An Ideal Teacher Essay

Teachers are essential to the educational process. They are those who dedicate their entire life to passing on knowledge to the next generation. They are crucial for societal progress and for preserving the future of the following generation. They are not flawless, therefore we shouldn't be disappointed in them if they fail to accomplish things the way we want them to. To maintain the learning and growth process for all sides, students and teachers must work together. Every educator strives to develop their individual abilities and talents. Developing your teaching method or style is just the first step on the journey to becoming the ideal teacher. It is also related to improving relationships with students.

Being the best teacher sometimes requires adjusting some aspects of one's personality to suit the students and motivate them to learn. It might also involve changing how you perceive your work. Knowledge would be the most crucial quality in an ideal teacher. They can assist students with any questions because they are typically knowledgeable in their field. They would regularly keep themselves updated on developments in their field of study and read more research-based material on it. They would be enthusiastic about their subject, and the students would be inspired to perform well in class as a result. A teacher who is empathetic will be able to connect with their students and help them learn and grow.

An ideal teacher has an impartial approach toward every student, regardless of their level of learning, which inspires confidence in them. This gives both slow and quick learners the same learning possibilities. Another key component of what makes someone a good teacher is their ability to engage students through humour, unique lessons, and a strong presence in the classroom. An ideal teacher will model for their students in order to motivate them; this goes beyond simply giving lectures and requires active participation from the students.

Some people might say that the ideal teacher is someone who is knowledgeable in their subject matter and can teach it effectively. Others might say that the ideal teacher is someone who is patient and caring, and who takes the time to get to know their students.I believe that the ideal teacher is someone who is both knowledgeable and patient. They need to be able to teach effectively, but they also need to be willing to take the time to help students who are struggling. They should be able to foster a love of learning in their students, and help them to grow both academically and emotionally. It is also important that the ideal teacher be someone who is able to connect with their students. They should be able to build relationships with their students, and create a supportive environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

Here is an example of a short essay for classes 1, 2 and 3.

An ideal teacher is the most important person in the society. They are the nation builders, as they are responsible for teaching and nurturing the future of the world. They give correct guidance to the young kids.

When it comes to the subjects, an ideal teacher is one who is highly knowledgeable about the topic and can answer any questions that a student might have. While being an expert in a subject, a good teacher understands that the little kids are still new to it, and boils it down for them for effective understanding and learning.

An ideal teacher understands that every child is talented, and motivates them to open their wings and fly. They encourage the children to perform their best in every subject but are always ready to help the ones who may not be able to do very well or score in the test.

An ideal teacher is respected by all their students. Whether a child is a class topper or is weak in studies, the teacher always remains fair and unbiased and treats all their students equally. They do not undermine the confidence of any child and have a lasting impact on the lives of their students for a long time to come.

Most importantly, an ideal teacher knows that learning is never-ending. They never cease to acquire knowledge about their subjects to remain updated about the latest developments, discoveries, findings and theories. They match pace with the time and keep up with the generations to ensure that children find them relatable.

Long Essay On An Ideal Teacher For Children

Let’s write a long essay for class 3 on the qualities of an ideal teacher:

Teachers play perhaps the most crucial role in the process of one’s education. They dedicate their lives to passing on knowledge to younger generations. They are the key to progress in society and secure the future of upcoming generations.

What Is An Ideal Teacher?

An ideal teacher is one that leaves a lasting impression a child as they progress through their learning journey. They inspire the kids with their expertise in the subject, and guide them through all the difficulties along the way. They look out for the students and motivate them to recognise their own talents and abilities. They constantly raise their confidence with a positive spirit and empower them with knowledge.

Qualities An Ideal Teacher Must Have

A primary characteristic of an ideal teacher would be their own expertise. They would usually be very knowledgeable about their subject and would be able to answer any doubts. They would constantly be keeping themselves updated with that specific field and reading more scholarly works about that subject. They would be passionate about this subject, and that passion would encourage students to work hard in that ideal teacher’s class. If they are well-aware of their subject, it makes them self-confident.

This confidence shows on the teacher’s face and in their behaviour towards students, which would also help in creating an excellent first impression. Being an ideal teacher would not be limited merely to teaching – it would also extend to being a mentor and guardian to students, helping them with whatever problems they have. The teacher would be able to build a strong, trustworthy relationship with the students.

There are a lot of qualities that make a teacher Ideal and excellent, however it all boils down to some core factors. It is important to note that consistency in these qualities will contribute to the overall image of the school.

1. Attentive

The most important quality of an ideal teacher is their ability to be attentive to all their students. They need to be able to respond quickly and efficiently so as not to lose students’ attention, as well as interpret the needs of individual students and adapt their teaching according.

2. Good Communicator

A teacher should ideally be a good orator and an excellent motivator. This is one area that is often overlooked in education, but is extremely important. They should be able to communicate their knowledge clearly and command the attention of all students. In addition they need to be able to inspire students with a vision of the future as well as keep them motivated.

A teacher should always remain fair in their treatment of all students. Expressing favouritism and treating children with partiality may make a teacher liked by a few students, but one who ensures all children are treated equally and given the same chances is respected by all.

4. Confident

A teacher ideally should have sound knowledge about the subject matter being taught. It is important for them to have confidence in their abilities so as to give their students the right impression.

5. Organised

A teacher needs to be organised in order to keep track of their own work and the activities of their students. They should allocate specific periods for each activity and try and stick towards that time table.

6. Good with Technology

Technology is an extremely important part in today’s world, so a teacher should be able to keep up with the advancements to make sure they are not left far behind. They need to understand the advantages of using technology in their teaching methods and then apply it accordingly.

7. Inspiring

A teacher is a role model for his or her students, so he or she needs to set an example by being an inspiration. They need to set goals and standards for themselves so as to inspire their students.

8. Creative

A teacher should be creative and teach new creative ideas to their student. They should introduce concepts that the students never knew of, which means they will have to get creative and come up with methods on how best to impart knowledge in a way that is easy to understand and grasp.

A teacher needs to be kind and friendly so as to form a good rapport with their students. They should be able to empathize with their student’s problems and try to help them in the best way possible.

10. Patient

Above all, a teacher needs patience in order to deal with all kinds of students. Their students may not be the most hardworking or attentive, so they need to have patience and teach them every day with the same enthusiasm as day one. Along with this quality, a teacher should also keep an open mind and try to understand their students instead of constantly labeling them with negative attributes.

Duties Of An Ideal Teacher

An ideal teacher takes their duty of educating the young generation very seriously. They are responsible for nurturing the future of our generation by educating them and opening up their minds to several possibilities and opportunities.

