Peace Is More Than War’s Absence, and New Research Explains How to Build It

A new project measures ways to promote positive social relations among groups

Today, the misery of war is all too striking in places such as Syria, Yemen, Tigray, Myanmar and Ukraine. It can come as a surprise to learn that there are scores of sustainably peaceful societies around the world, ranging from indigenous people in the Xingu River Basin in Brazil to countries in the European Union. Learning from these societies, and identifying key drivers of harmony, is a vital process that can help promote world peace.

Unfortunately, our current ability to find these peaceful mechanisms is woefully inadequate. The Global Peace Index (GPI) and its complement the Positive Peace Index (PPI) rank 163 nations annually and are currently the leading measures of peacefulness. The GPI, launched in 2007 by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), was designed to measure negative peace , or the absence of violence, destructive conflict, and war. But peace is more than not fighting. The PPI, launched in 2009, was supposed to recognize this and track positive peace , or the promotion of peacefulness through positive interactions like civility, cooperation and care.

Yet the PPI still has many serious drawbacks. To begin with, it continues to emphasize negative peace, despite its name. The components of the PPI were selected and are weighted based on existing national indicators that showed the “strongest correlation with the GPI,” suggesting they are in effect mostly an extension of the GPI. For example, the PPI currently includes measures of factors such as group grievances, dissemination of false information, hostility to foreigners, and bribes.

The index also lacks an empirical understanding of positive peace. The PPI report claims that it focuses on “positive aspects that create the conditions for a society to flourish.” However, there is little indication of how these aspects were derived (other than their relationships with the GPI). For example, access to the internet is currently a heavily weighted indicator in the PPI. But peace existed long before the internet, so is the number of people who can go online really a valid measure of harmony?

The PPI has a strong probusiness bias, too. Its 2021 report posits that positive peace “is a cross-cutting facilitator of progress, making it easier for businesses to sell.” A prior analysis of the PPI found that almost half the indicators were directly related to the idea of a “Peace Industry,” with less of a focus on factors found to be central to positive peace such as gender inclusiveness, equity and harmony between identity groups.

A big problem is that the index is limited to a top-down, national-level approach. The PPI’s reliance on national-level metrics masks critical differences in community-level peacefulness within nations, and these provide a much more nuanced picture of societal peace . Aggregating peace data at the national level, such as focusing on overall levels of inequality rather than on disparities along specific group divides, can hide negative repercussions of the status quo for minority communities.

To fix these deficiencies, we and our colleagues have been developing an alternative approach under the umbrella of the Sustaining Peace Project . Our effort has various components , and these can provide a way to solve the problems in the current indices. Here are some of the elements:

Evidence-based factors that measure positive and negative peace. The peace project began with a comprehensive review of the empirical studies on peaceful societies, which resulted in identifying 72 variables associated with sustaining peace. Next, we conducted an analysis of ethnographic and case study data comparing “peace systems,” or clusters of societies that maintain peace with one another, with nonpeace systems. This allowed us to identify and measure a set of eight core drivers of peace. These include the prevalence of an overarching social identity among neighboring groups and societies; their interconnections such as through trade or intermarriage; the degree to which they are interdependent upon one another in terms of ecological, economic or security concerns; the extent to which their norms and core values support peace or war; the role that rituals, symbols and ceremonies play in either uniting or dividing societies; the degree to which superordinate institutions exist that span neighboring communities; whether intergroup mechanisms for conflict management and resolution exist; and the presence of political leadership for peace versus war.

A core theory of sustaining peace . We have also worked with a broad group of peace, conflict and sustainability scholars to conceptualize how these many variables operate as a complex system by mapping their relationships in a causal loop diagram and then mathematically modeling their core dynamics This has allowed us to gain a comprehensive understanding of how different constellations of factors can combine to affect the probabilities of sustaining peace.

Bottom-up and top-down assessments . Currently, the Sustaining Peace Project is applying techniques such as natural language processing and machine learning to study markers of peace and conflict speech in the news media. Our preliminary research suggests that linguistic features may be able to distinguish between more and less peaceful societies. These methods offer the potential for new metrics that can be used for more granular analyses than national surveys.

