal battle against Nicka (Dominika Banevic) from Lithuania.

The buzz was big around Place de la Concorde with superstar American rapper and Olympics aficionado Snoop Dogg taking to the stage to show off a few of his own moves before opening the event.

There was no doubt about the dynamic skills of the athletes, who are judged on creativity, personality, technique, variety, musicality and vocabulary, which is the variation and quantity of moves.

With two live DJs, competitors engaged in three judged battles, which involved two 60-second routines each, before the elimination round and then medals.

But with competition stretching five-and-a-half hours even Snoop, the unofficial Games mascot, had seen enough and made his departure midway through the competition.

While the athletes will compete for medals in Paris, the winners could become obscure trivia questions with Los Angeles not including it in the program in 2028 and Brisbane highly unlikely.

Australia’s 16-year-old B-boy Jeff Dunne, known as ‘J Attack’, will line up in the male competition on Saturday.

'QUEEEEEN': Raygun of Olympics breakdancing fame spotted busting moves, gains fan in Adele

Rachael Gunn , also known by her breakdancing name Raygun, went viral during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games , but the Australian is garnering even more attention after she was recently filmed busting a move or two in front of adulating fans.

Gunn is a 36-year-old university lecturer from Sydney who made waves with her performance at Place de la Concorde during the Paris Games' breakdancing competition. Many people online, and even Grammy-winning singer Adele, poked fun at Gunn's unique moves.

"I think it's the best thing that's happened in the Olympics the entire time," the British singer said about Gunn's dancing while on stage during a concert in Munich, Germany. "Did anyone see the breakdancing lady? Now I didn't even know that breakdancing was an Olympic sport these days. I think that's (expletive) fantastic."

Adele continued to say that she and her friends had been "laughing" for "nearly 24 hours" about Gunn's dancing, but she said it made her "very very happy."

Despite the jokes, Gunn continues to embrace the spotlight and some lucky fans even got a chance to see her breakdance in person. TikTok user @jeanmitchell posted a video of Gunn dancing in the street as fans surrounded her and yelled after each move. The caption was: "(Expletive) QUEEEEN"

How did Raygun do at the Paris Olympics?

Although Gunn is gaining fans, the Olympic judges were anything but as they didn't give the "B-girl" a single point throughout the competition. She was defeated by USA’s Logistx, France’s Syssy and Lithuania’s Nicka, losing 18-0 on each occasion.

Gunn, who wrote her PhD thesis on the intersection of gender and Sydney’s breaking culture, also repped Australia at the world championships in 2021 and 2022 before earning a spot at the Olympics through the Oceania championships in 2023, CNN reported.

"In 2023, many of my students didn’t believe me when I told them I was training to qualify for the Olympics and were shocked when they checked Google and saw that I qualified,”  Gunn told CNBC earlier this month .

While most of the 32 B-boys and B-girls at the Paris Games had been breakdance battling since they were young, Gunn did not participate in her first battle until 2012.

“All my moves are original,” Raygun told CNN after competing in Paris. “Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry. Sometimes, it speaks to the judges, and sometimes, it doesn’t. I do my thing and it represents art. That is what it is about.”

A Mathematical Theory of Communication with Graphs and Symbols

This work will introduce a channel conceptualization and possible coding scheme for Graph-and-Symbol (GS) Communication. While Claude Shannon’s mathematical model for communication employed graphs to describe relationships and confusability among traditional time-sequenced signals, little work as been done to describe non-linear communication with graphs where we transmit and receive physical structures of information. The principal contribution of this work is to introduce a mathematical framework for communication with graphs which have symbols assigned to vertices. This looks like a molecule, and so we may think of these messages as coded forms of molecular communication.

At this time, many problems in this area will (and may remain) computationally intractable, but as the field of graph theory continues to develop, new tools and techniques may emerge to solve standing problems in this new subfield of communication.

Graphs present two difficulties: first, they contain ambiguities among their vertices and do not have an a priori canonical ordering, and second, the relationships among graphs lack structural regularities which we see in traditional error control coding lattices. There are no Galois fields to exploit over graph-based codes as we have with cyclic codes, for example. Furthermore, the shear number of graphs of order n grows so rapidly that it is difficult to account for the neighborhoods around codewords and effectively reduce communication errors which may occur. The more asymmetric a graph is, the more orderings on symbols it can support. However, asymmetries complicate the computation of channel transition probabilities, which are the cornerstone of all communication theory.

In the prologue, the reader will be introduced to a new educational tool for designing traditional binary cyclic codes.

1 through 10 will detail the development of Graph-and-Symbol (GS) Commu- nication to date followed by two example codes which demonstrate the power of structuring information on graphs.

Chapter 13 onward will review the preliminary work in another area of research, disjoint from the main body. It is included here for posterity and special interests in applying graphs to solving other problems in signal processing. It begins with an introduction of spacetime raythic graphs. We propose a new chamfering paradigm for connecting neighboring pixels which approximates solutions to the eikonal equation. We show that some raythic graphs possess structures with multiple, differing solutions to eikonal wavefront propagation which are essential to the construction of the Umbral Transform. This umbral transform emulates ray casting effects, such as shadows and diffraction within an image space, from a network-flow algorithm.