A good teacher has a duty to make the child understand the importance of education and dedicate themselves to their studies.

Another duty that a teacher has is to remain fair in all their judgements of their students. They must ensure that every child feels that they are heard. Some children may be quick to grasp concepts, others may require a bit more attention. An ideal teacher makes sure all the children have understood the lessons well.

It is the duty of a teacher to make sure that every child enjoys their right to education and that none is left behind due to unavailability of resources. Some teachers go above and beyond their day jobs to ensure that children who lack resources, finances and opportunities also receive education by running night schools, special classes or education drives and camps in remote areas.

What Will Your Child Learn From An Ideal Teacher Essay?

This essay will be a great practice for your child to perfect their writing skills. This topic encourages kids to write from their opinions as well as encourages them to think of ideals, morals and principles. Writing about their ideal teacher will make your child understand what a good teacher is. They will gain more respect for their teachers and learn to be grateful for the opportunities that they receive in life.

Essay on “An Ideal Teacher” for Students [500+ Words Essay]

December 10, 2020 by Sandeep

Essay on Ideal Teacher: Teachers play the most crucial role in building a country’s foundation by enriching the country’s future generation with their knowledge. They are essential to success & progress. An ideal teacher is always passionate & updated about his allotted subject, which helps in motivating children. They are pillars of the future of any country.

Essay on Ideal Teacher 500 Words in English

Below we have provided my ideal teacher essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Teachers play perhaps the most crucial role in the process of one’s education. They are humans who actively dedicate their lives to passing on knowledge to younger generations. They are the key to progress in society and secure the future of upcoming generations. However, just like us, teachers are human – they are imperfect, which means we can never expect them to conform to everything we want. Students must also cooperate with teachers to ensure that both sides continue to grow and learn.

Because of these imperfections, we can never really ask for the most amazing teacher in the world. However, every teacher has their own skills and abilities that they can continue to work on. They also have some areas in which they may be lacking, so students can provide their input and help the teacher improve their technique or their attitude towards students. Becoming an ideal teacher isn’t limited to just improving technique or teaching style. It also has to do with improving relations with students.

This can sometimes mean changing some aspects of one’s personality to suit the students and encourage them to learn. It also has to do with changing the teacher’s perspective towards their own job. While it is a known fact that most teachers are heavily underpaid, those teachers who focus more on passing on knowledge and helping students grow become more successful than teachers who are more concerned about their next paycheck.

Qualities of an Ideal Teacher

This is so that the students would never feel as though the teacher is unapproachable, and they can’t reveal if they are having difficulties with the subject. In terms of personality, it helps if the teacher is humorous. Students typically look forward to attending the classes of any teacher with a positive attitude and plenty of good jokes and stories. If the teacher can make an entire room of students laugh, it brightens the mood and keeps students energetic and motivated to learn. This creates an environment that is optimistic, engaging, and open to discussions.

Techniques of an Ideal Teacher

An ideal teacher would always challenge their students to go beyond what they believe their limits are. They would be able to recognize the potential in students and be able to figure out different techniques to encourage them to try new skills or explore fields that they may have never even heard of before. By fostering curiosity in their minds, the students would be able to expand their own horizons and develop the skill set necessary in higher levels of education.

A teaching technique that ought to be adopted by any teacher who wishes to grow would be flexibility in the syllabus. If the students aren’t showing interest in the way a certain topic is being taught, an ideal teacher would take that criticism into account instead of brushing it aside. They would talk to the students and crowd-source suggestions about the different ways the topic can be studied and would create changes in the session plan according to those suggestions if they are necessary to facilitate a good learning environment.

However, the techniques that make a teacher ideal have to do with more than just teaching. Giving time to the students to be themselves and letting them enjoy with their friends is also important because it makes the students focus better when the teacher is actually teaching. An ideal teacher would be able to tell when the class is restless, and the students need a small break to freshen up, chat with their friends, make some phone calls and possibly grab a bite.

Short Essay on an Ideal Teacher in 100 Words

An ideal teacher is someone who is dedicated and loves teaching. He or she looks out for the students, helps them, motivates them, understands their needs and problems and guides them accordingly. For me, my class teacher, Mr Amit Mishra, is an ideal teacher. He teaches us mathematics. Although I find the subject difficult, he makes learning fun for us.

He encourages us to ask questions and explains everything in an easily understandable manner. He focuses on the students who are weak in the subject and doesn’t get angry at them even if they can’t solve the problems. He motivates us to work hard, be creative, has a rich imagination and be confident. I always look forward to attending his classes.

Short Essay on An Ideal Teacher in 200 Words

Teachers are the people who are responsible for equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for their future so that they can go on to become successful doctors, engineers, lawyers, businessmen, and most importantly, good citizens.

We can say that if children are the future of the world, teachers are the ones who shape this future. Only with the guidance and support of dedicated teachers can children blossom into beautiful human beings. An ideal teacher is someone who is dedicated and loves teaching. They have good knowledge of the subject they teach and are willing to do everything possible to help the students learn the same.

For me, our English teacher, Miss Rita Singh, is an ideal teacher. She has a master’s degree in the subject and is a knowledgeable person. She hardly takes leaves and is always punctual to the class. Her way of teaching is great and everyone pays attention in her class.

Whenever someone doesn’t understand a certain topic, she explains it again and never gets angry. We are also free to approach her after the class if we have any doubts or questions to ask. She is also an amazing person and always tells us to be kind and compassionate to others. We respect her a lot.

Short Essay on an Ideal Teacher in 400 Words

A teacher plays a pivotal role in shaping a student’s life. Teachers are the people who are responsible for equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for their future so that they can go on to become successful doctors, engineers, lawyers, businessmen, and most importantly, good citizens.

It is with the guidance and support from dedicated teachers that children blossom into beautiful human beings. An ideal teacher is someone who is dedicated and loves teaching. They have good knowledge of the subject they teach and are willing to do everything possible to help their students learn the same.

Ideal teachers look out for the students, help them, motivate them and inspire them. They try their best to understand the needs, difficulties and problems of their students and guide them accordingly. They make learning fun for students and encourage them to ask more questions, be creative, have a rich imagination and be confident.

Ideal teachers make their students learn the value of time, money, life and discipline. They instil optimism and a strong will in their students. Learning from such teachers can help students do well in their studies as well as in their lives. Students always remember and respect such teachers.