We have also been working with local researchers from peaceful societies to conduct interviews and focus groups to better understand the in situ dynamics they believe contribute to sustaining peace in their communities. For example in Mauritius , a highly multiethnic society that is today one of the most peaceful nations in Africa, we learned of the particular importance of factors like formally addressing legacies of slavery and indentured servitude, taboos against proselytizing outsiders about one’s religion, and conscious efforts by journalists to avoid divisive and inflammatory language in their reporting.

Today, global indices drive funding and program decisions that impact countless lives, making it critical to accurately measure what contributes to socially just, safe and thriving societies. These indices are widely reported in news outlets around the globe, and heads of state often reference them for their own purposes. For example, in 2017 , Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, though he and his country were mired in corruption allegations, referenced his country’s positive increase on the GPI by stating, “Receiving such high praise from an institute that once named this country the most violent in the world is extremely significant.” Although a 2019 report on funding for peace-related projects shows an encouraging shift towards supporting positive peace and building resilient societies, many of these projects are really more about preventing harm, such as grants for bolstering national security and enhancing the rule of law.

The Sustaining Peace Project, in contrast, includes metrics for both positive and negative peace, is enhanced by local community expertise, and is conceptually coherent and based on empirical findings. It encourages policy makers and researchers to refocus attention and resources on initiatives that actually promote harmony, social health and positive reciprocity between groups. It moves away from indices that rank entire countries and instead focuses on identifying factors that, through their interaction, bolster or reduce the likelihood of sustaining peace. It is a holistic perspective.  

Tracking peacefulness across the globe is a highly challenging endeavor. But there is great potential in cooperation between peaceful communities, researchers and policy makers to produce better methods and metrics. Measuring peace is simply too important to get only half-right.

What Can We Learn From the World’s Most Peaceful Societies?

Given the grinding wars and toxic political divisions that dominate the news, it might come as a surprise to hear that there are also a multitude of sustainably peaceful societies thriving across the globe today. These are communities that have managed to figure out how to live together in peace—internally within their borders, externally with neighbors, or both—for 50, 100, even several hundred years. This simple fact directly refutes the widely held and often self-fulfilling belief that humans are innately territorial and hardwired for war.

The international community has struggled with a similar attention-to-peace deficit disorder . In fact, the United Nations has been attempting for decades to pivot from crisis management to its primary mandate to “sustain international peace in all its dimensions.” Yet by its own account , “the key Charter task of sustaining peace remains critically under-recognized, under-prioritized, and under-resourced globally and within the United Nations.”

Science could play a crucial role in specifying the aspects of community life that contribute to sustaining peace. Unfortunately, our understanding of more pacific societies is limited by the fact that they are rarely studied . Humans mostly study the things we fear—cancer, depression, violence, and war—and so we have mostly studied peace in the context or aftermath of war. When peaceful places are studied, researchers (much like the U.N.) tend to focus primarily on negative peace, or the circumstances that keep violence at bay, to the neglect of positive peace, or the things that promote and sustain more just, harmonious, prosocial relations. As a result, we know much more about how to get out of war than we do about how to build thriving, peaceful communities.

In response to this gap in our understanding of how to sustain peace, an eclectic group of scholars started gathering together in 2014. We are psychologists, anthropologists, philosophers, astrophysicists, environmental scientists, political scientists, data scientists, and communications experts, who are interested in gaining a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of lasting peace. We also share an appreciation of the benefits of using methods from complexity science to better visualize and model the complex dynamics of such societies, and as a platform for communicating with one another across such different disciplines to develop a shared understanding of stable, peaceful societies and of peace systems.

Peace systems are clusters of neighboring societies that do not make war with each other, and anthropological and historical cases of such non-warring social systems exist across time and around the globe. None of the five Nordic nations, for instance, have met one another on the battlefield for over 200 years. Other examples of peace systems include 10 neighboring tribes of the Brazilian Upper Xingu River basin, the Swiss cantons that unified to form Switzerland in 1848, the Iroquois Confederation, and the E.U.

The mere existence of peace systems challenges the assumption that societies everywhere are prone to wage war with their neighbors—and what we have gleaned from studying these societies is promising.

Finding the seeds of peace

Our journey to date has been circuitous but fruitful. It began with a dive into the published science on peacefulness, which helped us to identify some of the more influential scholars in this area. We then surveyed this group to identify their sense of the most central components of achieving lasting peace (74 experts from 35 disciplines responded), and then invited the respondents to a day-long workshop to make sense of the findings . Next, our core team worked with this information to develop a basic conceptual model of sustaining peace.