For me, my class teacher, Mrs Diksha Gandhi, is an ideal teacher. She teaches us history and social science. She has a master’s degree in history and is a knowledgeable person. If we don’t understand a topic, Mrs Gandhi explains it creatively and makes sure we get it correctly.

She is very approachable and students often visit her during the break to clear their doubts. Even though she is strict and doesn’t like us missing her classes, she is also very kind and helps us understand the lessons we missed. If we perform poorly in exams, she doesn’t scold us. Instead, she guides us and motivates us to work harder and do well in the future.

Mrs Gandhi loves to teach and share her knowledge with others. Every Sunday, she goes to teach the children living in slums. She often tells us that the most important thing in life is to become a good human being. We all look up to her and aspire to become like her. In the future, no matter where I am in my life, I will always apply her teachings and the things I have learned from her. She will always be my favourite and ideal teacher.

So, that was all about writing short essays on an Ideal Teacher . I have written these sample essays in a very simple language for a better understanding of all kinds of students. Essay About Being a Teacher: Top 5 Examples and Prompts

If you are writing an essay about being a teacher, here are some examples to give you inspiration.

Without a doubt, teaching is one of the most important professions one can have. Teachers give children the lessons they must learn to face the future and contribute positively to society. They can be considered the gateway to success stories such as Oprah Winfrey , Adele , and John Legend , all of whom have cited their teachers as major inspirations to their careers.

Many educators would say that “teaching is its own reward.” However, it may be difficult to see how this is the case, especially considering the fact that being an educator entails massive amounts of stress and pressure. Teaching has actually been reported to be one of the most underpaid jobs , yet many teachers still love what they do. Why is this?

If you want to write an essay about being a teacher, whether you are one or not, you can get started by reading the 5 examples featured here.

1. Reflections on being a teacher … by Darren Koh

2. teaching in the pandemic: ‘this is not sustainable’ by natasha singer, 3. why i got rid of my teacher’s desk by matthew r. morris, 4. stress is pushing many teachers out of the profession by daphne gomez, 5. doubt and dreams by katheryn england, top writing prompts on essay about being a teacher, 1. what makes teaching so fulfilling, 2. what can you learn from being a teacher, 3. why do people become teachers, 4. should you become a teacher, 5. how have teachers helped you become who you are today.

“Although strictly speaking, based on the appointments I hold, I really do not have time to do much of it. I say teach, not lecturing. The lecturer steps up to the lectern and declaims her knowledge. She points out the difficulties in the area, she talks about solutions to problems, and she makes suggestions for reform. The focus is on the subject – the students follow. The teacher, however, needs to meet the students where they are in order to bring them to where they have to be. The focus is on the student’s ability.”

Koh writes about how he teaches, the difficulties of teaching, and what it means to be a teacher. He helps his students hone their skills and use them critically. He also discusses the difficulty of connecting with each student and focusing their attention on application rather than mere knowledge. Koh wants students to achieve their full potential; teaching to him is engaging, inspirational, and transparent. He wants readers to know that being a teacher is rewarding yet difficult, and is something he holds close to his heart.

“‘I work until midnight each night trying to lock and load all my links, lessons, etc. I never get ahead,” one anonymous educator wrote. ‘Emails, endless email. Parents blaming me because their kids chose to stay in bed, on phones, on video games instead of doing work.’”

Singer writes about the difficult life of teachers trying to balance in-person and distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of the standard class routine, being a teacher during the pandemic has entailed the burden of handling students who opt for remote learning. They are faced with additional struggles, including connection issues, complaining parents, and being overworked in general- it’s as if they teach twice the number of classes as normal. This is exhausting and may prove detrimental to the American education system, according to the sources Singer cites.

“What it means to me is that I am checking (or acknowledging) my privilege as a teacher in the space of the classroom and in order to facilitate a more equitable classroom community for my students, erasing one of the pillars of that inequity is a step in the right direction. I am comfortable in my role as the head member in my classroom, and I don’t need a teacher’s desk anymore to signify that.”

Morris, an educator, writes about what teaching means to him, highlighted by his decision to remove his teacher’s desk from his classroom. Being a teacher for him is about leading the discussion or being the “lead learner,” as he puts it, rather than being an instructor. His removal of the teacher’s desk was decided upon based on his desire to help his students feel more equal and at home in class. He believes that being a teacher means being able to foster authentic connections both for and with his students.

“Teachers want to help all students achieve, and the feeling of leaving any student behind is devastating. The pressure that they put on themselves to ensure that they serve all students can also contribute to the stress.”

Gomez writes about the stress that comes with being a teacher, largely due to time constraints, lack of resources, and the number of students they must instruct. As much as they want to help their students, their environment does not allow them to touch the lives of all students equally. They are extremely pressured to uphold certain standards of work, and while they try as hard as they can, they do not always succeed. As a result, many teachers have left the profession altogether. Gomez ends her piece with an invitation for teachers to read about other job opportunities.

“Then I re-evaluate what I want for myself, and what it is that keeps me working towards my dreams. Through the goals I’ve set for myself, I can maintain focus, move past my self-doubt and succeed. By focusing on my goals, I can make a difference in the world directly around me.”

Taken from a collection of short essays, England’s essay is about why she so desperately wishes to become a teacher. She was previously able to work as a teaching assistant to her former elementary school teacher, and enjoyed imparting new knowledge unto children. Even in moments of self-doubt, she reminds herself to be confident in her dreams and hopes to be able to make a difference in the world with her future profession.

Essay about being a teacher: What makes teaching so fulfilling?

When it comes to teachers, we often hear about either “the joy of teaching” or the immense stress that comes with it. You can explore the gratitude and satisfaction that teachers feel toward their jobs, even with all the struggles they face. Read or watch the news and interviews with teachers themselves.

Research on the skills and qualifications people need to be teachers, as well as any qualities they may need to do their job well. What skills can you get from teaching? What traits can you develop? What lessons can you learn?

Despite the seemingly endless barrage of stories about the difficulties that teachers face, many people still want to teach. You can explore the reasoning behind their decisions, and perhaps get some personal insight on being a teacher as well.

Based on what you know, would you recommend teaching as a job? If you aren’t too knowledgeable on this topic, you can use the essay examples provided as guides- they present both the positive and negative aspects of being a teacher. Be sure to support your argument with ample evidence- interviews, anecdotes, statistics, and the like.

Teachers, whether in a school setting or not, have almost certainly helped make you into the person you are now. You can discuss the impact that your teachers have had on your life, for better or for worse, and the importance of their roles as teachers in forming students for the future.

What Makes an Effective Teacher? Analytical Essay

An effective teacher, pedagogy and practice, the way these factors interact, professional characteristics, access and fairness, classroom climate and management, impact of educational reforms, the nature of learners and learning.

From the image of an effective teacher, the analysis will be based on the teacher’s qualification as well as career history, her skills of instruction, her professional characteristics as well as the classroom setting or management (Jones, Jenkin, & Lord, 2006).

In general, there are three major factors espoused from the image and include the setting of classroom, skills of teaching and professional characteristics.

As depicted from the image, each of these factors provides not just complementary ways, but also unique ways that the teacher can comprehend their contribution. It must be understood that they all work or interact to avail value-based teaching.

From the image, effective teaching entails making hard and principled decisions, making cautious decisions, as well as respecting the intricate nature of the mission of educational (Farr, 2010).

On top of the technical skills and knowledge the teacher uses in his everyday practice, he or she must be conscious of his profession’s ethical direction.

Based on this, the primary mission of the effective teacher depicted in the image is to encourage the advancement of dispositions, skills as well as understanding, whilst recognizing considerately and sensibly an array of learners’ conditions and requirements.

According to Stronge (2007) teachers who are effective should have a collection of instructional strategies and methods, and also remain reflective and critical in relation to their practice. In general, his or her professional characteristics or responsibilities should be focused on providing education to students.

In nature, these attributes of an effective teacher different. From the image, it can easily be made out that skills of instruction and professional aspects are key factors relating to what is brought to the job by a teacher.

In the image, the professional features are basally the continuing trends of behavior that are blended to drive the activities of the teacher (Farr, 2010). The micro-behaviors are some of the examples of these things and are covered by the skills of instruction.

Generally, in as much as skills of instruction can be acquired through learning, managing to carry them forward for the time the teacher is still actively involved in his work depends on the nature of professional aspects.

Different from the two factors discussed above is the classroom setting. Generally, it connotes or denotes a measure of results delivered by professional characteristics and skills of instruction.

The classroom setting allows the instructor to fully comprehend or know the level of contentment of her students in class. The contentment is in the context of different dimensions of classroom setting created by the teacher and which functions to instigate or initiate student motivation to learn.

From the image, the professional skills or characteristics help the teacher to hold his student to account. This generally involves setting up clear objectives as well as parameters in order to hold students responsible for their performance in class.

This behavior pattern makes it easier for the instructor to fully display skills of instruction such as offering opportunities for students or learners to be in charge of their conduct or to be accountable in their studies.

When this happens, skills of instruction are put into use and students are likely to feel that there is some feeling or sense of orderliness in class or even some form of support that allows them to attempt novel things (Farr, 2010).

This should not be generalized as it is only an example relating to the image used in discussion. Other methods of instruction might turn out to be highly effective in other settings with different students.

It must be emphasized that in education, there are many ways that determine the way instructors choose the approaches to employ in classroom in order to fully influence the way his or her students feel about the instruction in general.

According to Farr (2010) professional aspects of an effective teacher are behavior patterns, which are regularly displayed. From the image, professional characteristics are how the teacher manages to execute his job.

They mainly involve things such as values and self-image or simply, the inspiration that drives performance, as well as the manner in which the teacher routinely approaches or responds to circumstances.

Teachers who are effective always depict unique combinations of features that foster or generate success for their students (Jones, Jenkin, & Lord, 2006).

As seen in the image, the professional aspects are grouped into a number of classes including thinking, professionalism, leading, prospect, and relating with other people and, setting and planning.

For one to be called an effective teacher, he or she must have strength in each of the mentioned aspects. When the mentioned aspects are strongly held and enacted they form a powerful foundation for professionalism in the teaching job.

Respect for other people, as factor, emphasizes all things that are done by a teacher who is effective, and is normally concerned with ensuring that everyone treats not just pupils but also other school members with respect (Jones, Jenkin, & Lord, 2006).

Teachers who are highly effective unequivocally regard others with high value, as well as respect the diversity within their school. A teacher who is effective usually manages to create a great feeling of community not just in the class, but also in the entire school.

Teachers who are effective also provide support and challenge. That is, they do not only cater for the needs of students, but also continually express the expectations as well as build the self-esteem of students in a way that can succeed in life and as learners.

In most circumstances, teachers who are effective usually display confidence, expressing hopefulness regarding their own abilities to deliver in class. The confidence grows as time goers by to a point that the teacher feels like he or she can now deliver in most situations.

Teacher who are effective draw on their own experience to help the not just students but also the entire school to achieve their objectives (Jones, Jenkin, & Lord, 2006). This can be done through shaping policies and procedures used in schools.

Because teachers who are effective are always committed, they are usually consistent and fair, and spend most of their class time building trust with their students.

Teacher who are effective are have been known be genuine and usually create the conducive environment that allows students to venture out, express themselves fully and are usually not troubled about making mistakes. In the teaching profession, this is a very important point for initiating learning.

The progress of these teachers in their profession is partly based on the fact that they stick to the objectives or believes of their profession.

These teachers are usually supportive of their students, and their professional feeling is at the core or center of effective teaching. When taken together, these characteristics of a teacher who is effective result in increased concern for students as well as their success.

According to Stronge (2007) classroom climate or setting is the general perception by students of the way it feels like being in a classroom of under a particular teacher. In this case, such perceptions or feelings impact the motivation of every student not just to learn, but also perform according to their abilities.

Jones, Jenkin and Lord (2006) indicate that teachers who are effective use their behaviors, skills as well as knowledge to create, in their classrooms, a learning setting that effective. These teachers create settings that optimize learning opportunities, in which students are not just well managed, but also encouraged to learn.

Order in classrooms is always important; therefore, from the viewpoint of students, they are always anticipating an instructor who can create orderliness and a sense of security as such aspects gives them an opportunity to take actively part in the class.

Jones, Jenkin and Lord (2006) indicate that the setting in classroom also depicts considerable relationships with professional aspects and teacher skills.

That is, the level or extent that a teacher is willing to develop their characteristics as well as skills that impact classroom environment, can engage or motivate his or her students effectively.

As Stronge (2007) established, the progress of students is considerably impacted by an instructor who exhibits both high levels of teaching skills and professionalism. These factors can result in the establishment of favorable environment in classroom.

Farr (2010) based on lucid proof of the progress of students in classroom; the teaching profession is a platform for professional development. In particular, it stresses the significance and influence of teachers in enhancing school and classroom standards.

Generally, teaching that is effective develops on a daily basis, supported by research that impacts the practices and beliefs of educators. It mainly avails higher standards for instructors mainly certification, as well as provision of in-house training for professional teaching staff (Farr, 2010).