The focus of our model is simple. It views the central dynamic responsible for the emergence of sustainably peaceful relations in communities as the thousands or millions of daily reciprocal interactions that happen between members of different groups in those communities, and the degree to which more positive interactions outweigh more negative. That’s it. The more positive reciprocity and the less negative reciprocity between members of different groups, the more sustainable the peace.

In other words, peace is not just an absence of violence and war, but also people and groups getting along prosocially with each other: the cooperation, sharing, and kindness that we see in everyday society. Sustaining peace happens through positive reciprocity: I show you a kindness and you do me a favor in return, multiplied throughout the social world a million times over.


Next, we started gathering together all the relevant science on positive or negative intergroup reciprocity. For example, studies on Mauritius, the most peaceful nation in Africa, have found intentionality in how members of different ethnic groups speak with one another in public. Mauritians of all stripes tend to be respectful and careful in their daily encounters with others. This even translates to differences in how journalists and editors report the news, and how teachers, politicians, and clergy take up their roles in society. These findings suggest that the citizens of this highly diverse nation do not take their peacefulness for granted—they recognize that it must be cultivated and protected.

We then organized these variables by three levels (individual, group, and society) and by their dominant effects (promoting peacefulness or preventing violence). Here are the elements we found promoted peace and nonviolence in individuals (the micro level):

And, finally, at the macro level of society and internationally, we found these qualities that promote positive intergroup interactions—and those that prevent or mitigate negative relations:

At this point, our in-house astrophysicist, Larry Liebovitch, went rogue one long weekend and decided to mathematize this model (I believe with the aid of lots of caffeinated soda), developing an algorithm that captured its core dynamics. This allowed us to build a computer simulation that invites us (and you) to play with the different variables in the model to see how increasing or decreasing them might change patterns in this complex system.

Through this work, we’ve found that sustaining peace can be understood as a high ratio of positive intergroup reciprocity to negative intergroup reciprocity that is stable over time. In fact, this is exactly the type of interpersonal dynamic that researchers have found to lead to more thriving, stable marriages and families. This simple micro-dynamic of peacefulness has allowed us to begin to connect the dots between the multitude of variables investigated in thousands of studies across dozens of disciplines relevant to sustaining peace. This more basic and comprehensive approach to thinking about peace offers scholars, policymakers, and the public a sense of its complexity and simplicity, as well as (with the aid of the math model) insight into how particular policies and programs may result in intended, unintended, and even quite harmful consequences.

In parallel to building the math model, Doug Fry and Geneviève Souillac went back into the tomes of ethnographic studies that they had compiled over decades on peaceful societies and peace systems, and with their students coded for variables that they had found through previous research to be prominent in these societies. This allowed them to conduct a comparison study between 16 peace systems (such as the Nordic countries since 1815 and the Orang Asli of Malaysia) and 30 non-peace systems.

During this time, another subgroup of the team began developing new ways of measuring trends relevant to sustaining peace. The most promising of these forays to date has been working with data scientists on the development of two types of word lexicons: one for peace speech and one for conflict speech . This has been done by employing machine learning and natural language processing methods to comb through millions of newspaper articles published within highly peaceful and highly conflictual societies. The goal of this initiative is to fill the gap that currently exists for metrics that allow us to better track and therefore promote positive peace.

Finally, we have also been engaging directly with peaceful communities and those struggling to find peace. This has entailed building local partnerships and holding dialogues between our scientists and community stakeholders.

This work began in the Basque region of Spain , a society recently emerging from civil war and hungry for peace, but currently involves working with diverse sets of stakeholders living in Mauritius and Costa Rica. This has taught us about the critical importance of local understanding of some of the key variables.

For example, religious differences can be a source of great divisiveness in many communities. However, in Mauritius, a highly religious nation with large populations of Hindus, Christians, and Muslims, religiosity is tempered by tolerance and taboos around proselytizing, as well as a general belief in the value of spirituality, no matter the denomination. Such contextualization of variables highlights the limitations of the current inclination to employ top-down, one-size-fits-all indices to track and rank national peacefulness, and the need for more locally informed methods.