Furthermore, support and training particularly time for teachers not to plan, but also to learn together and from each other.

With educational reform, instructors are repetitively challenged to adapt instruction mainly to diverse needs of students whilst maintaining high teaching standards (Jones, Jenkin, & Lord, 2006). With inclusion, all students get to learn best, especially when respect diverse ways of carrying out things.

With time and with effective instructional guidance and support, learners who are successful can easily create consequential, consistent representations of knowledge. In addition, the strategic learning aspect requires students to be led towards the set goals.

In other words, students are supposed to not just generate, but also pursue goals that pertinent (Stronge, 2007). Effective teachers in this regard must create student learning goals that are meaningful and in line with their educational and personal aspirations and interests (Stronge, 2007).

In addition, they are supposed to assist learners to integrate and acquire knowledge and also learners to develop, apply, and assess their strategic skills of learning using approaches such as thematic organization.

The top 8 essay writing tips for Teachers

Pritam Nagrale

Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids to work together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important – Bill Gates

an ideal teacher essay writing

Teachers are the most important tool when it comes to education and educating young minds. Every genius has had humble beginnings wherein he was taught by a teacher.

Teaching is not an easy job. It often requires dealing with unruly children who just won’t listen. Since the pandemic, most schools started their lectures online, and teachers and students alike were forced to interact with each other with the use of technology.

Teachers have had to adapt and change their ways of teaching as the world shut down. They’ve had to learn new techniques and modify them to leverage your teaching. Just like when a person prepares to become a teacher with all the similar efforts, any  teacher has to adopt these new changes and techniques  as well.

Teaching things online can be more difficult than teaching your students physically in the classroom. You have to find new ways to grab your students’ attention and oftentimes this isn’t easy, especially when it comes to the subjects which students already find boring!

Take essay writing, for example. How often have your students looked at you bored or in a disinterested manner only because you gave them a writing assignment? Writing can be fun and is a great form of expression. In this article, we’re going to talk about our top 8 essay writing skills, which you can share with your students and make essay writing a fun and easy task.

Top 8 essay writing tips

1). plan your essay.

Essays tell a story. Every piece that’s writing should have a natural flow to their piece, and this extends beyond the basics of introduction, body, and conclusion. When advising students on how to write essays, recommend listing all the points which you would like to make. Every point should have its own individual paragraph. Once you’ve listed the points, sort them out in a logical manner, a manner that makes the most sense. As the essay progresses, a story narrative gets developed, which is interesting to the readers. Also, logically, every paragraph should be a buildup towards the final paragraph.

2). Using clear topic sentences

There’s a clear goal to essay writing when it comes to schools which is to gain marks. Teach your students an effective way of getting maximum results when writing an essay. The first sentence to a paragraph sets a tone. The crux of your article should be explained when the marker reads the first sentence of a paragraph. Ideally, explain your paragraph first and then explain it by building on it by adding examples and explanations which back up your key points and show your knowledge.

3). Be source heavy

This will depend on the kind of essay which you are asking your students to write. If it’s on a topic which your  students need to do research  on, then focus on the importance of good research. It’s important to base your essay around facts so that your article is reliable. Reading up on your information is also important when it comes to learning or gaining more knowledge. The more you read up on facts, the more you’ll learn.

4). Write the body first, the introduction second, and the conclusion last

Writing an introduction is hard. You’ll have to compile the basic crux of your essay in the introduction part of your essay even before you have the entire essay, which is why we recommend that you focus on the body of the essay first and write an introduction when you have the basic flow of your essay written down. As long as the entire essay makes sense at the end, it doesn’t really matter the way you write it and how you begin. Writing the essay body first is just our suggestion as we believe it to be the most helpful way when it comes to writing essays.

5). Remember the tone and the voice of your essay

Are you expecting your students to write the essay in an active voice or a passive voice? Focusing on the language that you are using is equally important. An essay should be informative and should also connect with your audiences. No matter how great your article is technically, if it doesn’t resonate with your audiences and connects with them, then the marks your students will receive won’t probably be very high.

6). Make use of technology

When teachers are teaching online, it’s best to make  use of online tools  which make your life easier. When it comes to writing essays, websites such as essay punch can help guide your students when you can’t. They say that practice makes perfect, and on Essay punch, students can spend time practicing their skills and overcome their writers’ block, if any. Teachers are human too, and they can’t reach each and every student no matter how much they want to, and even if they do, this process can be tedious and taxing, which is why teachers must make the use of technology whenever they can to make their lives easier.

7). Create drafts

No writer writes an essay on the first go and doesn’t edit them. Editing is the process of making an essay better. Once a final copy is submitted, no matter how much they may want it back, it’s not possible, so insist on writing rough drafts for your essay first, making edits on that draft, and only when they’re fully confident should the essay be submitted. Oftentimes it may so happen that after writing an essay, the writer may want to delete the whole thing because it doesn’t make sense anymore. Tell your students that it’s okay. The more you write, the better your content will be and even great writers have once scrapped everything they’ve worked on and started fresh to gain better results.

8). Eliminate unnecessary words

Sometimes, writers make the mistake of over-explaining their point. Understanding where short explanations are enough is the key to not boring an examiner. Sometimes smaller words have bigger impacts and moreover, when it comes to essay writing in schools, remember that teachers have to go through several essays at a time of the same subject, making it a boring task and having to read lengthy paragraphs for a basic concept can be frustrating which is why it’s important to tell your students to make their essay as short, informative and creative as possible.

These are just some essay writing tips that we think teachers should know about.

In Conclusion

Ultimately any form of writing is an expression, and even though the topic you give your students might be the same, it can be surprising the way every student writes an essay differently and with a different point of view for you to read. Some of these rules may or may not work when it comes to writing a fictional story, as in fictional stories, the writer relies on his mind’s imagination and then pens down these thoughts in the form of an essay for you to read.

An Ideal Teacher

Essay No. 01

A teacher is the one who imparts knowledge to students in the best possible way he/she can, a person who can become their role model and the one who helps in shaping the students into good citizens.

The teaching profession is a very noble profession and so fit for only those who really wish to be among the children or youth to guide them correctly and not for those who wish to mint money.