What peaceful societies have in common

Even a cursory glimpse at our causal-loop diagram of the science on sustaining peace gives you a sense of the highly complex nature of the system of drivers. We have found that there are many different paths to peacefulness through both our review of the science and our conversations with community members living in peace. In fact, most of the societies that currently rank as highly peaceful—the Nordic nations, New Zealand and Australia, Costa Rica, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the Czech Republic, Canada, and Qatar—came to peace through very different processes and maintain it through distinct means.

However, when our team systematically compared a sample of peace systems with a randomly selected comparison group, we discovered that peace systems tend to share certain commonalities:

• Overarching common identities , such as shared national or regional identities (like Africans, Latin Americans, or Christians) that emphasize commonalities between different ethnic groups.
• Greater positive interconnectedness and independence in the realms of economics, ecology, and security. In other words, they have public spaces, institutions, and activities that bring members of different groups together and help them realize that their fates are closely linked.
• Stronger non-warring norms, values, rituals, and symbols , like commemorations of successful peacemakers and monuments that celebrate the prevention of war. In fact, using a machine learning technique called Random Forest, we discovered that the single most important contributor to peace is non-warring norms, followed in decreasing importance by non-warring rituals, non-warring values, mutual security dependencies, superordinate institutions, and economic interdependence. This suggests that developing norms that are supportive of positive reciprocal social relationships may be more important for peace than previously assumed.
• Peace language in the press . We have been developing a technique to help us measure and track the power of peace speech—peaceable language for building and maintaining more peaceful communities. Our preliminary findings are promising, suggesting that the distinct qualities of conflict vs. peace words in our lexicons are related to the relative “tightness/ordered” versus “looseness/creative” nature of the terms. In other words, journalism in peaceful places seems to employ language of a looser, more open, playful nature, while reporting from non-peaceful societies reflects tighter, more closed, or bureaucratic language.
• A greater degree of peace leadership from politicians, corporations, clergy, and community activists who help establish a vision and set a course toward peace. Peace leadership occurred, for instance, when the Iroquois peace prophet unified five warring tribes and replaced the weapons of war with dialogue and consensus-seeking. Other bastions of peacefulness like Costa Rica and the E.U. have evidenced similar visionary leadership for peace.

Ultimately, we have found that when these different peace variables align and reinforce one another, virtuous cycles are often created that become more resistant to changing conditions. This, we suggest, is the essence of sustainability.

There is still much to learn. We recently launched a short video and a public website that provides an overview of the project and the team, which includes a map locating contemporary societies sustaining peace, an interactive version of the causal-loop diagram that allows users to explore the evidence behind it, and an interactive version of the mathematical model that encourages users to plug in values and play with the model.

In the end, it is vital to remember that peace exists today in pockets all around the globe, and that the more we study and learn from such societies, the higher our chances of building a global peace system for all. Peace is possible—and the more we understand, the more probable it becomes.

Let us not use bombs and guns to overcome the world. Let us use love and compassion. Peace begins with a smile. Smile five times a day at someone you don't really want to smile at; do it for peace. Let us radiate the peace of God and so light His light and extinguish in the world and in the hearts of all men all hatred and love for power. Today, if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other-that man, that woman, that child is my brother or my sister. If everyone could see the image of God in his neighbor, do you think we would still need tanks and generals? Peace and war begin at home. If we truly want peace in the world, let us begin by loving one another in our own families. If we want to spread joy, we need for every family to have joy. Today, nations put too much effort and money into defending their borders. They know very little about the poverty and the suffering that exist in the countries where those bordering on destitution live. If they would only defend these defenseless people with food, shelter, and clothing, I think the world would be a happier place. The poor must know that we love them, that they are wanted. They themselves have nothing to give but love. We are concerned with how to get this message of love and compassion across. We are trying to bring peace to the world through our work. But the work is the gift of God. I was blessed to have known Mother Teresa for fifteen years. I especially treasure the times I was asked to drive her around while she was in San Francisco, because it enabled me to ask her questions. In the course of knowing Mother, I always saw her receive each person the same way. She saw the face of God in everyone, always approaching each person with love, compassion, and the gift of her complete self. Time was never an issue. I once asked her, "How is it that you never seem to judge anyone who comes to you?" She said, "I never judge anyone because it doesn't allow me the time to love them."