In the eyes of the students some teachers are good, bad, very good and ideal. An ideal teacher is the one who not only helps in learning or acquiring the knowledge alone but also comes to the level of students to help with their problems or difficulties. He or she is determined to bring the best out of their students by putting in lot effort and encouraging words. An ideal teacher is excellent in his/ her subject, preparation for the class and in their teaching methods. They take pains to individually call students, correct or explain their mistakes. They have lots of patience to go through the answers and correct the test paper with care. An ideal teacher always is very approachable and clears doubts till the weakest student in the class gets the facts right. They take pains to make notes or answers, prepare children for competitions and are always with the students as a great support. An ideal teacher always praises a student when required and also sometimes scolds or points out his/ her mistakes.

Today, a teacher’s role is all the more demanding since he or she, themselves must keep up with the latest changes. They have to work with the pace of the students who have other ways of getting information. Also they have the responsibility of making their students capable of getting good opportunities or work and become good human beings. A good teacher becomes an ideal teacher by selflessly working to keep the flames of curiosity and learning alive.

Essay No. 02

There are many teachers in our school but Miss Veena Gupta, my History teacher is an ideal teacher in my eyes. She is 38 years of age and is a highly intelligent woman. All students like her very much.

Most students find History boring, but when she teaches the class she makes the subject interesting by giving examples from the daily life and by easy explanations.

She makes such effort while teaching the students as if we all are her own children. She has deep knowledge of not only her own subject but other subjects as well. She is always ready to repeat an explanation, if few of us could not understand and unlike other teachers she does not scold if we ask again and again.

Because of her knowledge and understanding of student’s problems, she is not only my ideal teacher alone but many other students too look up to her for inspiration.

She does not look down upon the poor but considers all students equal in her eyes. I can proudly say that she is not only my teacher but my friend, guide and philosopher.

Essay on an Ideal Teacher- 1000 Words

There is no one perfect teacher, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s a good thing. As educators, we should be striving to create teaching models that are adaptable and personal to each student. That said, there are still some guiding principles that all good teachers should follow. In this essay, we will explore five of those principles and how they can help you create the ideal learning experience for your students.

The Ideal Teacher

An ideal teacher is patient, understanding, and reliable. They can keep students engaged and excited about learning. They also have a good sense of humor and know how to relate to their students on a personal level. Finally, they can provide feedback that is both accurate and helpful.

Finally, an ideal teacher is someone who takes an interest in their students’ personal lives, and encourages them to develop their own talents.

The Duties of an Ideal Teacher

An ideal teacher is also knowledgeable about the subject area and able to pass on that knowledge to their pupils. They should be organised and have a good grasp of time management skills. Finally, they must be able to foster a love of learning in their students. A good teacher is patient with their pupils. They need to be able to give them time and space to work on their own problems, without feeling rushed or pressured. They should also be tolerant of different behaviour from students and not get angry easily. A good teacher knows the subject they are teaching inside out. This means that they can answer any questions their students may have and explain concepts in a way that is easy for them to understand. They should also be able to share personal experiences or anecdotes related to the material they are covering, which will help make the lessons more interesting for the pupils. Good teachers are also very organised. This means that they know how to manage their time effectively so that they can cover as much material as possible during each class session. They should also be prepared ahead of time so that they don’t have to waste any valuable classroom moments trying to come up with new lesson ideas on the fly. Finally, it’s important for a good teacher to foster a love of learning in their students. This means encouraging them no matter what results in better academic performance down the line. It can also mean providing opportunities for extra-

Rewards of an Ideal Teacher

An Ideal Teacher also keeps his classes interesting and engaging, providing students with opportunities to learn and grow. One of the biggest rewards of having an ideal teacher is the feedback they provide. They are able to identify problems early on and offer solutions that will help students improve. This feedback is invaluable as it helps students understand their strengths and weaknesses and how to improve upon them. Finally, an ideal teacher is compassionate and caring. They have a deep love for learning and want their students to achieve their goals too. This love allows them to provide encouragement even when things are tough, which can be crucial in helping students overcome obstacles.

The Challenges of an Ideal Teacher

What is an ideal teacher? Is it someone who is always available and willing to help students when they need it? Someone who never gives up on them? Someone who always has a kind word for them? The answer is all of the above, and more. An ideal teacher is someone who genuinely cares about their students and wants to help them reach their full potential. They are patient and understanding when things don’t go as planned, and they refuse to give up on a student. They are knowledgeable about the subject they are teaching, and have the ability to make complex ideas easy to understand. They maintain discipline in the classroom while also being able to show kindness and compassion. Above all else, an ideal teacher sets an example for their students, showing them what it means to be successful both academically and personally. It can be hard to find someone who meets all of these qualifications, but if you do find someone who fits the bill, don’t hesitate to put them in charge of your child’s education. Their knowledge and experience will be invaluable as your child moves forward into adulthood.

What an Ideal Teacher Should be Like

An ideal teacher should be patient, understanding, and have a lot of knowledge. They should also be able to keep a classroom under control and make sure everyone is following the rules. The ideal teacher should also be able to connect with their students on a personal level, and help them all succeed.

Attributes of an Ideal Teacher

1. They are patient and understanding. 2. They have a deep knowledge for the subject they are teaching. 3. They have a wide variety of experience teaching different subjects. 4. They are able to convey their knowledge to their students in a clear and concise manner.

What Students Should Expect from an Ideal Teacher

They should be knowledgeable about their subject and able to convey that information in a way that is easy for students to understand. Finally, teachers should be charismatic and have a positive attitude.

How to Develop an Ideal Teaching Style

An ideal teacher should develop a personal relationship with their students, encouraging them to ask questions and participate in class discussions. They create an environment that is conducive to learning, setting high standards but also providing encouragement and feedback. Above all, an ideal teacher is someone who genuinely cares about their students. It’s important for them to feel like they are part of a larger community, one that shares common goals and values. They should be willing to go above and beyond to help their students succeed.

There are so many things that go into making an ideal teacher, and it’s impossible to cover everything in a short article like this. However, the qualities that would make an excellent teacher include empathy, passion, intelligence, creativity and above all else kindness. It can be thrilling to watch students grow and change under the guidance of an amazing teacher, and I believe that every student should have the opportunity to experience this magic. P LANNING, PARAGRAPHING AND POLISHING: FINE-TUNING THE PERFECT ESSAY

Essay writing is an essential skill for every student. Whether writing a particular academic essay (such as persuasive, narrative, descriptive, or expository) or a timed exam essay, the key to getting good at writing is to write. Creating opportunities for our students to engage in extended writing activities will go a long way to helping them improve their skills as scribes.

But, putting the hours in alone will not be enough to attain the highest levels in essay writing. Practice must be meaningful. Once students have a broad overview of how to structure the various types of essays, they are ready to narrow in on the minor details that will enable them to fine-tune their work as a lean vehicle of their thoughts and ideas.