Social conflicts generally arise when people pursue their self-interests with less regard to other people’s interests or values. As a result, one party perceives the goals or actions of the other as incompatible with its own leading to a conflict. Although conflict may affect relations between the parties involved, if well understood, it offers an opportunity for ending oppression and promoting better human relations.

In addition, conflict forces people to engage in resolving a common problem. If a conflict is effectively managed, peace is achieved as the concerned parties reconcile their differences and reach a mutual agreement (Giroux, 1993, p.137). In achieving peace, it is important that parties involved in a conflict develop a deeper understanding of their culture and the cultures of the others, which can facilitate dialogue between parties involved in a dispute.

To achieve peace and tranquility in conflict situations, there is nothing better than personal interactions and communication through dialogue. Dialogue is one way of achieving peace and solving interpersonal, national, and international disputes. Additionally, increasing cross-cultural interactions is important in peace-building initiatives as it promotes understanding, which results to peace and prosperity (Giroux, 1993, p.141).

To promote interactions between parties involved in a conflict, dialogue is essential. The major impediment to peace is failure of the conflicting parties to understand and appreciate each other’s perspectives to an issue. To achieve peace, therefore, it is important that the parties involved learn to understand and appreciate one another’s values and interests through dialogue and interactions.

Conflicts primarily arise when various parties pursue self-interests while neglecting the other people’s needs. The pursuit of individual interests creates a social dilemma, which may turn out to be detrimental to all people. However, through and communication, the social dilemmas can be resolved. Dialogue promotes group identity, which consequently promotes concern for collective welfare (Giroux, 1993, p.142).

Conflicts also arise when groups or people compete for scarce resources leading to group identity and polarization. Due to competition, one group perceives the other as the ‘outside group’ and develops negative perceptions towards the ‘outside group’ members. Meanwhile, the in-group members become more cohesive and at the same time proud. Nevertheless, through dialogue, the two groups can reconcile and find a way of resolving their differences.

Perceived injustices can also lead to a conflict especially if one party feels that he/she is unfairly treated. If resources are not distributed equitably, the party that feels exploited can turn aggressive and harass the one perceived to have over benefitted or plan for revenge.

However, through collective dialogue, the group perceived to have over benefitted unfairly can offer an apology or compensation to the other group. This would also prevent future retaliation by the exploited group. Misperceptions of each other’s goals or actions may also cause a situation to degenerate into a conflict.

Misperceptions arise when an individual interprets information or a situation in a biased or self-serving way. As a result, negative stereotypes of the out-group are developed, as each group perceives the other’s goals as incompatible with its own. Dialogue allows the conflicting parties to understand each other’s perspectives in a particular conflict and dispels negative stereotypes and misperceptions.

The strategies that mitigate the causes of conflicts provide effective ways of preventing a situation deteriorating into a conflict. To solve conflicts and attain peace, dialogue is integral to any peace building initiatives. Dialogue encompasses contact or interactions, communication, cooperation, and conciliation, which are the main strategies of achieving peace (Myers, 2010, p.483-501).

By encouraging communication between the conflicting parties, people are able to resolve their interpersonal differences. Communication can occur through bargaining, where the parties seek an agreement by engaging in direct negotiations. Mediation is also another way of achieving peace through communication.

In mediation, a third party, who should be bipartisan, facilitates communication between the two groups and suggests recommendations to both parties (Potegal, 1997, p.309). Communication can also be facilitated through arbitration, where a neutral third party imposes a settlement that each party must adhere.

In a case where communication may not be possible like during tense international relations, conciliation is the most appropriate strategy. Under conciliation, each party is required to reciprocate positive initiatives from the rival party, which helps to reduce retaliation that prevents the conflict from escalating. One effective conciliatory strategy is GRIT (Graduated and reciprocated initiatives in tension reduction); the most effective strategy in resolving international conflicts (Myers, 2010, p.503).

Peace can be achieved through cooperation, which is particularly important in reducing hostility between groups. By promoting cooperation in various activities, competition, which is one of the causes of conflicts, is avoided. Contact is another strategy of achieving peace in that, contact through frequent interactions enables both groups to understand each other’s cultures and viewpoints, which in turn promotes dialogue to attain peace.

In order to achieve peace, it requires all the involved parties to engage in a collective effort towards achieving peace. Prior to engaging in conflict resolution, information about the causes of the conflict and the context of the conflict is important. Given that conflicts generally arise due to pursuit of individual interests, dialogue through cooperation, communication, interaction, and conciliation ensures that the diverse interests of each individual are addressed for a common good.

The new book "Peace with Nature: 50 Inspiring Essays on Nature and the Environment" was launched in Singapore

The book is published this month by World Scientific Press. It was edited by Professor Tommy Koh, Professor Lin Heng Lye and Shawn Lum.

The launch of  Peace with Nature: 50 Inspiring Essays on Nature and the Environment, took place on 4 September 2023 at the POD, National Library in Singapore. The event counted with the presence of the editors (Professor Tommy Koh, Professor Lin Heng Lye and Shawn Lum), as well as Desmond Lee (Singapore's Minister for National Development).

This book is a must-read for all who love nature and the environment. It contains 50 inspiring essays written by Singaporeans and friends who share their perspectives, expertise and experience –as scientists, lawyers, economists, engineers, bankers, government officers, and civil society– all linked by a love for nature, for the environment, and for Singapore. The essays focus on the protection and preservation of Singapore's rich biodiversity (primates, colugos, otters, butterflies, dragonflies, stick-insects, birds, coral reefs, mangroves and sea grasses); efforts to save special areas (the Lower Peirce Reservoir, Chek Jawa, Sungei Buloh, the Rail Corridor and the first marine nature reserve); the contributions of NGOs (Nature Society, Herpetological Society, Waterways Watch Society); and the efforts of scholars, the government and the private sector to ensure a clean and green City in Nature, amidst the challenges of limited space and climate change.

It is very necessary for the growth of society as well as a nation. Peace is similar to nonviolence. This article describes how it is important for the nation as well as society.

Introduction Peace is a human need. Maintaining peace of mind helps us to achieve goals in our life. Peace is the way for bringing growth and prosperity in life. If there is peace in every human's mind then this world will go on peacefully. Without peace, any kind of development is impossible. Peace is vital for the survival of human beings. According to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's words " peace is a precious commodity, necessary for any progress". Right from the beginning, we Indians are fond of peace. Whenever war happened in any country, we tried to solve problems through peace. Nowadays, It is not an easy task to maintain peace as new generation people believe in violence. As you know in our country multilingual and multi-religion people reside still we live together happily. But in another country, the condition is not favourable. In a European country, there is much bias between black men and white men. They are never treated equally. But in India, we provide equality to every people irrespective of caste, creed and religion. In our country, Mahatma Gandhi was against violence and believed in peace only. He wanted to get independence with peace. He used to preach to the people if someone slaps you on one cheek then you should forward the other cheek to take another slap which means he was a very peace-loving human being. Besides, The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, and Saint Francis de Sales are known as peace idols. They tried to make this world understand that peace is the strength of mind. We can conquer this world through peace only. War always brings destruction in life. Nobody can be happy by violence. Oftentimes you would be felt that we could not do work due to a lack of peace. Peace is necessary not only for progress in life but for good health also. A peaceful mind can do good work. If you create a peaceful environment then only work will happen properly. Peace helps us in preventing violence. Why peace is Important for society? Peace is important because it brings unity, optimism, and collaboration among society. Peace increases our concentration of mind. when our mind is in peace position then we are not affected by other people what they think about us. A peaceful mind helps us in learning and understanding things faster. Peace keeps us mentally and physically fit. Peace provides strength to society. Peace brings brotherhood, happiness, and integrity to society. Peace develops job opportunities in society. No society can exist without peace. Conclusion Peace is the accurate way to maintain love in society. Peace is essential for protecting our society from being damaged. Peace can make our nation healthy, wealthy, and strong. Without peace, It is impossible to imagine a prosperous and developed nation. Peace can be achieved only by mutual understanding. The main reason for our country not developing fully is due to the lack of peace in the country. Our country is having some neighbouring countries who always try to create unrest and disturb the situation in the country. Because of these acts we have to be alert always which is taking away peace from us. If we have friendly neighbours we need not spend such a huge amount on defence and that money might have been used on the development of the country. Even in such adverse conditions also, we tried to maintain peace and tried to make agreements with the neighbouring countries. In such attempts, we have lost great leaders like Lal Bahadur Shastri. When there is peace around we will be happy and the whole environment around us will be pleasant. But many politicians try to disturb peace in the society by creating a difference between the people so that they will get importance.