Visual Writing

In this article, we will drill down to some aspects that will assist students in taking their essay writing skills up a notch. Many ideas and activities can be integrated into broader lesson plans based on essay writing. Often, though, they will work effectively in isolation – just as athletes isolate physical movements to drill that are relevant to their sport. When these movements become second nature, they can be repeated naturally in the context of the game or in our case, the writing of the essay.

Planning an essay

essay writing | how to prepare for an essay | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

The Boys Scouts’ motto is famously ‘Be Prepared’. It’s a solid motto that can be applied to most aspects of life; essay writing is no different. Given the purpose of an essay is generally to present a logical and reasoned argument, investing time in organising arguments, ideas, and structure would seem to be time well spent.

Given that essays can take a wide range of forms and that we all have our own individual approaches to writing, it stands to reason that there will be no single best approach to the planning stage of essay writing. That said, there are several helpful hints and techniques we can share with our students to help them wrestle their ideas into a writable form. Let’s take a look at a few of the best of these:

BREAK THE QUESTION DOWN: UNDERSTAND YOUR ESSAY TOPIC.

Whether students are tackling an assignment that you have set for them in class or responding to an essay prompt in an exam situation, they should get into the habit of analyzing the nature of the task. To do this, they should unravel the question’s meaning or prompt. Students can practice this in class by responding to various essay titles, questions, and prompts, thereby gaining valuable experience breaking these down.

Have students work in groups to underline and dissect the keywords and phrases and discuss what exactly is being asked of them in the task. Are they being asked to discuss, describe, persuade, or explain? Understanding the exact nature of the task is crucial before going any further in the planning process, never mind the writing process .

BRAINSTORM AND MIND MAP WHAT YOU KNOW:

Once students have understood what the essay task asks them, they should consider what they know about the topic and, often, how they feel about it. When teaching essay writing, we so often emphasize that it is about expressing our opinions on things, but for our younger students what they think about something isn’t always obvious, even to themselves.

Brainstorming and mind-mapping what they know about a topic offers them an opportunity to uncover not just what they already know about a topic, but also gives them a chance to reveal to themselves what they think about the topic. This will help guide them in structuring their research and, later, the essay they will write . When writing an essay in an exam context, this may be the only ‘research’ the student can undertake before the writing, so practicing this will be even more important.

RESEARCH YOUR ESSAY

The previous step above should reveal to students the general direction their research will take. With the ubiquitousness of the internet, gone are the days of students relying on a single well-thumbed encyclopaedia from the school library as their sole authoritative source in their essay. If anything, the real problem for our students today is narrowing down their sources to a manageable number. Students should use the information from the previous step to help here. At this stage, it is important that they:

●      Ensure the research material is directly relevant to the essay task

●      Record in detail the sources of the information that they will use in their essay

●      Engage with the material personally by asking questions and challenging their own biases

●      Identify the key points that will be made in their essay

●      Group ideas, counterarguments, and opinions together

●      Identify the overarching argument they will make in their own essay.

Once these stages have been completed the student is ready to organise their points into a logical order.

WRITING YOUR ESSAY

There are a number of ways for students to organize their points in preparation for writing. They can use graphic organizers , post-it notes, or any number of available writing apps. The important thing for them to consider here is that their points should follow a logical progression. This progression of their argument will be expressed in the form of body paragraphs that will inform the structure of their finished essay.

The number of paragraphs contained in an essay will depend on a number of factors such as word limits, time limits, the complexity of the question etc. Regardless of the essay’s length, students should ensure their essay follows the Rule of Three in that every essay they write contains an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Generally speaking, essay paragraphs will focus on one main idea that is usually expressed in a topic sentence that is followed by a series of supporting sentences that bolster that main idea. The first and final sentences are of the most significance here with the first sentence of a paragraph making the point to the reader and the final sentence of the paragraph making the overall relevance to the essay’s argument crystal clear.

Though students will most likely be familiar with the broad generic structure of essays, it is worth investing time to ensure they have a clear conception of how each part of the essay works, that is, of the exact nature of the task it performs. Let’s review:

Common Essay Structure

Introduction: Provides the reader with context for the essay. It states the broad argument that the essay will make and informs the reader of the writer’s general perspective and approach to the question.

Body Paragraphs: These are the ‘meat’ of the essay and lay out the argument stated in the introduction point by point with supporting evidence.

Conclusion: Usually, the conclusion will restate the central argument while summarising the essay’s main supporting reasons before linking everything back to the original question.

ESSAY WRITING PARAGRAPH WRITING TIPS

essay writing | 1 How to write paragraphs | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

●      Each paragraph should focus on a single main idea

●      Paragraphs should follow a logical sequence; students should group similar ideas together to avoid incoherence

●      Paragraphs should be denoted consistently; students should choose either to indent or skip a line

●      Transition words and phrases such as alternatively , consequently , in contrast should be used to give flow and provide a bridge between paragraphs.

HOW TO EDIT AN ESSAY

essay writing | essay editing tips | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

Students shouldn’t expect their essays to emerge from the writing process perfectly formed. Except in exam situations and the like, thorough editing is an essential aspect in the writing process.

Often, students struggle with this aspect of the process the most. After spending hours of effort on planning, research, and writing the first draft, students can be reluctant to go back over the same terrain they have so recently travelled. It is important at this point to give them some helpful guidelines to help them to know what to look out for. The following tips will provide just such help:

One Piece at a Time: There is a lot to look out for in the editing process and often students overlook aspects as they try to juggle too many balls during the process. One effective strategy to combat this is for students to perform a number of rounds of editing with each focusing on a different aspect. For example, the first round could focus on content, the second round on looking out for word repetition (use a thesaurus to help here), with the third attending to spelling and grammar.

Sum It Up: When reviewing the paragraphs they have written, a good starting point is for students to read each paragraph and attempt to sum up its main point in a single line. If this is not possible, their readers will most likely have difficulty following their train of thought too and the paragraph needs to be overhauled.

Let It Breathe: When possible, encourage students to allow some time for their essay to ‘breathe’ before returning to it for editing purposes. This may require some skilful time management on the part of the student, for example, a student rush-writing the night before the deadline does not lend itself to effective editing. Fresh eyes are one of the sharpest tools in the writer’s toolbox.

Read It Aloud: This time-tested editing method is a great way for students to identify mistakes and typos in their work. We tend to read things more slowly when reading aloud giving us the time to spot errors. Also, when we read silently our minds can often fill in the gaps or gloss over the mistakes that will become apparent when we read out loud.

Phone a Friend: Peer editing is another great way to identify errors that our brains may miss when reading our own work. Encourage students to partner up for a little ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours’.

Use Tech Tools: We need to ensure our students have the mental tools to edit their own work and for this they will need a good grasp of English grammar and punctuation. However, there are also a wealth of tech tools such as spellcheck and grammar checks that can offer a great once-over option to catch anything students may have missed in earlier editing rounds.

essay writing | Perfect essay writing for students | Essay Writing: A complete guide for students and teachers | literacyideas.com

Putting the Jewels on Display: While some struggle to edit, others struggle to let go. There comes a point when it is time for students to release their work to the reader. They must learn to relinquish control after the creation is complete. This will be much easier to achieve if the student feels that they have done everything in their control to ensure their essay is representative of the best of their abilities and if they have followed the advice here, they should be confident they have done so.

Yes, A.I. Can Be Really Dumb. But It’s Still a Good Tutor.

An illustration depicting a blue-tinted laptop with an orange apple on the keyboard.

By Peter Coy

Opinion Writer

I understand why parents are unhappy with the proliferation of computers in school, as my Opinion colleague Jessica Grose documented in a recent series of newsletters. “One way or another,” she wrote in one of the pieces , “we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes.”

I’m optimistic, though, that artificial intelligence will turn (some) haters into fans. A.I. can custom-make lessons based on each student’s ability, learning style and even outside interests. For example, imagine teaching ratios by showing a Yankees fan how to update Aaron Judge’s batting average. A.I. can also give teachers and parents the detailed information they need to help their young charges more effectively.

As I wrote last month , there’s a risk that A.I. will substitute for human labor and eventually render us all superfluous. How much better it would be for us to have A.I. teach us, developing our strengths so that A.I. becomes a complement rather than a substitute for human labor.

There are no guarantees that this nice vision will pan out, of course. At worst A.I. could turn into just a more sophisticated drill machine or an electronic babysitter. My bottom line for it is the same as Grose’s, which is that the use of devices and apps in school “should be driven by educators, not tech companies.”

I’ve never taught, so I checked out this newsletter with two of my nieces, both of whom are science teachers. One teaches at a middle school in Connecticut, the other at a high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. More from them in a minute.

I admit that A.I. is probably more of a headache than a boon to educators right now. Generative A.I. — which can write a perfectly grammatical essay on any topic in seconds — is ideal for cheating. That shouldn’t be much of a problem in the long run, though, because A.I. is really good at detecting material generated by A.I. (It takes a thief to catch a thief.)

Another problem with A.I. in education is that it sometimes gets the answers wrong. When a reporter for The Wall Street Journal tested Khan Academy’s A.I.-powered tutor, Khanmigo, earlier this year, the software miscalculated subtraction problems such as 343 minus 17.

Or take this incomprehensible response by ChatGPT when asked how a man and a goat who have a boat can cross a river:

The man takes the goat across the river first, leaving the boat on the original side. Then, the man returns alone with the boat. He leaves the goat on the other side and takes the boat back to the original side. Finally, he takes the cabbage across the river.

That farcical paragraph lays bare how large language models are really nothing but autocomplete functions on steroids. This one had clearly ingested a lot of puzzles involving boats, goats and, um, cabbages.

That’s OK, though. A.I. can be useful without duplicating human intelligence, just as a wrench or hammer or screwdriver can be useful without duplicating human features.

“It’s not that A.I. is going to answer questions,” Jonathan Grayer, who founded the education tech company Imagine Learning in 2011, told me. “What it’s going to do is change the process by which teachers teach, kids learn and parents help.”

Emma Braaten, the director of digital learning at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at North Carolina State University, told me that the lesson of the past two decades in ed tech is to focus on augmentation, not substitution, of teachers — “to do things that were previously inconceivable.”

This gets back to Grose’s idea that ed tech needs to be built around teachers’ needs. That often hasn’t been the case. “A lot of times ed tech is put into classrooms through whim, word of mouth, ‘Hey, let’s try this,’” Steven Ross, the director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education, told me.

When I wrote about Khan Academy’s Khanmigo a year ago, I didn’t realize it was going to have arithmetic difficulties. This week I spoke with Kristen DiCerbo, the company’s chief learning officer, about that and other challenges. She said the company has come up with four measures to get the math right. One is that when the software detects math is being done, it sends the problem out to a calculator to get the answer. (How human of it.)

She also said Khan Academy tries to remind students that Khanmigo may be their amigo, but it’s not a human being. And not just because it might be wrong occasionally. “As a society we need to wrestle with what it means if people start forming relationships with technology,” she said. “Seems like a slippery slope.”

I’ll finish with some thoughts from my wonderful nieces. Abigail in Los Angeles isn’t all in on tech. “I would prefer to teach in a low-tech school that bans smartphones in the classroom,” she told me via email.

Still, she has found several uses for A.I. “I find that A.I. is really helpful for speeding up the annoying prep tasks that take me the longest, like generating a list of new stoichiometry practice problems for students to drill at home to be ready for an assessment,” she wrote. She also finds it useful “to reword scientific articles to help students with disabilities” and to help Advanced Placement students “brainstorm topics and research questions.”

Amy in Connecticut recounted how in the course of teaching a unit on plate tectonics featuring Mount Everest, she found an article about it in The Times that was above her students’ reading level. “ChatGPT helped me make it an accessible text,” she wrote. ChatGPT also helped her concoct a scavenger hunt for her seventh graders, complete with rhyming clues. “It turned something that would’ve been tedious into a task that only took several minutes.”

My nieces have figured out how A.I. can be a help, not just a hindrance. If they can do it, others can, too.

Taking the system in isolation, holding down benefits at the top would certainly help. However, I like to look at things from a macro perspective. Federal deficits crowd out national saving and investment. I wonder if a reduction in benefits paid at the top would reduce spending in that group. If it doesn’t — and I suspect the effect would be quite small — the impact would be merely to shift saving from households to the government (in the form of a smaller deficit).

I am very surprised that you and others who address this issue do not consider that taxing only the first $168,600 of annual earnings is a gift to those who receive very high salaries. Rather than taking benefits from the wealthy, let them pay their full freight for Social Security.

Peter here: Dozens of readers made this point. Applying the payroll tax to all earnings would amount to a big tax increase for upper-income families.

“But the age of chivalry is gone. That of sophisters, economists and calculators has succeeded; and the glory of Europe is extinguished forever.”