Peace is an elusive entity. Since time immortal from the dawn of civilization our leaders, scholars, and saints had always preached about peace and tried to achieve it in this world but it always seemed to be difficult to achieve peace in totality among the various tribes and societies existing in the world. There could be many reasons for not having peace in this world but some of the main reasons are attributable to the difference in cultures, difference in religions, difference in ideology, and difference in the way the different societies live and aspire to expand their own kingdoms or country boundaries. Ambitions and aspirations for winning on other countries and ruling over them is the root cause of creating disturbance and unrest in this world. Though number of such invaders might be less in the world in comparison to the peaceful people but small number of bad people is enough to spoil the atmosphere throughout the globe. So this is a very difficult situation where most of the people in the world are peace loving but at the same time there are few pockets where some terrorists or ill minded people live and are creating all source of problems for the people all around the world. These ill minded people are stubborn in their thinking and approach to the other societies and are beyond repair in the sense that even after teaching and explaining them the modern way and modern life of living they do not agree to that proposition and remain in their mindset of fighting and attacking others.

In this run-of-the-mill world, every country has become so engrossed in proving itself as the top that it does not even realize that humanity and peaceful life are being lost in the meaningless disputes between countries over borders and land, etc. . The person who wants to live in peace is also sacrificing his life in these disputes and the peace is lost. Thinking about one's own progress is a natural common behavior, but it is wrong to prove oneself high by destroying the interests of others or their religions and the same is happening in some parts of the world. India is really a great example, where people of different religions and cultures live together in brotherhood, give respect to each other. When a person thinks about the interests of others along with himself and is also happy with the happiness of others, then his life automatically becomes peaceful and people who live such a peaceful life become a symbol of peace in the society as well.

Yes, very nicely define the theme of peace by the Author. All our sages have preached the message of peace. Because they realized how important the need for peace is for a nation. We have at least learned something from them, so at least as Indians we are proud of it. In this context, the words of the seven sages are not to be forgotten. The modern famous personnel in India also teaches us the words of peace. The names of Gandhiji, Mother Teresa, Vivekananda, etc. are significant. Some of their quotes are very much relevant at the present situation like- “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" by Gandhiji, “Peace and war begin at home. If we truly want peace in the world, let us begin by loving one another in our own families. If we want to spread joy, we need for every family to have joy" by Mother Tressa, and “It is a privilege to serve mankind, for this is the worship of God. God is here, in all these human souls" by Swami Vivekanand. So peace makes everyone happy both physically and spiritually. In the modern world, the word peace is so important in recent times, it is my personal opinion that there has been a communal intolerance all over the world, the consequences of which could be horrific. Moreover, with the recent withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban have taken over Kabul and we are witnessing various acts of violence, which are never desirable. So above all this is the place of peace, so it is possible to solve all this only through the proper application of the message of peace. When can we all forget the violence and go to peace?

Nice try from the author and the subject matter is very strong. The essence of everyone's life is to live in peace and no one wants to get disturbed or distracted from the peace of life. Whoever has attained wisdom in life have always advocated for peace and those who are saints and scholars always referred to the holy books citing peace as the main plank of living in harmony. Lord Krishna has played a major role in trying to avert the possible Kurukshetra war and just asked for five villages in the name of Pandavas but that could not be digested by Duryodhana and thus the great war was announced. Even our country is for wholesome peace in the region and does not tolerate the overtures of China and Pakistan. As long as human beings stay, peace is going to stay as what they want the most.

Peace within can create peace outside the world. The other way around is not possible. However, the irony is that despite knowing that we have to create it to experience it, we keep looking for it outside. It is just that we have forgotten how to be peaceful. When we realize that we are peaceful, we will experience stillness within us. We will come at peace with ourselves and at ease with ourselves. When we discover it, we will not be able to again get distracted no matter how many efforts others make to bring disturbance into our lives. As we have forgotten that we can create it and experience it, we feel that it is others who will bring it for us. We have made it dependent on others. When someone speaks loudly and creates chaos, we blame him for disturbing our peace. We don't want to do the inner work because it is difficult. Also, it requires us to take personal responsibility. When we are disturbed, it denotes that we failed to remain at peace. We don't want to admit it, and therefore, we lay the responsibility on another person.
